And just one point separated the two top contenders resulting in contrasting emotions for the owners and handlers in the class which was unusual for only having female stock up for contention. Oxford farmers Andrew and Udette Stokes of the Sinai Angus Stud, who won the Cup for the first time in their 11 year history of showing at the Canterbury A & P show, were elated. But Doc and Jan Sidey of the Jandoc Hereford Stud at Hawarden were ‘‘gutted’’. Andrew Stokes says he is ‘‘absolutely stoked’’ to have taken out the coveted trophy with his 7-year-old Angus cow with a two- month-old bull calf at foot. It was the first time he had qualified for the Cup, winning his way into the line up after winning the Angus cow and calf class, the champion senior female Angus class and the supreme champion angus award. ‘‘There were man hugs (with the handler of the calf Kevin) and I was in tears and the kids were in tears,’’ says Andrew. ‘‘It’s my biggest win ever, it’s massive. There was no bull in the ring. It’s very unprecedented not having any big bulls in the final, but I couldn’t believe the line up of cows. I wouldn’t have seen a line up like that for a long time,’’ Mr Stokes says of his competition. He founded his Sinai Angus Stud 14 years ago and has 50 stud cows on a 750 hectare farm, which is a mix of cattle, sheep, deer, cropping and dairy grazing. Nor’west gale whips up fires By ROBYN BRISTOW Š Continued Page 2 Nor’west gales whipped up fires, tore limbs and branches from trees, ripped roofing iron from sheds and homes and flattened calf sheds, beehives and roads signs, in North Canterbury early Saturday morning. The gales began to pick up at about 4am with huge gusts slamming into properties across North Canterbury for about four hours with willow trees, in particular, taking a hammering. Principal fire officers are calling on residents to listen to long term forecasts before lighting fires after volunteer firemen were run off their feet trying to cope with the calls across North Canterbury as fires, thought to be out, were rekindled by the wind and raced out of control. Waimakariri district principal fire officer Tim Sheppard is urging people to listen to forecasts and take heed of high wind warnings. ‘‘I would have had 30 calls on my pager when the high winds hit in the early hours of Saturday morning. ‘‘It was ridiculous, particularly as 90 percent of them were rekindles of old fires people thought were out,’’ he says. Mr Sheppard was surprised fires were on properties where ‘‘people and farmers’’ should have known better having lived in the district for many years. ‘‘If you have had a fire and it starts to blow that is the cue to go and check it. ‘‘If it is too hot to put your hand in and you burn yourself or even if it is just warm, then it is still active and needs to be attended to,’’ he says. This episode is going to cost a lot of people, a lot of money,’’ says Mr Sheppard. There were fires in hedges, shelter belts, hay stacks and ‘‘embers for miles’’. Mr Sheppard said the fires were spread across the Waimakariri district, but the majority were in the Cust- Oxford area which really ‘‘copped’’ the nor’west gale. Firemen also helped batten down the hatches on several homes and sheds across the region where iron was ripped from roofs and in a couple of cases where roofs were lifted off. Hurunui principal fire officer Allan Grigg echoed Mr Sheppard’s plea for common sense when lighting fires when high winds are forecast. A fixed wing aircraft was needed to help firemen contain one rekindled fire in crop residue at Motunau Beach.

KaikouraMayorWinstonGray is excited about thefuture, after attending theG20 Summit in Brisbanelast week.MrGray and district

very busy time. It waswellworth going,’’ an excitedMrGray said, after attending a‘‘Global Cafe’’ run over twodays, and attended bymayors from townsthroughout Australia andspeakers from around theworld. The Sustainable Leaders

Forumwas one ofmanyforums throughout the twodays andwas hosted byBrisbanebasedEC3Global, which runs thesustainable tourismprogrammeEarthCheck.Kaikourawas recognised atthe forum for receivingplatinum status earlier thisyear.MrGray says he is aware

of only one other town, atown inMexico, which hasreceived platinum status inthe programme, although anumber of businessesaround theworld haveattained platinum status.‘‘It’s a point of difference.

When you drive into a townand you think ‘what’sdifferent about this place?’.‘‘With EarthCheck you

measure and benchmark awhole number of things.‘‘Youmeasurewhere you

BeforeKaikouraentered theEarthCheckprogramme, the town’slandfill wasestimated tohave aboutthree yearsof life left that was 14years agoandMrGrayestimates itstill has fiveyears of lifeleft, due tothe town’s

The biggest point of difference you will find with OnyxHomes compared to most is you will NEVER deal with a“Sales Consultant”.Quality and value are two words that are misused andabused by Sales Consultants chasing their commissionsby over stating and under proving. At Onyx Homes you deal directly with the managementteam and owners Richard Freeman and Paul West whendesigning, pricing and building your newhome. “This is our business, our livelihoodand our reputation and we ensure we getit right every time” states Richard.NO “Sales Consultant” means NO salescommissions. Couple that with the factthey own their own brand and don’tpay Franchisee royalties or cost “safety

contingencies” due to their superior IT platform OnyxHomes can save clients up to $23,000.00 before you evenstart on an average $300,000 build!!It’s a misconception that choosing an off the shelfstandard plan buys you an affordable home. Its very likelythe exact same floor plan will be built time and time againand could even be built right next door! Onyx Homesbelieves you should be unique and build the home that

suits your individual lifestyleand living needs. The truth is atOnyx Homes their award winningdesigners will design a customfloor plan that often costs lessthan that of a “Standard Plan”.All tradesman and suppliersare handpicked and stringently

vetted and have negotiated volume purchasing supplydeals to ensure clients get market leading pricing. The fully managed project ensures total quality withOnyx Homes standard 15 step quality inspectionsthroughout the build from start to finish. Along withthis you receive complementary colour consultancykeeping you on top of the latest trends and colours. Youalso get the peace of mind of a full 10 Year RegisteredMaster Builders Guarantee. Onyx Homes don’t strive forexcellence, they expect it!Building your new house shouldn’t be stressful; it shouldbe fun and easy. Onyx Homes ensures this is the case.

HERES THE FACTS – Stated by Richard Freeman, Director Onyx Homes LtdDon’t believe everything you hear in the media and some building companies trying to margin enhance making ridiculous

statements about huge building price increases. If you want genuine best pricing and top quality give Onyx Homes a call. You are guaranteed to talk to LOCAL industry

professionals with years of experience rather than a sales person trained over night drafted into the industry with limitedknowledge and zero idea on building costs working off a pre prepared song sheet. A sad but true statement in many cases.Honesty, integrity, experience and common sense always outweighs “smoke and mirrors” and unfortunately common sense

is not that common in many cases. Building commodity prices ARE stable, and I will personally guarantee that.

Suffolk ram claims supreme animal prize

Champion ram . . . Hawardenfarmer Penni Loffhagen (in thewhite coat) claimed supremechampion animal of the show andsupreme championmeat sheepwith her Suffolk ram at theCanterbury Agricultural andPastoral Show last week.

PenniLoffhagenwas just pleasedto break theSouthdowndominance of themeat sheepclasses.TheHawarden farmerwon

supremechampionmeat sheepwithher Suffolk ram, whichwasbredby JohnMiles at his Colefordstud at Lyndhurst, before goingon to be chosenas the supremechampion animal of the show. She says itwas the first timea

ram fromTawhai Studhadwonsupremechampionmeat sheep, asectionwhichhas beendominated in recent years bySouthdown sheep, withBlenheimfarmerChristina Jordanwinningthe last three years in a row.‘‘This is huge for theSuffolk,’’

says theNorthernSouth Island

SuffolkBreeders president.‘‘I am really intomoving the

breed forward, so this sort ofsuccess certainly helps get somerecognition.‘‘I like theSuffolk. They are a

very attractive sheepanda verymeaty sheep. Theyhave goodconfirmation ofmeat andlongevity. That’swhatwebreed to it’s got to last.’’Tohelp give the breed aboost,

MsLoffhagenhas recently set upawebsite for theSuffolk breed. She says she is also particularly

‘‘honoured’’ towin theFrankO’Reilly Trophy, for the supremechampionmeat sheep, as sheknew the former stock agent. She farms 500Suffolk ewes and

grazes cattle on a 260hectare dryland farm, nearHawarden, andsays theSuffolk is suited to the

property.MsLoffhagen is a third

generation studbreeder, following in the footsteps of hergrandparents Tug andMargaretBurrows andher parentsMartyandAnneLoffhagen, whohavebredRomneys, SouthSuffolks,EnglishLeicesters andhalfbreeds. She says she started breeding

Suffolks in 1989withencouragement fromherparents.

‘Once in a life time cow’ wins

Champion . . . Peter Hansen and his 4yearold Jersey cow Lilac Grove Prides Ringlethad a successful time at last week’sCanterbury A&P Show. PHOTO: DAVID HILL

By DAVID HILL

Superior genetics saw a parttimedairy farmer win supreme championjersey at the Canterbury Agriculturaland Pastoral Show last week.Rangiora farmers Peter and Claire

Hansen were surprised to beat fulltime dairy farmers to claim tophonours for the first time, but MrHansen says his champion cow 4yearold Lilac Grove Prides Ringlet isdescended from a successful bloodline.‘‘It’s a lot of hard work. You come

down onMonday and you stay hereuntil Friday. I think I’ve averagedabout three hours sleep a night sinceMonday.‘‘But it’s definitely worth it.’’Mr Hansen says he milks just 20 cows,

juggling milking before and after work, alongside his business Hansen SepticSystems.‘‘I would love to do it full time on a

larger scale, but farms are pretty hardto buy into.’’His grandfather, Fred Hansen

started the Lilac Grove Jersey Stud atFernside in 1936 and had considerableshowing success, with two differentcows winning supreme champion threetimes each at Royal Shows over theyears.‘‘When he retired I got keen. I was

just 10yearsold, but I went to hisdispersal sale and he gave me his bestcow family,’’ Mr Hansen says.‘‘The one advantage of breeding

pedigree stock is that you breed forlongevity.‘‘When you show your animals there

is a misconception that you breed forlooks, but it’s about getting goodconfirmation, a wellbalanced cow, with good udders and good teatplacement, which leads to good

production.’’Mr Hansen says Prides Ringlet’s win

is not a oneoff, as she was placedsecond for her agegroup in the NewZealand purebred Jersey breedersproduction competition, producing490kg of milk solids last season.‘‘She is a cow that I’ve bred and she

just gets a little bit better each year. She is a once in a life time cow andmygrandfather was lucky enough to breedtwo of them.’’He says he has received considerable

interest in the cow as a mother andwhile he is willing to sell her calves, she is not for sale.It was a successful show all round for

the Hansen family, with five of thecouple’s six children entering calves, with son Israel winning juniorchampion.

Two long serving committeemembers oftheFriends ofWaikariHospitalwererecognised recently by being awarded lifemembership.Jill Fairbairn andMayHassallwere

and this yearwas the first shehadn’t beenable to attend theCulverdenFete, wheretheFriends have amajor fund raisingraffle. Now inher 80s,May says shedoesn’tdo asmuchas sheused to but still remainsa loyal supporter andhelps outwhere shecan.Jill Fairbairnhas beenpart of the

Friends since itwas formed in 1984,whenWaikariHospitalwas under threat ofclosure.‘‘I had three kids born there,my

husbandwas born there andmy fatherdied there. When therewas talk of closingthehospital, a groupof strong, determinedpeople got together and fought theNorthCanterburyHospital Board to keep itopen.’’The group formed to createFriends of

WaikariHospital andwithpressure fromthemand the community,WaikariHospital stayed open.Over the years, theFriends haveused

moneydonated to them toundertakemajor projects like renovations to thebuilding, aswell as buying items suchaselectric bedswhich gives thepatientmoreautonomyand saves the backs of hospitalstaff.Jill says she loves bookwork and for the

past 12 years has taken on the role oftreasurer, which she enjoys immensely. Thanks to public support, theFriendsmailbox is often filledwith donations andJill says theFriendshave built up asubstantial amount ofmoney.‘‘Wewould really like to use someof the

money to put in automatic doors to thehospital entrance. Itwouldmake it a loteasier for peoplewithwheelchairs orwalking frames. Thedoors could beoperatedwith a button.’’While theFriendswould like to do this,

theEarthquakeCommissionwouldneedto tick it off as being sound in that areabefore any structureswere altered to fitthe doors. With such a strong committee and

ongoing support from the community, theFriends ofWaikariHospitalwill continueto provide equipment andother items forpatient comfort thatmakes the countryhospital a uniqueplace to stay.

Big responsefor Anzac rideThe 100 horse, 100 year ride, planned fornext year’s Anzac commemorations inWaikari, has snowballed, withregistrations for the ride nearly full. After a story ran inTheNews about the

ride to remember theCanterburyMountedRiflemenwho fought in thedesert duringWorldWar I,NewZealanddescendants, as far away as theUnitedStates andAustralia, registered and arehaving horses trained here so they cantake part in the event.Organiser TerryKing says the amount

of peoplewanting to take part in the ridehas been overwhelming and the story hasbeen picked up all over theworld viaFacebook.‘‘Wehave hadpeople fromEngland and

other parts of theworldmaking contactabout the event, it’s been amazing.’’Training dayswill be held in various

areas to get horses and riders used toriding in formation so thatwhen the 50pairs of horses ride intoWaikari for theAnzacDay ceremony, it will bewithmilitary precision.Jackie Clark, fromHawarden, has come

on board as eventmanager and is takingcare of logistics, which she has had plentyof experience doing, leaving the horses, riders and filming to Terry.Terry says he is raising funds for the

mounted riflemen’s uniformswhich arebeing sent over fromAustralia, and hewill initially fund it out of his ownpocket.‘‘Thewhole project is really kicking off

nowandwe are determined tomake it amemorable one it’s not the sort of thingthatwill probably happen again inmost ofour lifetimes.’’For further information and contacts go

YOU’REINVITED

Grand OpeningRANGIORA

Total Realty, an established and respected brand in Canterbury now hasbright new offices in Rangiora, opening November 29th. Located on thecorner of Blackett and King Streets the new office is a welcoming spacewith great parking.

Over the past year many Cantabrians have made the wise decision tolist their prized properties with Total Realty. Managing Director, RachaelCone says more than 1000 people in the South Island listed and soldtheir homes with the company in 2013 - most of these being in theCanterbury area.

A number of high-profile real estate companies often work on a rate ofaround 4 per cent, but with Total Realty’s starting rate at 1 percent (1.25%for lifestyle properties and areas outside of Rangiora and Christchurch)the move to Rachael’s team brings significant financial rewards forsellers. Because Total Realty agents sell on average four times moreproperties than their local competitors, they also have more experiencein marketing and selling.

“We believe homeowners deserve the maximum value from the sale oftheir property. That’s why we’ve built our service around fair and realisticcommission rates, without compromising on service or results,” Rachaelsays. “Our agents sell so many homes, they seriously don’t have tocharge clients an arm and a leg.”

And what’s great about Total Realty agents is not only do they list theproperty, they sell it too. “We take the ‘buyers agent’ out of the process. The listing agent does everything, including interacting with all thebuyers, negotiating the sale and keeping both parties moving forwarduntil the sale is unconditional. This is much more advantagous for theseller as the agent negotiating their sale is actually working for themto get the best price, rather than working to get a good price for thebuyer. The client feedback on this has been overwhelming, with manyhomeowners feeling they are getting a better price with the Total Realtyselling method. We firmly believe all agencies should be operating likethis in the 21st century. Some agencies still try to convince a seller thatthey need buyer’s agents and networks but very few people fall for thisthese days. The internet has equalised everything and buyers can sitin the comfort of their home and see all properties with the click of abutton. They don’t have to wait for an agent to call!”

“After we complete a sale for the client, we ask them to fill in a survey,”Rachael says. “To date over 96 percent of our clients have rated ourservice and professional conduct as exceptional.”

Total Realty Managing Director Rachael Cone answers a few questions:

What’s the strongest selling type of property at the moment? We are selling properties from $200,000 to over the $1,000,000 mark.We recently listed a $1.2 million property and had it under offer in 48hours. The low-middle section $200,000 - $500,000 is sought after at themoment with investors and first home buyers both having interest in thisrange. With our professional photography and marketing skills we canshowcase homes in any price bracket very well.

How much does a lower commission rate really save people?Based on the median house price in Canterbury, homeowners canexpect to save over $12,000 when compared with standard commissionrates.

What should we do if we are thinking of selling and want to get incontact with one of your agents? You can visit our website at – www.totalrealty.co.nz – or pop on in to ournew office – corner Blackett and King St. Our team would absolutelylove to see you!

If you are serious about selling your property –and for less commission – then choose to list

with the team at Total Realty.
