3 BLUES NEWS March 2012

Congratulations to the 2011 KBS solo/duo contest winner Jimmy Davis of Madison, IN who made it to the semi-finals of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis last month. This is the second year in a row the KBS solo/duo representative has made it to the semi-finals. Last year it was Jimi V and Screamin' John. Other local/regional representatives included the KBS band contest winner Little T&A, Louisville's Cole Prior Stevens, who won the Indiana Blues Society solo/duo contest and Miss Lissa & Company and Noah Wotherspoon of Cincinnati. Wotherspoon performed at last year's Louisville Blues-n-Barbecue festival at the water tower and made it to the finals of this years IBC representing the Dayton Blues Society. I will have more information and photos from the com-petition in a future issue of Blues News.

MOM's Music and the blues society will offer a series of events during the month of March at MOM's Mellwood Avenue store. Max Maxwell is teaching a sound class on Saturday, March 3. Walter Lay will be leading a slide guitar clinic on Monday, March 12 and a harmonica clinic on Mon-

day, March 19. The first 25 people through the door on the 19th will receive a free Hohner harmonica. On Saturday, March 24 the KBS will give a history of the blues presentation at 1:00 pm followed by a blues jam at 2:00 pm featuring Marvin Maxwell, Wayne Young, Ray Barrickman and Billy Dean. You can find more information about MOM's Music on-line at http://www.momsmusic.com/.

Notable blues shows during the month of March include Shemekia Copeland and the Mojo Tones at Natasha's Bistro in Lexington on Sunday, March 4. At the 2011 Chicago Blues Festival Copeland was presented with Koko Taylor's crown by Koko's daughter Cookie and pronounced the new “Queen of the Blues.” Davina and the Vagabonds will be at Nata-sha's Bistro on Monday, March 12. Davina has been described as “sounding like the daughter of Leon Redbone and Betty Boop trained on piano by Randy Newman.” Headliners Music Hall will have the Reverend Horton Heat on Thurs-day, March 8, Seth Walker and the Wood Brothers on Sunday, March 11 and the North Mississippi Allstars on Friday, March 16. The Devil Makes Three will be at the Kentucky Theatre on Monday, March 12 for the WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour and at Uncle Slayton's on Tuesday, March 13. There will be a blues show at the Louisville Science Center on Thursday, March 15 featuring Amy Johnson and Tony Tkac at 7:00 pm and Lamont Gillispie & 100 Proof Blues at 8:00 pm. This is in conjunction with the center's special exhibit entitled Guitar: The Instrument that Rocked the World. The KBS will have a booth set up at the Louisville Science Center the weekend of March 31/April 1 and give a blues his-tory presentation.

There will be a tribute to the late John Carby at Creekers Bar and Grill on Sunday, March 4. This is not a benefit or a fundraiser. This is just an evening for friends to get together, swap stories and songs, have a drink and a laugh just like John would've liked it. Members of Dog House Kitchen, The King Bees, the Pat Thomas Band and Cowboy George & the Flatland Pickers will be on hand to play. Creekers is located at 6330 Bardstown Rd and the doors open at 5:00 pm.

4 BLUES NEWS March 2012

Photos by Pam Dean Lou Ann Barton and Jimmie Vaughan performing at the Kitchener Blues Festival on August 6. This past summer, some members of the KBS board (L-R Carolyn, Debbie, Nelson, Chris and Pam, not shown) made the cross-continental road trip to Kitchener, Ontario, CA to catch a stellar lineup at Canada’s biggest free blues festival.

Seth has been on the Delbert float-around for four years straight. He was born in North Carolina and trained to play cello classically before his uncle – who was a jazz bassist and a disc jockey – turned Seth on to the music of T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, Son House, Muddy Waters, Charlie Christian, and Louis Jordan – to mention the main names - by sending him tapes of his Blues Radio Show.

Hooked farther into guitar playing by SRV, Hendrix and Eric Clapton, this yet another “overnight success story” spent 15 years in Austin cutting his stage teeth, writing songs, and building a fan base.

He is releasing his 6th album, entitled “Time Can Change”, in May of this year and has moved to Nashville to write and record with Gary Nicholson – who writes and records with everyone connected with Delbert, it turns out.

About his new album, which includes session musicians Steve Mackey on bass and Kevin McKendree on piano – both members of Delbert’s Band Dick 50 – and Raul Malo and Ray Benson as backup singers, Seth says: “This al-bum is more intimate and quieter and has more space for voices. Maybe you could call it organic.”

He will be the opening act at Headliners in Louisville on March 11th starting at 7:00, and you can also watch him on YouTube.

New Music Reviews!

Aaron Williams and The Hoodoo 10:49 Aaron Williams and The Hoodoo

This trio of Aaron Williams on guitar, Eric Shackleford on bass and Z on drums, hail from Wisconsin. Their opening song on the CD, “Boom Boom” starts off like a Mississippi hill country blues- a pulsing, hypnotic song-until they change into high gear, crank up the bass and take off into hard rock.

Song number 2 is more heavy rock, and then, number 3 finally slows down into a slow rock tune called “My Turn”. The fourth song and title track “10:49” features a harp, resonator with slide, and vocals only and is the only song I would con-sider blues.

These days, you don’t have to buy an entire CD-you can buy one song by downloading it. My suggestion is to download “10:49” and forget the rest.

Bob Brown

Ruthie Foster Live at Antone’s (DVD) Blue Corn Music

Anyone who has seen Ruthie Foster knows that the woman is talented and loves her music. This DVD proves once again that she is an entertainer, a great guitar player (acoustic only) a good vocalist and songwriter. She is joined by Hadden Sayers on guitar on the performance. She was recorded at the famous Antone’s in Austin Texas, her hometown.

Foster’s music is a mix of folk, gospel, and blues. She has won several awards including the 2010 Blues Music Female Vocalist of the Year. She tours relentlessly and garners praise wherever she goes. Her guitarist, Hadden Sayers re-cently released his own CD and on the DVD, he plays one of his songs.

This DVD is an entertaining video, not necessarily blues, but good nonetheless. You can check her out at her website http://www.ruthiefoster.com/ and decide if you like her. The DVD would fit nicely into your music video collection.

Bob Brown

Jackie Johnson Memphis Jewel Catfood Records

Not the blues, but great 70’s style soul with a Memphis feel. Motown’s The Tears of a Clown, defi-nitely has that feel. I really like the two originals. If you love soul, check it out!

Jim Masterson

Sena Ehrhardt Band Leave The Light On Blind Pig Records

Blues vocalist Sena Ehrhardt is a force to be reckoned with in the blues world. Delivering her tunes with sass, soul, sizzle and strength, Ehrhardt goes from sultry to powerful in flawless fashion on this re-lease of 10 originals she co-wrote with her father, band guitarist Ed Ehrhardt.

It was the elder Ehrhardt, in fact, who infused in her the love of blues and inspired her to play music in clubs, juke joints and other venues and to follow her dream. Her years of experience have payed off, as this is her de-but CD and it's released on none other than the legendary Blind Pig label.

The Minneapolis-area blueswoman, who fronts a small band also consisting of the rhythm section of drummer Tim Hasler and bassist Steve Hansen, sings each tune with authority, whether it be the funky opener and its follower "My Bad," and the title track respectively; the swing-blues of "On the Clock," or the slow-burn and sultry "Last Chance," which gets a nod for at least the top two or three category of best tunes on the CD. "Same Team," a bluesy, toe-tapping call for a renewal of treating others right, is another keeper. Basic, open D, I, IV, V progression, but so well done it really cap-tures the ear. Then, near the end of the set list, is theup-tempo "Texas" boogie of "Hear Me" that'll make you wanna get up and move.

Hopefully, this is only the start of something great for this excellent band, and a wonderful singer!
