Rutges CargoRutgesCargowasoriginallyfoundedin1886,transportingcoalsusinghorsesandwasapioneerinaircargotransportsincethe1970s.Today,ithasofficesinAmsterdam,BrusselsandLondonandprovidesscheduledroadtransportservicestoover100airportsthroughoutEurope.
Thecompanyisalsoaspecialistproviderofsecuritytransportforhighvalueshipments,suchaspharmaceuticals,inEurope,supportedbyitsmembershipoftheTransportedAssetProtectionAssociation(TAPA).
PriortoitsacquisitionbyWallenborn,RutgesCargowasownedbyTheWimBosmanGroupintheNetherlands.
Wallenborn TransportsFoundedin1920byMettyWallenborn,thecompanyexpandedfromit’sLuxembourgbasetoofferinternationaltransportin1963.
Expressandair-cargoserviceswereintroducedinthe1980s.Wallenbornisoneofthefirsttoequipitstruckswithcellulartelephonesin1992andin2001,theheadofficelocatedtoapurposebuiltlogisticscentreinMunsbach,nearLuxembourgairport.

Haugsted AirCargo ServicesHaugstedwasfoundedin1887asthefirstfreightforwarderinDenmarkfocusedmainlyoninternationalexpedition.Inthe1930’sdoor-to-doorsolutionswereintroduced,initiallybetweenCopenhagenandLondonandtrans-Atlanticseaandairserviceswerelaunched.
Haugstedhasbeenactiveinair-cargotruckingsince1994.In2010,itoperatesafullNordicdistributionnetworkrevolvingarounditscentralhubinCopenhagenandfacilitiesinBillundandOslo.ThisnetworkextendsbeyondtheNordicstoreachthemainairportsinWesternEuropeonascheduledbasisandincludeshandling,transportand3PLactivities.Haugsted’spreviousownerwasDachser.

A strong commitment to the German marketWallenborn has opened a new office at Munich Airport after having opened at Frankfurt Airport last year to spearhead its growth in Germany.

Wallenborn has become the first trucking company to publish performance data measured against Cargo 2000’s service level agreement for road feeder services.Cargo2000isagroupofover70majorairlines,freightforwarders,groundhandlers,truckingcompaniesandITproviders.Itsmembersareimplementingre-engineeredaircargotransportationprocessesfromshippertoconsigneeusingCargo's2000's'MasterOperatingPlan'.Thissitsattheheartofanindustry-wideprocesscontrolandreportingsystemthatdrivesdatamanagementandcorrectiveactionsystems.Itsubstantiallyreducestimespentmanagingirregularities,suchasservicefailures,cutsthetimerequiredformanualtrackandtraceproceduresandleadstoareductioninservicerecoverycosts.

Meeting the changing needs of
Europe’s pharmaceutical
manufacturers When it comes to the distribution of pharmaceutical and biotech products within Europe, few would disagree that the landscape has changed significantly. Direct-to-Pharmacy developments in the UK and other countries, along with new products that have differing and more challenging transportation characteristics, has promoted the need for the logistics industry to ‘step up’ and provide a more diversified range of services.
Inevitably,asthesupplychainbecomesmoreintegratedwiththeenduseritbecomesmorecomplextomanage,largelyasaresultofmorefrequentbutsmallershipments.Fromaregulatorycomplianceviewpointthiscanbearealchallenge,notleastintermsoftemperaturestability,particularlysinceoverthenext2-3yearsover50%ofallnewlyapprovedmedicineswillbebiopharmaceuticalswhichhaveparticulartemperaturesensitivitiesduringtransportation.

Industryharmonization,moreconcentratedmanufacturing(includinggenericproduction)andcentralizedRDClocationssuchasthoseintheNetherlands,hasincreasedtheneedforhighqualitylogisticsprovidersandparticularlythosewithpan-Europeannetworks.
Emerging changes
Althoughthedistributionandlogisticsrequirementsofthepharmaceuticalindustrycontinuetochangewiththedevelopmentofnewandmorevaluableproducts,theneedforend-to-endtemperatureassuranceremainsparamount.Manypharmaceuticalproductsrequirestoragewithindefinedtemperatureorhumidityranges,asdictatedbystabilitystudies,andthereisincreasingfocusbyregulatorsuponthe15-250Crangeinadditiontothe2-80Crefrigeratedband-widththatquality-focusedlogisticsproviderslikeWallenbornhavebecomecompetentinproviding.
Regulatorsalsorequirefulldocumentedevidencetoshowthatalltheappropriateconditionshavebeensatisfiedthroughoutthecustodychainandtheresponsibilityofeachpartyisclearlystatedaspartofaformalcontractoragreement.ManufacturersmustthereforechooseprofessionaltransportoperatorswithwhomtheycandevelopandmonitorStandardOperatingProcedures(SOP’s).
Thevehiclesusedarecentraltothetransportoperationsandareessentiallyanintegralcomponentoftheoveralltransportsystem.Wallenbornvehiclesaretemperaturemapped,qualified/validatedwithrecordsgeneratedandretainedtoshowthattheseactivitieswereperformedandsuccessful.Temperaturemappingisusedtoidentifyhot/coldspotswithinthevehicleandanytemperaturegradientsacrosstheload.
Emergingchangesinminimizingoveralldistributioncostsareclearlyevidenthowever,largelydrivenbycurrenteconomicpressuresandtheneedtotakeanin-depthlookatpracticalities.Thispressurecomeswiththedemandthatoperationallogisticsqualityisnotreducedandhasbeenincreasinglyalignedwithrecognizingtheenvironmentalissuesassociatedwithadedicatedbutpart-fulltruckload.Thebalancehasalwaysbeenbetweentheconcernsofmanufacturerstowardsco-loadingproductsfromdifferentmanufacturersononeoperator’svehicle,versusfindinganeffective,securesystemthatcanalsomanagemultipletemperaturerequirements.
Thiswasonceadifficultcallbutwithvisionandinvestment,theWallenbornfleetincorporatesnewvehicleswithseparatecompartmentsdedicatedtodifferenttemperaturezonesthatcandopreciselywhatmanufacturershavebeenasking
for.Theyallowshipmentsofvaryingsizeandtransportrequirementstobecarriedonthesamevehicle,representingconsiderablecostsavingsandreducingtheimpactupontheenvironmentcompared
toafullvehiclebeingusedforlessthanfulltruckloads.
JasonBreakwellsaidcustomersmustplaceequalimportanceonchoosingatransportoperatorthathasanetworkstructurebaseduponusingonlyitsownvehiclesanddrivers.Thisisvitalinordertoavoidoneofthemainareasofconcernformanufacturers–thelossofcontrolwhen3rdpartytransportcompaniesareused.
Security provision standards
Inamarketwherecounterfeitdrugsalesareestimatedtoreach$75billionby2010,itisclearthatdrugcounterfeitingisontheincrease.TheEuropeanCommissionalonereportedthatin2007theyhadseized2.7millioncounterfeititems.
Wallenborn’scommitmenttoprocedurallysecuringthesupplychainfortheincreasinglyregularmovementoftoday’smorevaluableproductsprovidesanimportantpartoftheprocesstowardsthepreventionofcounterfeiting.Manufacturersnaturallywanttoensurethatsecurityproceduresattheiroutsourcedmanufacturinganddistributionlocationshaveahighintegrity.Butwhenitcomestooutsourcedtransportationproviders,howcantheybesurethatappropriatesecuritystandardsarebeingapplied?
WallenbornisamemberofTAPA(theTransportedAssetProtectionAssociation),whichhasbeenattheforefrontofthedrivetoensurethatlogisticprovidersrecognisetheimportanceofsecuringtheirpartofthesupplychainforcommoditiessuchasvaluablepharmaceuticalandhealthcareproducts.
“Manymanufacturerswillknowthattherealcostoffreightlossesfromtheftcanbeuptoseventimesthevalueofthegoods.Thecostofproductreplacement,misseddeadlinesandpossibleemergencyproduction,tosaynothingofthedamage
tobrandidentity,canbeconsiderableandinevitablyleadtohigherinsurancepremium,”addsBreakwell.
