EXHIBITIONS

These rare images of five principal women dancers from the Royal Ballet of Cambodia are on display in the United States for the first time. Recently rediscovered, catalogued, restored, and digitized, images from 1927 capture the dancers performing the postures and gestures from the classical canon. French scholar George Groslier, who was the director of the National Museum of Cambodia, initiated the project to preserve the memory of the ballet, which he believed was endangered. This exhibition is an initiative of the Ecole Francais D'Extreme Orient (EFEO) and the National Museum of Cambodia, with support from UNESCO and the Institut Francais du Cambodge. This exhibition is part of New York's Season of Cambodia festival (April 6 - May 31).

Princess Norodom Buppha Devi in conversation with Peter Sellars

Her Royal Highness Princess Norodom Buppha Devi, Cambodia’s esteemed prima ballerina of the 1960s and a genuine pioneer in the revival and preservation of Cambodian classical court dance, talks candidly about her art form, its mercilessly demanding training, and its war-torn history. She will converse with path-breaking theater and opera director Peter Sellars. A screening of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia and preview excerpts from the Khmer Dance Project, a program created by Anne H. Bass in conjunction with the Center for Khmer Studies and the Dance Division, will be included. Presented in conjunction with Season of Cambodia, an initiative of Cambodian Living Arts and Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Season of Cambodia is co-chaired by Anne H. Bass, John Burt, and Darren Walker. Lead support comes from the Ford Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, The Kaplen Foundation, Asian Cultural Council,Bloomberg Philanthropies, The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, U.S. Embassy Phnom Penh, Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation and Henry Luce Foundation.

This survey explores the history of Latinos in popular music in the United States from the 1940s to the present. Material about stars such as Tito Puente, Ritchie Valens, Celia Cruz, Carlos Santana, and Selena documents individual creativity, while a display of items about Latino music and dance before World War II from LPA’s collections expands the exhibition's historical scope. Join us for local student ensemble concerts on Wednesday afternoons in June.

American Sabor, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution, was created by EMP Museum, the University of Washington, and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. Its national tour and related programs are made possible by Ford Motor Company Fund.

The Folk Music Revival

Folk music and its revival in New York during the 1950s and 60s owed as much to collectors, archivists, and audiophiles who populated Greenwich Village as it did to the performers, artists, and club owners who gravitated there during one of America's most politically and socially-charged eras.

Nearly 40 years ago, black and brown youth started hip-hop in the Bronx during one of the lowest points of the borough’s history. Amidst the burning buildings, crime, drugs, and gangs that pervaded many communities, hip-hop culture emerged as a musical nexus, emanating creativity and liberating struggle.

This spring, we are proud to announce the launch of Rhapsodic City: Music of New York, a new interdisciplinary series devoted to exploring some of these unique musical stories of the 20th century. Over the course of six weeks, join us for presentations by scholars, performances by leading musical figures, and screenings of remarkable documentary films from the Performing Arts Library collections.
