The 20th of November, Cheeta’s life changed completely: she arrived at MONA!. Our team and the team of Oasis Park Fuerteven- tura have one common goal willing to move heaven and earth in order to achieve it: we all wish for Cheeta to have the best life possi- ble. Cheeta spent nearly her whole life together with her friend King and another female called Felipa, but when those two passed away after a tragic incident, she found herself alone. An intolerable situa- tion for a primate as social as a chimpanzee.Even knowing that every change can be difficult at first, that in Catalonia we don´t enjoy the tropical climate of the Canary Islands and that she’ll have to deal with cold winters, at MONA we can offer her something very, very special, what she needs the most and what makes everything else worth it: we can offer her a life together with other chimps… a new family! At the beginning Cheeta was definitely confused and probably didn´t understand why she was moved to MONA, but after a few days of getting used to her new installations, getting to know her new caregivers and routine, it became clear that she was very eager The Newsletter of FUNDACIÓ MONA · Issue 31 CATALÀ ENGLISH CASTELLANO to get to know the other inhabitants of MONA. For most new arrivals, the first encounters with others of their kind are very inten- se and stressful moments. Cheeta however demonstrated even on her first day of integrations that she wants nothing more than to see, touch and live with other chimpanzees. At this moment she’s already met all the other Family members and has been in direct contact with all of them, except for the more dominant females, Waty and Africa, however this is normal They’ve all showed lots of curiosity and treated her very kindly and sweet right from the begin- ning. Some even refused to be separated from her, eager to spend many more hours together, getting to know her better, and many nights she doesn’t sleep alone anymore. We are very excited and pleased to see that Cheeta is quickly adap- ting to her new home and even more so, to see how eager she is to be with the other chimpanzees. She still has a long way to go, many more alliances to establish and many more installations to explore, but one thing we know for sure: she will have a life full of surprises and happy moments together with her new family. We want to thank all of you who made it possible for Cheeta to live a happy life with her new family at MONA. Fundació MONA was created to put an end to illegal trade, exploitation and abuse of primates in captivity, to report the real risk of extinction and to support their protection in the wild. Close to Girona, MONA has established one of the few rescue centres in Europe that oers both a home-for-life for chimpanzees and other rescued primates, where they are able to live in natural surroundings. Mona is a place in which people become inspired, wish to further understand them, and develop a greater respect for them. It was with great sadness that last November we announced the passing of our dear friend Janice Wilson. Janice was a tireless animal advocate and joined MONA-UK in 2007. She quickly became a respected and essential part of the team in the UK, who battled to make a difference to the lives of primates suffering in captivity. Today we also want to thank her from the bottom of our hearts because even though she is no longer with us, she has generously left a legacy to MONA , which means that her dedication will be never be forgotten and she will continue to help us to make a difference to the lives of the primates in our care and also help MONA continue to rescue more primates suffering in captivity.

We want to be with you on your best moments

Congratulations Victor for your 10 years at MONA!by Cristina ValseraVictor was lucky enough to be born in the wild, but his family got poached and he was kidnapped from his home at a very young age to be sold as a pet to someone in France. His owners soon realised how unsuitable it is to have a pet chimp and locked him in a cage in the garden. When he reached 14 years of age he was moved to a zoologi-cal park where he lived even a more lonely life. It was thanks to the organization One Voice that he could find his way to MONA. They were concerned about his wellbeing and contacted us hoping for a better life for Victor.

This 2016 Victor turns 34 and it is 10 years since MONA went to rescue him. He had a long and hard way but eventually he learned the ways of a chimpanzee and became even a very sociable and playful member of his new family group. Nowadays you will likely find him strolling through the outside enclosures looking for food (he is very focused on foraging and feeding, and is a bit overweight cause he forages way faster than his friends), playing with Africa on the tower or enjoying Tom’s company. We are so happy for him because he has found a new family here at MONA.
