Dear Members,

The President’s Corner

Welcome to the first edition of Making Change for 2017. I hope that you had a joyful holiday season and I wish you a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

2016 was a memorable year at SJFCU, with lots of changes and growth. We will continue to evolve and grow in 2017 and we are gearing up for a very, very busy year! Just take a look at what we have going on in the First Quarter!

We’d like to help you start the new year off right by getting you into shape. In this issue, you will find ways stay fit, stay safe, save money and help pay down your debt. The best way to start the new year is to get on the right track with your finances. It’s not uncommon to overspend during the holidays…we all want to buy “just the right gift” for everyone on our list. The good news is that SJFCU has three ways to help you consolidate debt. First, you can transfer balances from your high-rate credit cards, to our low, fixed-rate Platinum Visa card. While other financial institutions typically charge a percentage of your outstanding balance to transfer to their credit card, SJFCU has FREE Balance Transfers. If you do not have an SJFCU Visa, apply for one today! Our second offer is a special Personal Loan. We have increased the amount you can borrow…up to $15,000 with a low, introductory rate of 4.99% apr for 12 months! SJFCU makes it easy by making the payments directly to your creditors. And last, but not least, homeowners can take advantage of our flexible Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) or our fixed-rate Home Equity loan.

Winter weather is here and your home and vehicles probably need a little TLC. Read our helpful tips on how to make sure your car and home are ready for the cold weather. If your car needs a bit more than just TLC, we’ve got very competitive rates on auto loans. Whether you want to buy a new car, used car, or refinance a car loan that you have with another financial institution, we can help.

On those days when you can’t get out of the house and “cabin fever” starts to set in, we’ve got some fun projects to keep the kids busy. And just because you can’t get out, doesn’t mean you can’t work out! We’ve got easy workouts you can do at home (which you’ll need after trying the recipe for “27 Layer Dip” on page 23). Another benefit of working out at home….it will save you money on gym membership fees!

We love to be out and about in our communities, whether it be volunteering our time to wonderful organizations such as Cathedral Kitchen, or having some fun at the Boro in Lights. Be sure to check out the “Community News” section to see all the great things SJFCU has been involved in during the last few months. Our employee sponsored charity for this Quarter is the Susan G. Komen Foundation. I am proud to report that our employees alone raised over $8,000 for charities in 2016. The monies benefitted such worthy causes as Ovarian Cancer, Cystic Fibrosis, Prader Willi Syndrome and Autism.

I know that you will enjoy reading this issue of Making Change. We at SJFCU look forward to another great year of providing our members with a wide variety of great products and services and superior customer service.

“Servicing one member at a time…. welcoming one new member at a time, all the time”.

Yours Truly,

Rahul KachruPresident and CEO

March

The Internal Revenue Service announced that the nation’s tax season will begin as scheduled on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2017. Hooray!

Now, here are some important reminders when it comes to your tax refund:

Important Info Regarding Tax Season

• The Direct Deposit request on your tax form must be listed in your name, or the joint owners’ names; if not, it will be returned to the IRS.

• The IRS Refund should be posted to our SJFCU Routing Number – 236077755.

• If the account number you list on your IRS return differs from the account number we have on file for you, it will be rejected, and returned to the IRS, causing a delay.

Filling out your tax refund forms accurately for a direct deposit, can help you get your refund earlier – in some cases, up to three weeks earlier than if you received a refund check by mail!

1. Organize Paperwork- Keep all documentation that comes in the mail towards the end of 2016 and beginning of 2017, e.g. W2s, 1099s, mortgage interest statements – any tax-related

documents. Start to collect receipts and any other documents you have specifically kept for tax time. Be sure to file all the proper paperwork to ensure tax season goes

smoothly.

2. Tax Forms- If you’re looking for a particular form, you can view and download a large catalog of forms and publications on the IRS Web site. You can also choose to have them sent to you by mail.

3. To Itemize or Not- It is common for people to accept the standard tax deduction as oppose to

itemizing deductions. See “IRS Publication 529: Miscellaneous Deductions” to learn more about

what can be considered an itemized deduction.

4. File Electronically- The IRS processes electronic returns faster than paper ones, so the refund can become available three to six weeks earlier. If you expect a refund, file electronically.

Winterize Your Car!

Winter months can present many challenges for your vehicle. While modern vehicles are designed to handle inclement weather conditions, there are some basic steps every driver should take as the days get shorter and the temperature drops.

Inspect or Replace Your TiresLow air pressure and worn tires are especially dangerous on wet or slick roads, as both can reduce traction. Check your owner’s manual for the recommended PSI. If you’ve never checked tire pressure yourself, stop by an auto parts store and pick up a tire gauge.

Snow Tires - Mounting the right tires on your car or truck can give you a huge advantage when trekking through snow. Many car makers and tire manufacturers recommend changing all four tires to snow tires in the winter. If you don’t swap all four, the difference between snow and summer tires can cause other problems for your vehicle. If you live off the beaten path, you can even buy snow tires with studs to help you get where you’re going all winter long. When spring comes, though, you’ll be glad to get out of the heavy winter tires because your fuel efficiency and handling will improve with a less aggressive tire.Another option is all-season tires that you drive year-round―winter and summer. The advantage of all-season tires is that you don’t change the tires before winter or need to keep two sets of rims. Of course, the disadvantage is that you don’t get all the great features of a specialized seasonal tire.

Replace or Refill All FluidsWhether you take your car in for regular maintenance or you’re a do-it-yourself home

mechanic, the best way to winterize your car is to start by checking your fluid levels.Coolant—It is especially important to have the correct antifreeze/water mixture to prevent fluid from freezing in your radiator. Consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for information

on this mixture. Pick up a tester at an auto parts store and make sure the fluid is filled to the maximum line.Oil—Some mechanics recommend switching to a thinner oil if you live where temperatures drop below freezing. Your best bet is to consult your owner’s manual or talk to your mechanic.Wiper fluid—Often overlooked, you’ll need freeze-resistant wiper fluid to keep your windshield clean and your vision clear.

Cold Weather & Battery CapacityIt isn’t only your engine that doesn’t like to start in the winter. Your battery capacity is reduced by the cold weather, too. A thorough inspection of your battery, cables, terminals, and fluid will help you make sure your car is ready for the winter. Check over the battery cables for cracks and breaks. The terminals should fit snugly with no loose connections. You can check your battery fluid by uncovering the refill hole (or sometimes holes). If the level is below the bottom of the cap, refill with distilled water. To read the level of charge in your battery, you will need to turn the engine off. Some batteries have a built-in hydrometer eye that tells you the amount of voltage remaining in the battery. If you prefer, a hand-held hydrometer can be used to collect the same information. While you’re inspecting your battery, look around for the manufacture date. Knowing how old your battery is can clue you in to when it will begin to lose charge. Shopping for a new battery? Never buy one with a six-month-old manufacture date.

Or, Maybe It’s time for a new car? After all these helpful tips and you still find yourself struggling through the winter with a car that has more bad days than good, maybe it’s time to think about a new ride! Get the car you’ve always wanted with financing that’s right for you, with our LOW RATE Auto Loans! You’ll Always get fast approval and easy payments with direct deposit.

Our auto refinancing options will reduce your current payment and could even give you cash back!

MARKET OUTLOOK 2017:What a difference a year makes. At this time last year, the market had finally recovered from an August swoon that left the S&P 500 more than 10% off its all-time highs, the first 10% correction in more than four years, with the worst still ahead in January and February 2016. Concerns over market risk were dominating the conversation: China (the primary driver of the August 2015 swoon), oil, the soaring U.S. dollar, tightening financial conditions, declining earnings, and the prospective first interest rate hike since before the Great Recession

As we look back at 2016, by and large, the market has reached the milestones we had forecast for the year, some a little more slowly than expected, but with some unexpected developments, such as the outcome of the U.S. presidential election and the vote for the U.K. to leave the European Union.

Other milestones required the election outcome as a catalyst, such as a shift in rate expectations and a transition to fiscal stimulus from monetary. The election itself was a milestone, as it is every time the White House occupant changes.

Here is an overview of what to watch and what it might mean for stock and bond market performance as we enter the New Year:The economic recovery that began in mid-2009 may pass its eighth birthday in 2017, as the odds of a recession — based on leading economic data — remain low. However, the risk of a recession due to a policy mistake (e.g., monetary, fiscal, trade, immigration) has increased heading into 2017. President elect Donald Trump and Congress will likely enact pro-growth policies in the first half of 2017, including corporate and personal tax cuts, increased spending on infrastructure and defense, and deregulation. These policies may boost economic growth (and change the drivers of growth) in 2017 and 2018.

Although gains in the labor market will likely continue to moderate in 2017, job growth remains robust enough to ensure two Federal Reserve (Fed) rate hikes. Inflation, which has been dormant due to falling commodity prices in recent years, may make a comeback in 2017, as above-potential gross domestic product (GDP) growth and a tightening labor market push up wages inflation.

If you have questions about how your investment future looks for 2017, please contact David Graham at South Jersey Financial Network at 856.232.9000 ext. 2807 to make a no obligation appointment to review your financial planning for 2017 and beyond. Did You Find Yourself Overspending this Holiday Season? How People Over Spend During Holidays and Some Tips on How Not to!• Self-gifting… Did you know nearly 60% of people are now self-gifting, according to the National Retail Federation? Try the 30-day rule; if you still want an item after 30 days, consider the purchase more seriously. However, if after 30 days you realize you no longer care, nix the idea – this can help eliminate impulse buying.• Traveling… Do some research and shop around for the lowest prices on airlines, hotels, cabs, etc. Also, if you and your family are planning a road trip, pack food instead of eating at rest stops. • Less is more?... A high price tag gift doesn’t automatically make it a better gift; thoughtful giving can prove to be more generous. Truly think about the person you’re buying a gift for and what they would enjoy. For example, maybe a mixtape or homemade card that cost less than $5 is more meaningful than a $20 CD and store-bought card. • If you find yourself to be one of those people who overspent during the holidays, don’t worry – you’re not the only one. That’s why SJFCU is offering some options to help you consolidate your debt.
