the lines of the TalentNZprogramme run by theMcGuinness Institute.‘‘It is about attracting the

right people and retainingthem. Theywant to go to aplacewhere they can havethe lifestyle, with a healthyecosystem. It’s where thegrowth is going to be.‘‘Education is a big thing.

If youwant to partake in theeconomies of the future,you need an educatedsociety.’’ Technology allowspeople to stay connected,MrGray adds.‘‘Connectivity is the key totourism’s future.’’Amessage from the

Kaiapoi students have completed achallenge to climb three ofNorthCanterbury’s prominentmountains.KaiapoiNorth School principal Jason

Miles says 29 year 5 to 8 students havecompleted the ‘‘Three Peaks Challenge’’to climbMt Thomas in theWaimakariridistrict onOctober 15,Mt Fyffe in theKaikoura district onOctober 22 andfinallyMt Isobel in theHurunui districtonMonday, November 17.‘‘It’s an exciting new initiative for our

children to challenge themselves and toget themout into our great outdoors,whichwe have introduced this year.‘‘And they are fairly steepmountains,

so it’s quite a challenge and the childrenneed to support each other.’’The new initiative has been organised

by deputy principal JackOldridge andyear 7 teacher Brayden Johnson, ‘‘whoare both very passionate about theoutdoors’’, MrMiles says.He says the initiative has beenwell

supported by parents, with some parentsjoining the climbs.Each trip has been on a school day,

with the students leavingKaiapoi at 7amand returning at 5.30pm,making for along day.After climbingMt Isobel onMonday,

the students celebratedwith a soak inthe hot pools at Hanmer Springs, beforereturning toKaiapoi. The students willreceive an achievement badge for theirefforts, MrMiles says.He says the school is planning for the

Charges set for renovated hallBy KIT CARSON

Hire charges for community groupsplanning to use the renovatedRangiora TownHall have been set by

theWaimakariri District Council.With the hall scheduled to be

officially opened on February 28,2015, and available for publicperformances onMarch 2, council hasagreed to charges recommended bystaff so community groups canmakebookings in advance.Staff consulted with key user groups

in an effort to set an affordable level ofcharges that also recognised thequality of the facilities that will beavailable.Rangiora Players, North Canterbury

Musical society, Dale Hartley Schoolof Speech and North CanterburyAcademy of Music are among thoseinvolved in the consultation processand support the level of charges.Staff are still working charges for

the commercial hire of the hall, basedon final operating costs. Council willconsider these as part of the LongTerm Plan Process.The charge for community use of the

main auditorium, with seatingcapacity of 380, has been set at $300 aday, pus power usage in excess of 50units a day, with the option of paying aflat fee of $100 a day, plus $2 for eachticket sold.

Rehearsals will be charged out at$100 with a maximum of 14 days, plusthree days for setup and packing up.A technician will be available at $40

a day.The small theatre, with seating for

150, will cost $50 an hour for amaximum of five hours, with full dayhire at $295.The Green Room, plus four studio

spaces are each available at $8 anhour for each room.The upstairs function room, which

accommodates up 100, is availablewhen the main auditorium is not inuse at $40 an hour.A base rental for the North

Canterbury Academy of Music hasbeen agreed on subject to studentnumbers, reassessed each year.All charges will be reviewed on July

1, 2016.A separate lease has been

negotiated for the cinema complexwith the lessee, who is offered theright to supply all food for allfunctions in the town hall.The lessee also has the licence to

supply all beverages, includingalcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks onthe premises.

Speeding drivers commonin the Hurunui District

The latest results from trafficspeed testingby theHurunuiYouthCouncil (HYC) revealthat drivers throughout thedistrict are slow learners.Over thepast three years

councilmembers andvolunteershave carriedouttests, using a speeddetectorsprovidedby theNewZealandRoadTransportAgency (RTA).Earlier testingwas carried

out inAmberley, but this year itwasextended toWaikari andCheviot.Results presented to last

week’sHurunuiDistrictCouncilmeeting, byHYCmemberSeanRyan, revealspeeding is commonthroughout thedistrict,with79.3percent of drivers onaverageexceeding thepostedlimits in all threeareas.Of those, 11percentwere

20km/hover the limit.Theworst offenderswere in

Amberley (89.44percent),followedbyCheviot (83.94percent) andWaikari (69.31percent).Abrief survey inWaiau,

where speedmonitorshavebeen inplace for some time,very fewexceeded thepostedlimits.More than700 vehicleswere

checked, the fastest beinga cartravelling throughAmberley at92.2 km/h, almost twice thelimit.MrRyan saidamajor

concern inAmberleywas thenumberof trucks speeding 10percentmore thanotherusers.This, he said,wouldbean

areaHYC focusedon in itsnext survey.Roadingandutilities

managerDavidEdge saidboththeRTAand theTruckingAssociationhadbeensupportive of the youth councilsurveys andwereprepared toact on receiving registrationnumbers of trucks travellingabove the speed limit.MrRyan said the recent

erectionof speedmonitors inAmberley, CulverdenandHanmerSpringswerea realbonus in remindingdrivers tokeep to the limit.Heexpressed thehope

monitors couldbebought forbothCheviot andWaikari.MrEdgepointedout costwas

a factor, beingmore than$10,000 for eachmonitorinstalled.Those inplacehavebeenbrought about throughcommunity fundraising effortsandcontributions fromwardcommittees.Speakingas a representative

of the council’s road safetycommittee, CrGaryCoopersaidhehadnothingbutadmiration for the youngpeoplewhohadcarriedout themonitoring, prepared tospendshours at night and inthemiddleofwinter to collectdata.

Show.AfterworkingSaturdaymorning cutting

firewood to raise funds for aworthy cause,I hadanenjoyableafternoonat the show.Oneof theprivileges of being amember

ofParliament is thehonourof officiallydeclaring the showopen. I alsohadavested interest in theGift Sheepcompetitionaswehadanentry.Therewere somegreat entries

unfortunatelywecameawayemptyhanded.Thereare gemsatA&PShows that are

easilymissed, for example theoldengines,pumpsandanearly rapidevaporationrefrigerationplant,manyofwhichareover100yearsold. Theyhavebeen lovinglyrestoredandoperating for all to see.The sheeppensarealwaysworth awalk

throughwith thebest examples of thebreeds’ that ournation’s standardof livingwasbuilt on.Butmypersonal favourite this yearwas

thewoodchopping.Marlboroughwasfortunate tohaveaxemen (andanaxewoman) fromAustralia competing againstHokitika’sWorldChampionAdamLowe.If youappreciate sport youcan’t helpbut

be impressedwithLowes skill andpower,despite a significant timehandicapheliterally blew the competitionaway.Anothermajor eventhosted in

Marlboroughon the sameweekendwasNelmacGardenMarlborough.This is auniqueevent that showcases the regionsbeautiful gardenswithworkshopsandsocial events suchas the JulieBiusodinnerand theGardenPartywhich Ihadthepleasureof attending. Therewereparticipants registered fromall overNewZealand.Lastweek saw theCanterburyA&P

Show, thebiggest of its type in the country,which I attendedon theThursday. Thequality of all of theseevents is due to thehardworkandpreparation that goes intoorganising themby themanyvolunteersand Inote thatworkhasalreadybegunpreparing fornext year.Thenext timeyouattendoneof these

events, sparea thought for thedozensofvolunteers thatwork tomake these iconiceventspossible.Theseevents area vital part of the fabric

of provincialNewZealand thatwemustcelebrate andpreserve.

Exceptional youthtalent displayedI’vewrittenon this subject beforeandchances are Iwill again.Several recent eventshaveonceagain

highlighted theexceptional talent,skills, intellect andgreatpersonalitiesthat abound inour youngpeople.A large gatheringof students and

parents recently attended the launchofanewBiodiversity bookentitled ‘Moko’.Chapterswere compiledby anumberofbudding youngauthors,whohadindividually researched,writtenandillustratedanaspect ofBiodiversity andits special place in theoverallenvironment.Theworkof these youngpeoplewas

outstandingand indicatedavery goodunderstandingof the importanceofprotectingand reversing thedeclineofbiodiversity inour country.Theyalsodisplayedahigh level of

understandingof the valuablecontributionhealthybiodiversitymakesto theoverall healthandwellbeingof usall. This is a reality thatmanyofmygenerationarenowslowly coming tounderstand.After generationsofencouragement todestroyournaturalenvironment in thenameofprogress,productivity andwealth generation, as acountrywearenowworkingout anappropriatebalancebetweenessentialproduction from the landandan

appropriate level of environmentalprotection.At another event, theNorth

CanterburySport andRecreationTrustAwards, recognition for anumberof ouryoungHurunui sports peoplehighlighted thedepthof talent and skillwehave relative to ourpopulation.Their commitment, sheerhardwork

anddetermination to succeed shouldbean inspiration to their peers and tousall.Theannual selectionprocess for

members of ourYouthCouncil drewanotheroutstanding groupof youngpeoplemotivated to stepupand furtherdevelop their leadershipanddecisionmaking skills.I sense thenewYouthCouncil

members’ keenness to take their councilto anew level next year andmeetmychallenge for them todebate someoftheir community’smore serious issues.Finally our annualStudent

AchievementAwardshavebeen judgedandwill beannounced inDecember.The independent judges commented

on theexceptional standardof theapplicants, thedifficulty theyhaddetermining thewinners and theprivilege they felt beingprivy to theworkandaspirations of somany fineyoungpeople.

HerDad, Zane Purdom,says the scooter had beentaken bymistake.The peoplewho took the

MsLoffhagenhas recently set upawebsite for theSuffolk breed.She says she is also particularly

grazes cattle on a 260hectare dryland farm, nearHawarden, andsays theSuffolk is suited to the

generation studbreeder,following in the footsteps of hergrandparents Tug andMargaretBurrows andher parentsMartyandAnneLoffhagen,whohavebredRomneys, SouthSuffolks,EnglishLeicesters andhalfbreeds.She says she started breeding

Superior genetics saw a parttimedairy farmer win supreme championjersey at the Canterbury Agriculturaland Pastoral Show last week.Rangiora farmers Peter and Claire

Hansen were surprised to beat fulltime dairy farmers to claim tophonours for the first time, but MrHansen says his champion cow 4yearold Lilac Grove Prides Ringlet isdescended from a successful bloodline.‘‘It’s a lot of hard work. You come

down onMonday and you stay hereuntil Friday. I think I’ve averagedabout three hours sleep a night sinceMonday.‘‘But it’s definitely worth it.’’Mr Hansen says he milks just 20 cows,

juggling milking before and after work,alongside his business Hansen SepticSystems.‘‘I would love to do it full time on a

larger scale, but farms are pretty hardto buy into.’’His grandfather, Fred Hansen

started the Lilac Grove Jersey Stud atFernside in 1936 and had considerableshowing success, with two differentcows winning supreme champion threetimes each at Royal Shows over theyears.‘‘When he retired I got keen. I was

just 10yearsold, but I went to hisdispersal sale and he gave me his bestcow family,’’ Mr Hansen says.‘‘The one advantage of breeding

pedigree stock is that you breed forlongevity.‘‘When you show your animals there

is a misconception that you breed forlooks, but it’s about getting goodconfirmation, a wellbalanced cow,with good udders and good teatplacement, which leads to good

production.’’Mr Hansen says Prides Ringlet’s win

is not a oneoff, as she was placedsecond for her agegroup in the NewZealand purebred Jersey breedersproduction competition, producing490kg of milk solids last season.‘‘She is a cow that I’ve bred and she

just gets a little bit better each year.She is a once in a life time cow andmygrandfather was lucky enough to breedtwo of them.’’He says he has received considerable

interest in the cow as a mother andwhile he is willing to sell her calves,she is not for sale.It was a successful show all round for

the Hansen family, with five of thecouple’s six children entering calves,with son Israel winning juniorchampion.

Two long serving committeemembers oftheFriends ofWaikariHospitalwererecognised recently by being awarded lifemembership.Jill Fairbairn andMayHassallwere

acknowledged for theirmany years ofsupport to the ‘‘Friends’’ at a luncheonattheHurunui Stables.May says she became involvedwith the

Friendswhen shewas asked to help outwhen theWednesdayClub,which is heldonce amonth,was formed.She took onmany roles in the committee

and this yearwas the first shehadn’t beenable to attend theCulverdenFete,wheretheFriends have amajor fund raisingraffle.Now inher 80s,May says shedoesn’tdo asmuchas sheused to but still remainsa loyal supporter andhelps outwhere shecan.Jill Fairbairnhas beenpart of the

Friends since itwas formed in 1984,whenWaikariHospitalwas under threat ofclosure.‘‘I had three kids born there,my

husbandwas born there andmy fatherdied there.When therewas talk of closingthehospital, a groupof strong, determinedpeople got together and fought theNorthCanterburyHospital Board to keep itopen.’’The group formed to createFriends of

WaikariHospital andwithpressure fromthemand the community,WaikariHospital stayed open.Over the years, theFriends haveused

moneydonated to them toundertakemajor projects like renovations to thebuilding, aswell as buying items suchaselectric bedswhich gives thepatientmoreautonomyand saves the backs of hospitalstaff.Jill says she loves bookwork and for the

past 12 years has taken on the role oftreasurer,which she enjoys immensely.Thanks to public support, theFriendsmailbox is often filledwith donations andJill says theFriendshave built up asubstantial amount ofmoney.‘‘Wewould really like to use someof the

money to put in automatic doors to thehospital entrance. Itwouldmake it a loteasier for peoplewithwheelchairs orwalking frames. Thedoors could beoperatedwith a button.’’While theFriendswould like to do this,

theEarthquakeCommissionwouldneedto tick it off as being sound in that areabefore any structureswere altered to fitthe doors.With such a strong committee and

ongoing support from the community, theFriends ofWaikariHospitalwill continueto provide equipment andother items forpatient comfort thatmakes the countryhospital a uniqueplace to stay.

Big responsefor Anzac rideThe 100 horse, 100 year ride, planned fornext year’s Anzac commemorations inWaikari, has snowballed, withregistrations for the ride nearly full.After a story ran inTheNews about the

ride to remember theCanterburyMountedRiflemenwho fought in thedesert duringWorldWar I,NewZealanddescendants, as far away as theUnitedStates andAustralia, registered and arehaving horses trained here so they cantake part in the event.Organiser TerryKing says the amount

of peoplewanting to take part in the ridehas been overwhelming and the story hasbeen picked up all over theworld viaFacebook.‘‘Wehave hadpeople fromEngland and

other parts of theworldmaking contactabout the event, it’s been amazing.’’Training dayswill be held in various

areas to get horses and riders used toriding in formation so thatwhen the 50pairs of horses ride intoWaikari for theAnzacDay ceremony, it will bewithmilitary precision.Jackie Clark, fromHawarden, has come

on board as eventmanager and is takingcare of logistics, which she has had plentyof experience doing, leaving the horses,riders and filming to Terry.Terry says he is raising funds for the

mounted riflemen’s uniformswhich arebeing sent over fromAustralia, and hewill initially fund it out of his ownpocket.‘‘Thewhole project is really kicking off

nowandwe are determined tomake it amemorable one it’s not the sort of thingthatwill probably happen again inmost ofour lifetimes.’’For further information and contacts go
