Take Advantage of Your NAIFA Membership This Month!

Wow — it’s October already! The days certainly are getting shorter and the colors are changing. Winter

will soon be here. Let me begin my message this month by extending my sincere congratulations to our

own Terry Headley. As many of you know, Terry was successful in his bid to serve on the NAIFA Na-

tional Executive Committee. He will soon begin his term as national secretary. In just two short years, we

will have the wonderful opportunity of joining Terry in Seattle at the national convention to celebrate as he fills the role of the

I would like to thank all of the NAIFA-Omaha members who attended this year’s convention in San Diego and helped

make Terry’s campaign a success. At the same time, I would like to encourage each of you to consider attending next year’s

“If you don’t participate, if you decide to dropout, someone else will take your place. Theywill occupy your seat; they will cast your vote;they will choose your representative for you,‘your representative’ will then speak for and rep-resent the interests and views of the otherfellow.” — U.S. Senator Thad Cochran

Even if you’ve never run for office, even ifyou don’t know much about politics or elec-tions, you can still make a big difference in theway Congress votes on legislation affecting in-surance and financial services professionals.

How? By being an effective constituent.Nothing matters more to a member of Con-gress than how his or her constituents feel aboutissues they care about. That old adage aboutthe customer always being right is even moretrue with elected officials. Their customers —the voters — are always right!

To stay in office, legislators must do a goodjob representing the interests and views of thosethey were elected to serve. They value the in-put of knowledgeable and concernedconstituents like you. That gives you a lot ofclout! Clout that can have a big impact onmatters that affect you and your clients.

You Can Make a Difference Via APIC

Active, informed constituents commu-nicating directly with their members ofCongress — that’s what APIC (AdvisorsPolitical Involvement Committee) is allabout. Your involvement can range fromresponding to NAIFA Action Alerts onlegislation affecting your business, sign-ing up as a legislative contact for NAIFA(if you personally know a member of Con-gress), or serving as a Federal Senate orHouse Coordinator and holding regularmeetings in the district with your legisla-tor. The level of involvement is up to you.

To sign up as a legislative contact, com-plete and return the APIC form on thispage or contact [email protected] at the APICOffice at NAIFA for further informationand assistance.
