Apple-Q since 1979 has been offering training in the use of Apple computers to members from all walks of life. At 36 years, it is one of the oldest Apple Computer Clubs in the world, and its training and administration are provided by its members completely voluntarily.

Apple equipment is enjoying an increase in popularity, with the release of the iMac, MacBook, iPod, iPhone and iPad in great variety over recent years. Educationists and businesses of every sort show an increasing preference for Apple products.

Details of the Club's programs are to be found at its website,http://www.apple-q.org.au/, informing readers that ...

"We offer a range of services to club members to help them get the most from their Macintosh computer, iPhone and iPad including demonstrations on a range of topics plus one-on-one assistance, training on apps as chosen by members, a monthly magazine, book/magazine lending library, software library and online forums."

Monthly meetings are held in the Art/Music Building, MacGregor State High School from 10:30am on the 3rd Sunday of the month with Training Days being held on the 4th Sunday; no meetings in December.

As I write the monthly report, Brisbane (and most of Australia) is expecting a cold blast from the south - the coldest temperatures for about 3 years! As we rug up, just remember that a fewer number of insects will be around when Spring rolls in!

Apple Bug Editor

This month, while Derek Hackett takes some leave, Bill Tinney will be producing the 'Bug. Bill has stepped in and offered to learn about how the 'Bug is put together. (As training, he produced his own private copy of the 'Bug last month!) Thank you, Bill, for stepping in and giving it a go! Please show Bill your appreciation, too.

MACWorld Magazine

Our Club has subscribed to MACWorld for some years. It is a magazine full of interesting and informative articles. We will be attempting to make this magazine more available to members by adding the copies to the Hardcopy Library for borrowing. We will follow the usual public library procedure of allowing perusal ONLY of the current copy of the magazine on Club meeting days. A number of recent issues will be available for perusal or borrowing. Please be considerate of other members and promptly return borrowed copies to the following month's meeting day. I often find that a quick photo on my iPhone of the page or two of interest and read it at my leisure on a computer screen at home. That way someone else can find an article of interest!

Happy Apple-ing!

Since the advent of the Apple App Store, Mac users have seen a massive increase in the number of applications and utilities available to them. Also the prices have decreased dramatically. Applications that once cost hundreds of dollars are now a fraction of that price.

Another contributing factor is Apple’s change to OS X which is based on UNIX and is a cousin of Linux. Most of the Open Source Freeware software comes from Linux as it is itself Open Source and free. So, many people co-operatively write free software for Linux which can be quite easily ported to OS X. There is so much in fact that I produce the Disk of the Month which has around 10 GB of new free software and that is but a small part of what is available!

Most of the major software categories such as word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, drawing, photographic editing, audio, video, desktop publishing, emulation, virtualisation, games, finance, networking, developer, multimedia, DVD authoring, web, backup, ... are available as freeware. There is a folder on the Apple-Q file server called Applications and Utilities (Freeware) that contains over 4GB of free software (see on right).

Several are of very high quality with many businesses choosing to use them. I mostly use freeware apps and have purchased very little software in years.

The Apple-Q HowTo Tutorials are produced using LibreOffice which is similar to Microsoft Office and reads and writes most of its file formats.

Also when MS Windows people send me files the were created using MS Office I just open them using LibreOffice. It has six components which can interact with each other to produce a wide variety of documents and handle detailed data manipulation.

I also use GIMP a lot, which is a very powerful photographic manipulation and drawing application similar to Adobe Photoshop.

In recent OS X versions Apple decided that it was safer to hide the user's Library folder so that people who did not know what they were doing could not easily go in and mess things up. There was still a way to access it however by holding down the Option key while opening the Finder's Go menu:

However if you have OS X 10.9 or higher you can now have the option of showing it permanently. Here is how...

1. By default the user's Library is hidden when the contents of your home folder is displayed. In the past, I managed to get around this annoying feature by placing an alias to it in my Finder Sidebar.

2. There is now an option in the Finder to have the user's home Library show all of the time, but there is a trick. To do this you will need to have a Finder window open with your Home folder selected (mine is called leighharvey).

3. Next, go to the Finder's View menu and select Show View Options.

4. You will now see an option to Show Library Folder. Enabling

this will once again display the Library in your Home folder:

I hope that you found this mini Apple-Q HowTo Tutorial useful. The full version will be available at the meeting. Come along to my Q&A - Tips session to learn about this and a so much more!

Remember that this is just one of the many tutorials available at

Apple-Q. Check out my other Apple-Q HowTo Tutorials on the Apple-Q Server during our monthly meetings and training days.

IP Video Cameras have become affordable in recent times. Add to that the Internet and either Power-Over-Ethernet or Ethernet-Over-Power and you have a ready-made home security system that you can not only use in your home but also when you are out and about.

Power-Over-Ethernet allows you to place an IP camera where you have no power point, just run an ethernet cable to the iP cameras location and it provides both network and power.Ethernet-Over-Power allows you to place an IP camera in a location

where you can not easily provide an ethernet cable. Both the network and power are provided via the power-lines in your home.

These two types of devices allow you to place your IP camera in places that you could not easily do before. So, all that you have to do is connect your IP cameras to these devices and connect them to your ethernet modem/router and you have a system that can not only monitor your home while you are out, but also allows you to check on your home via the internet.

So add to this a mobile device that has access to the internet like an iPhone and you can view your home while you are anywhere in the world that has the internet; isn’t modern technology wonderful?

Come along to the QuickBytes session at the next meeting to learn more.

In a household or business where there is more than one computer it is useful to set up a Network Printer for all of the users to access, thus cutting costs or allowing diversification of printer types. You could still have a cheap printer with each Mac and network a nice colour laser printer for all to share.

You can of course connect a printer to a Mac and share it on the network but this requires that Mac to be turned on for the others to access the printer.

The printer need not be a network type with its own ethernet or wifi interface. A USB printer can be connected to the USB port of your Router for it to be shared. Of course, if you have a wifi router, then you can turn your basic printer into a wifi network printer without all of the associated cost.

The printer that I have used to do this is a Canon IP3000 connected to an ASUS RT-N56U Router. The Canon drivers do not work with OS X Yosemite so I am using the IP3500 driver instead.

Your router will need a USB port that supports printer sharing which Apple-Q’s ASUS router does. Network printing needs to be enabled in the router settings followed by setting up the printer up in the System Preferences Printers & Scanners section for each Mac that you wish to print from. You will also need to have a compatible printer driver installed on each Mac.

There are a few tricks to setting it all up, so I have created an Apple-Q HowTo Tutorial about this. I will also be running a QuickBits presentation at the next meeting showing a step-by-step demonstration on how you can turn a standard USB printer into a WiFi Network Printer.

Apple-Q also has a laser printer that can be connected to the router during meetings or training sessions for use by members. Members participating in training sessions in which printing a final product is helpful can now do so without each person having to connect to the printer via USB one at a time. They should now be able to send their print jobs wirelessly. In this way problems can be picked up and corrected at the training session where you can get help rather than finding out after printing it when you get home.

A similar method to that shown here can be used to create a wifi networked hard drive, great for sharing files between your Macs and iOS devices. I can do a session on this if there is an interest.

What is it?Last month I provided an AppleScript I had written recently to get rid of those unwanted copies of files that always seem to end up on your hard drive.

You know the routine - first you copy files to a pen drive, maybe photos to take to Big W or somewhere for printing. Then, before you have a chance to delete them, you’re away on holidays and run out of space on your camera, so you copy those to your pen drive too. Eventually, you forget which files were where, and for what reason, so you copy the whole lot back to your hard drive “for safe keeping.” The problem is, you never seem to have the time to search through them all and delete the ones you already had safely tucked away on your hard drive to begin with, or you don’t have the confidence they are exact copies and don’t want to take the chance.

Or another family member makes multiple duplicate folders on your computer, whilst insisting they know what they’re doing, and leaves you to clean up their mess!

Backups, too, sometimes get out of hand, especially in the pre-Time Machine era.

Not that any of that has ever happened to me.

I’ll admit Uniquify is quite basic. It’s not intended to be a full-featured app with lots of

options. There are a number of improvements I could make, such as giving a choice of what to do with the duplicate files it finds. It could probably be faster, if I made the script more complicated. It doesn’t provide much of a user interface (only what AppleScript provides without using XCode to pretty things up). I could make it search your entire hard drive, zapping out the duplicates to reclaim every last byte of unnecessary storage. But that’s not really the point… at least, not in this version.

The script doesn’t use file names or creation dates or even size alone to determine matches. Rather it searches for duplicate contents. This should inspire you with some confidence that you’re not losing anything by accident, even though the script deletes the files it matches, not just ‘trashes’ them. You can watch the space on your hard drive grow as the script achieves its goal!

I usually provide scripts such as this for Apple-Q, not only for the feature it provides, but also as a tool for those interested in learning more about AppleScript. Even if that’s not your cup of tea, then it will certainly do its job and quite fast enough for the occasional use for which it’s intended.

InstallationOnce you have a copy of the script, double-click its icon. You’ll notice three things:

• Firstly, the software is copyright, as stated right at the top of the script. I let you use it under the conditions listed.

• Next are instructions for installation. Apple keeps changing its mind about AppleScript related features but fortunately the scripting language itself seems to have settled down. This script runs on OS X at least as far back as Tiger (10.4) up to the latest release (10.10.3).

Installation, though, is a different matter. Around Snow Leopard the “AppleScript Utility” disappeared, so the instructions I included need some updating - never mind, it’s actually simpler now. The option you need to update has been moved into Script Editor. That’s the app that opened to show you the contents of the script, so that’s handy.

Open Script Editor’s preferences, under the General tab, tick “Show Script Menu in menu bar”. When it’s ticked, the Script menu ( ) appears in your menu bar. As with most other menu bar icons, you can command (⌘)-drag the icons into the arrangement that suits you. I put the scripts here to make them easy to access and to simplify the way you interact with them.

As the remaining instructions say, click on the desktop (to make Finder the active application), then using the new Script Menu, select Open Scripts Folder ▶ Open Finder

Scripts Folder. Drag Uniquify into the Finder window. It’s installed. (Once the Script menu is active, installing future scripts requires only this paragraph.)

• The rest of the script is the computer’s set of instructions for Uniquify’s search and destroy mission, which I’ll discuss below.

Tidy up, by closing the windows we opened: Script Editor and the Finder folder.

Uniquify-ingAs I said, the interface is quite basic, so using the script is a snap.

• Choose at least two folders.

You can choose more if you want the script to scan through multiple potential copies. Remember in Finder, once you have selected one or more folders, you can add to and remove from the selection using command (⌘)-click. Note the folders must be in the same window for Finder to consider them part of the current selection (selected folders in a different window go grey). If the folders are in different parts of your file system, you could move a folder temporarily or instead use list view and open the disclosure triangles (▶) to get to lower folders.

• With your folders selected, choose Uniquify from the Script menu ( ).

• Uniquify gives you a list of the selected folders, using the folder paths. From this list, choose one folder to be considered the master folder. Reassuringly, it reminds you the master folder won’t be altered.

• Click the […and delete duplicates] button and watch it do its thing.

What it doesThe script does some housekeeping first. It does nothing with individual files that were selected in the Finder, so it scans through the selection and makes a list of only the folders. As long as there are at least two folders, it can proceed (otherwise it gives you a gentle reminder that you did something silly). It then gives you a list of the folders, allowing you to choose the master folder. That’s the last you need to do.

It makes a list of the files within that folder (note, not the folders within it - it doesn’t search sub-folders, only the folders you selected). With each file in the master folder in turn, the script then looks for files in any of the other selected folders that match by size, to quickly rule out most files as a possible match.

If there are files with the same number of bytes, the script goes deeper to compare the contents of the file. It doesn’t open the files, rather it uses a terminal (Unix) command called “diff” - it’s fast and efficient and doesn’t

care what type of file it is, be it a photo, movie, word processing document or a virus!

Only with an exact match does the script delete the non-master file.

Helpfully, it flashes the colour of the folders as it goes. If you have a lot of files, it’s useful to see that it’s still processing its way through them all. When it finishes, it restores the folder colours back to what they were before it began and says “Uniquified” to let you know it’s done.

DisclaimerAll the big companies cover themselves legally, so I’d be silly not to: use at your own risk. I’ve tested the script on my own files and on some other computers ranging from OS X 10.4.11 to 10.10.3. Nothing disastrous should happen, even if the script somehow fails. The script is designed to delete duplicates only - however there are ways you can trick OS X into thinking one folder is actually two. If you’re smart enough to know how to do this, you’re smart enough to know that deleting files from one folder will delete them from both. Similarly, if you’re using a cloning or folder syncing tool for backups, perhaps this script isn’t for you.

Next Training Workshop:

10.00am to 3.30pm on Sunday 27 July. Venue: Arts Department, MacGregor School, Springfield Street, MacGregor

Les Isdale, Training Co-ordinator

Last Month, the workshop took us through Mac Basics that we'd forgotten - or never knew - and made us wonder what other great tricks lurk beneath the Mac bonnet. Watch this space - I'm sure we'll be hearing more from Leigh on this topic.

The new Photos, which replaces iPhoto in the OS v. 10.10.10 had some surprises too. The full tutorial is available on the July Club DVD.

Next?

Who knows? It will be decided by members at the 19 July meeting. We'll hear from Leigh about Mac Freeware and Utilities, which might lead to demand for a closer acquaintance with the apps in a workshop environment. Secretary John will brief us on Security Cameras, and Leigh's Quick Bits will be about WiFi Printing and the Club Printer. I've also heard there is interest in music applications, and data storage and transfer. Question is - what do YOU want? There are problems you may think only you experience which (if you mention them) might prove to be of general interest. There are apps in abundance you might wish to know more about, or even particular functions among the myriad on offer. Let's hear from you at the July meeting.

Operational Details

Workshops run from 10am to 3.30pm. Lunch is BYO, and you'll need your Mac to get a hands-on experience from the tutorial.

When you email in reply, to register to attend workshops, please remind me of your phone number in case plans alter, and you need to be notified.

BYO computer, lunch and drinks - and loads of curiosity and enthusiasm.

Apple-Q training is available free, for members only, but new members will be signed up on the day, by payment of the annual subscription and joining fee.

Our workshops try to limit attendance to eight students per workshop max. To make sure that all eight places in a workshop are filled, it is necessary to arrive by 11am or risk losing your registration.

Training News with Les Isdale - Training Co-ordinator

Apple-Q's Training is now free to members.

Be sure you take-up this opportunity.
