Dire di che cosa si occupa quotidianamente Olivia Palermo non è così facile come sembra. Riveste tanti ruoli diversi a rotazione: consulente, editor, imprenditrice, stylist e – il suo preferito – modella. Quindi vestirsi al mattino per andare al lavoro le richiede un’attenta riflessione e… pianificazione. Un giorno nonè mai uguale all’altro e, se per tutti vale la regola generale “meglio troppo eleganti che troppo informali”, per Olivia si tratta piuttosto di trovare un felice compromesso. In queste pagine, ci racconta come lo stile sia il risultato di un buon equilibrio.

Defining what Olivia Palermo does on a daily basis isn’t as easy as it sounds. She wears a slew of different hats – which seem to rotate daily. She’s a consultant, an editor, an entrepreneur, a stylist and, her personal favorite – a model. So, when it comes to getting dressed for her day at the office – it requires some thought… and planning. No two days are the same and while the rule of thumb usually goes ‘it’s better to be over dressed than under dressed’, for Palermo, it’s all about a happy medium. Here, she tells us how she finds her sartorial balance.

Vestirsi per il lavoro è una sfida per chiunque: ci sono davvero tanti fattori di cui tenere conto. Per Olivia Palermo, non c’è un giorno uguale all’altro. Perciò le abbiamo chiesto di rivelarci il segreto su come vestirsi nel modo giusto sia per i meeting, sia per uscire la sera, ed essere sempre assolutamente impeccabile.Getting dressed for work is something everyone struggles with, as there are so many factors one must take into consideration. Since no two days are the same for Olivia Palermo, we wanted to know how

she manages to dress for the day… and seamlessly transition into night.

Working9 to 5…

What’s an average day like in your life? There isn’t an average day, but there is always structure within everything that I do. I live in New York but work mostly on European time – that’s where my business is. I’m usually six hours ahead when I’m in New York and when I’m in Europe I am normally six hours behind. It’s called great time management (Laughs).

How are you dressing for work these days? I do like dressing up in the morning. I don’t over think the process and I dress for myself. I think the thing about getting dressed is that it really depends on the situation. If you are going to the office and you have meetings, for the woman that’s on the go, you should have flats in your bag, but you should wear a great pair of heels. That always completes a look. Right now, I’m very much into a clean look – like a crisp button-down shirt with a pencil skirt or with a cashmere sweater. It’s always a great option. I also love to layer. I also suggest a fierce pair of pumps or a strappy sandal. That’s what I’ve been wearing lately.

Do you think there’s a difference between a normal day and a day full of meetings? Would you dress differently?I really try to dress for my environment and what’s

Com’è una tua giornata tipo? Non c’è una giornata tipo, ma c’è sempre organizzazione in tutto ciò che faccio. Vivo a New York ma il mio ufficio si trova in Europa. Quindi di solito quando sono a New York sono sei ore avanti e quando sono in Europa sono sei ore indietro. Ci vuole un’eccellente gestione del tempo con giornate così lunghe (Ride).

Come ti vesti per il lavoro in questi giorni? Mi piace vestirmi bene al mattino. Non ci penso troppo e mi vesto per me stessa. Penso che il modo di vestirsi dipenda moltissimo dalla situazione. Per andare in ufficio e affrontare dei meeting, una donna dinamica dovrebbe avere un paio di ballerine nella borsa, ma indossare tacchi strepitosi: completano sempre il look. In questo momento mi piace moltissimo un look pulito – come una camicia button-down di cotone e una gonna a matita o un pull di cashmere. È sempre un’ottima scelta. Mi piacciono anche le sovrapposizioni. Aggiungerei décolletées grintose o sandali a listini. Ultimamente mi sto vestendo così.

appropriate. I think that if I’m going to a meeting and if I have something in the evening, I might carry an extra accessory and put it on – that creates a smooth transition from ‘day to night’. You can also play up the make-up ever so slightly.

How important is comfort to you when you are getting dressed?I think that there’s a lot of beautiful yet comfortable fashion today, so it’s just a matter of finding what works for one’s body type and how to wear it well.

So you live in New York City. How does the city affect your style? I am always inspired by the vast amount of international cultures that exist here. The New York City woman, in my eyes, is very pulled together and always looks great. I’m also alwaysinspired by the people I see on the street – how can you not be?!

How do you define your personal style and aesthetic? My aesthetic is eclectic but there is always a polished element to it. It’s a little structured and definitely accessorized. I like to add pops of colour to an outfit in a watchband, a pair of socks, a belt, a bag or even a pair of sunglasses.

Do you feel that your style changes or is it consistent? As I’ve gotten older, I now know what works and what doesn’t. Now, I obviously don’t wear things that I wore when I was 18. When you’re younger, you play around a little bit more.

Do you have a go-to ‘uniform’? I do. During my off time, I can be found in my leggings and a sweater. That’s for sure!

all’occasione. Se so di avere un meeting e anche un impegno per la serata, porto con me un accessorio extra da aggiungere, per creare una transizione fluida dall’ufficio al cocktail. Si può anche accentuare leggermente il make up.

Quanto è importante il comfort quando ti vesti? Penso che oggi ci siano tante proposte che sono insieme belle e confortevoli, quindi si tratta piuttosto di trovare ciò che meglio si adatta alla propria tipologia fisica e capire come indossarlo al meglio.

Vivi a New York. Come influenza il tuo stile questa città?Traggo sempre ispirazione dalla moltitudine di culture diverse che coesistono qui. La donna newyorkese, come la vedo io, ha sempre un look impeccabile e uno splendido aspetto. Anche la gente che incontro per strada mi offre nuovi spunti – come potrebbe essere altrimenti?

Come definiresti il tuo stile personale? Il mio stile è eclettico, ma sempre con una componente di ricercatezza. È leggermente strutturato e decisamente accessoriato. Mi piace aggiungere ai miei outfit qualche tocco di colore – il cinturino di un orologio, un paio di calze, una cintura, una borsa, o anche un paio di occhiali da sole.

Pensi che il tuo stile sia in evoluzione o costante? Ora che sono adulta, ho capito cosa mi sta bene e cosa no. Naturalmente non mi vesto come quando avevo 18 anni, perchè è giusto sperimentare di più quando si è giovani.

Hai una tua “divisa” irrinunciabile?Sì. Nel tempo libero mi vedrete sempre con leggings e pull. Statene certi!

What’s an average day like in your life? There isn’t an average day, but there is always structure within everything that I do. I live in New York but work mostly on European time – that’s where my business is. I’m usually six hours ahead when I’m in New York and when I’m in Europe I am normally six hours behind. Com’è una tua giornata tipo? Non c’è una giornata tipo, ma c’è sempre organizzazione in tutto ciò che faccio. Vivo a New York ma il mio ufficio si trova in Europa. Quindi di solito quando sono a New York sono sei ore avanti e quando sono in Europa sono sei ore indietro. Ci vuole un’eccellente gestione del tempo con giornate così lunghe (Ride).

Come ti vesti per il lavoro in questi giorni? Mi piace vestirmi bene al mattino. Non ci penso troppo e mi vesto per me stessa. Penso che il modo di vestirsi dipenda moltissimo dalla situazione. Per andare in ufficio e affrontare dei meeting, una donna dinamica dovrebbe avere un paio di ballerine nella borsa, ma indossare tacchi strepitosi: completano sempre il look. In questo momento mi piace moltissimo un look pulito – come una camicia button-down di cotone e una gonna a matita o un pull di cashmere. È sempre un’ottima scelta. Mi piacciono anche le sovrapposizioni. Aggiungerei décolletées grintose o sandali a listini. Ultimamente mi sto vestendo così.
