CATCH THE WAVE!!

STIMULATE

Happy 2017! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and were able to spend time with family and friends. Our 2017 promises to be an exciting year!

As any new year begins, we all tend to look at what we can change in our lives. How can I live a healthier life? How can I be a better friend? All those questions and more tend to swirl in our minds this time of year. As you begin your life in 2017, I want to challenge you to think about how you can Be the Change, as the theme of our 2017 State Convention encourages us to do.

How can you catch the wave and be the change at the local, state, and even international levels of DKG? Are you connecting with others in your chapter? Do you step up and volunteer to take on leadership duties in your chapter? Are you reconnecting with those who may have left your chap-ter? Research shows us that they are waiting for us to reach out to them, to invite them back into the fold.

You can be the change in many different ways. Have you thought about attending the Alpha Rho State

convention in Medford April 28-30? Our planning committee is working hard to create a special time for all of us. If you have never attended a state convention, make this one your first. If you’ve attended before, make this a return visit. We need you to join us in Medford, as convention just won’t be the same without you.

I recently returned from my fourth teaching trip to Shanghai, where I was working with 49 freshmen at Shanghai Normal University—Tianhua Col-lege. I leave each visit exhausted and invigorated to continue the important work we do. These students learned

about inclusion for the first time in their lives, cracking the door open to inviting young children with disabili-ties into their future classrooms. They asked intelligent questions, raised concerns, and spoke eloquently about their plans. They are the change that we are looking for in our teachers. They are passionate, inquisitive, and ready to make a difference in the lives of young children of all abilities. They embody our convention theme, be the change. These young students, who have never known anything differ-ent, are ready to reach out and be the change for future generations. How do we do the same?

As I approach the last months of my presidency, I would like to continue to encourage you to invite me to your chapter meetings and events. I would love to join you!

I wish you all a prosperous new year, full of love, laughter, and good times with family, friends, and DKG sisters. Get involved, get connected, and Be the Change.

STANDING RULES STATUS UPDATE

Jean Fairbairn, Interim Chair

Time does pass quickly for many of us, and our October 15, 2016, dead-line for submitting changes to the Alpha Rho State Standing Rules has officially passed. However, our cur-rent Standing Rules were well up-dated two years ago, and the actions taken at International this summer did not affect any needed changes for Oregon.

Another idea for us to remember is that, as a Bylaws Committee, we are able to make “housekeeping” changes to the Standing Rules at any time. Therefore, if you have any suggestions for changes to the Standing Rules, please submit them to the committee for review. Your suggestions will always be consid-ered and appropriate action taken.

MUSICIANS, SINGERS, &

ENTERTAINERS!The Alpha Rho State (Oregon) Convention in 2017 needs your talents as a so-loist; member of a duo, trio, or quartet; or as part of the Alpha Rhosies choir.

Kelly McIntyre has identified a fine pianist to accompany the lyrics, but your skill is needed as a member of a choir, the Alpha Rhosies, or—and this is a new idea—for a solo, duo, trio, quartet, or such. If you are a soloist, it would

be wonderful to have a song for the banquet (Saturday evening) or the White Roses Ceremony (Sunday morning). Inter-ested? Ask your friends to join you, too. AWARDS INFO FOR 2017 CONVENTION RECOGNITION

WONDERFUL WOMEN OF ALPHA RHO There are wonderful women in your DKG chapter, right? Celebrate and share their accomplishments. Write a letter of nomination telling of your outstanding chapter member regarding service to education, service in the community, or service to Alpha Rho. Have your letter co-signed by your chapter President or Vice President and send it to our Awards Co-chairs (below). Tell us about your chapter’s wonderful women by March 15, 2017. Recipients of Service to Education, Service to Community, and Service to Alpha Rho will be announced at the state conference in Medford in April.

Priscilla Ing, Lambda/3, 2345 Warren St., Eugene, OR 97405, 541-342-6984,[email protected] Kathy Webster, Gamma/3, 1585 Balboa St., Eugene, OR 97408, 541-510-3131, [email protected]

DOES YOUR CHAPTER MEASURE UP? The following actions are reviewed by the receiving committees and persons and are then reported to the Awards Committee.

1. Will your chapter be one we can recognize on April 29, 2017? 2. Did you send in your chapter program booklet/yearbook AND chapter brochure to both Oregon President Dr. Cindy Ryan

and your District Coordinator by December 1? 3. Is someone completing state reports to be sent to President Cindy by February 1? Will copies of four chapter newsletters

Depending upon the size of your chapter and the number of new or reinstated members, your chapter may also earn the Order of the Rose. CALLING ALL CHAPTER PRESIDENTS AND TREASURERS!

Sisters, please do a favor for the Oregon state organization and International Headquarters. Take a few minutes at a chap-ter meeting to have members check their addresses, phones, and e-mails as listed on your chapter rosters. Next, contact anyone who was unable to attend the meeting to check their demographic listing.

Spend a moment or two to personally call your members who are on the Oregon “No E-Mail List.” Check their addresses for accuracy. The last two editions of The New Oregon Trail have had several “not at this address” returns, which costs money and wastes resources, AND—worst of all—our sisters don’t receive copies of state news and events.

• Are the correct people on your chapter’s “No E-Mail List” ?• Are their mailing addresses correct?• Are any of those on your list willing to change to a digital version of the Trail?• Have any of the sisters dropped their membership?• Are any of them in Chapter Eternal?

If there are changes, please notify Marie Mueller, State Editor, and Jill Snyder, State Administrative Secretary. Next, inform International Office of address/e-mail/phone/name changes. Go to www.dkg.org.

To change an address at International Headquarters is very easy for any member to do.• Open your favorite Internet browser.• Go to www.dkg.org• Select MyDKG on the top banner. Your name, DKG ID number, and more will appear. In the top center, it tells (and

shows) you to click the edit icon next to the part of your personal information that needs to be updated. • Once you are at that point, check your home address, your e-mail, and your phone(s), including your cell phone. After

you have updated and saved the information, it will automatically affect mailings from International to state and chapter sources.

• As a chapter officer, you can also send a group of changes for your chapter directly to [email protected]

Thank you for doing this promptly! ~~~ Marie and Jill

SPREAD THE WORDSusan Faller-Mitchell, SOU faculty member and an active member of Omega Chapter in Josephine and Jack-son Counties, reported on a new education program that she supervises. SOU is working to develop a satellite program at KIamath Falls this year, with the southern coastal areas (Coos Bay, Bandon, etc.) targeted for the next academic year. Each program is designed to be culturally responsive to a particular area and is specifically de-signed for that group of clientele. To accommodate the working participants, programs will be “hybrids”: online instruction with in-class live sessions on Saturdays.

The goal of the program is to help districts “grow” their own teachers, something that is desperately needed in the next few years. Susan attended an “Are you interested?” session in Klamath Falls, expecting a mere handful of prospective students. Fifty (yes, 50) attended, to her considerable surprise. There is both need and interest. Let your teaching friends throughout southern Oregon, including the Coast, know about Susan’s project. Susan may be contacted at [email protected] or through the SOU Department of Education at 541-552-6919.

CHAPTER CHATTER!

District 1Iota (Umatilla & Morrow Cos.): is making warm hats for area K-2 stu-dents, using an assemly line approach at chapter meetings.

District 2Alpha (Klamath & Lake Cos.): Our convention logo was designed by Bonita Fillmore of Alpha Chapter! Thanks,Bonita!

Omega (Josephine Co.): Omega has been and will be “traveling” this year. In November, Lisa Kramer described her experiences as a teacher in Taiwan. In December, Kelly Turner shared her study trip to Panama. At the November meeting we welcomed Aimee Keil, our New Teacher Grant recipient, who teaches Life Skills at Evergreen Elementary. She is a won-derful instructor and “has DKG written all over her,” one member said.December brought fun and sharing through donations to Toys for Tots and a Christmas ornament “auction” that produced beautiful ornaments, a number of “thefts,” and lots of smiles. During the day we signed cards for our absent members.

District 3Lambda (Lane Co.): Lambda is pleased to announce the December 3 birth of vice-president Nancy Schaal-McHarry’s (and her husband, Kelcy’s) daughter. Magnolia Elsie Mae McHarry was born at 2:56 a.m., weigh-ing 5 lbs., 8 oz. Our October meeting was held in conjunction with a baby shower for them. Guadalupe Jones graciously opened her home for the celebration. See photos, p. 11.

In addition to welcoming Maggie Mae, Lambda also initiated two members in December: Karren Timmermans

and Noriko Baldwin. Karren is an associate professor at Pacific Univer-sity, Eugene Campus. She received her PhD in 2008, in Early Childhood Literacy. Besides teaching students in the Department of Education, Karren presents professional development workshops and has published teacher resources. Her current personal project is as executive director of The Pilcrow Foundation, which provides books to rural libraries through a grant program. She will be presenting Lambda’s January program. Kar-ren lives in Cottage Grove and is a member of the Friends of the Cottage Grove Library as well as past Master Gardener.

Noriko is a licensed El/ECSE Spe-cialist, serving children with special needs. She is currently commuting from Eugene to Salem each day. She received her master’s degree from the University of Oregon and worked for Head Start of Lane County until her current job.

Just before Christmas, members do-nated for the purchase of sweat pants and sweatshirts for four classrooms (108 children) of Head Start of Lane County. This has been a chapter proj-ect for several years, in collaboration with Rotary.

District 5Alpha Epsilon (Salem & Polk Cos.): Early September was a sad time as we lost one of our founders. Alyce Yoshikai, a DKG member for

57 years, passed away on Septem-ber 6. She will be greatly missed by her chapter members and the whole community where she spent 39 years of service in the Salem-Keizer public school system and more years in ser-vice to the community.

September 22 was a happier time. We initiated four new, energetic members into our chapter (photo p. 12). For our October meeting we learned how im-portant “Laughter in the Workplace” is to help reduce stress. The smiles on our faces when the workshop was over showed that we laughed away the stresses for a while.

Alpha Nu (Hillsboro, Beaverton & Washington Co.): In October, repre-sentatives from the League of Women Voters discussed Oregon’s November ballot measures. Members learned about travel adventures with the Road Scholar program in November.

December featured an ornament gift exchange, and members gave gener-ously of homemade cookies, which were gifts for our working teachers, and gift cards, which were donated for Beaverton Schools’ homeless students. See photo next page >>

District 6Pi (Hood River & Sherman/Wasco/Wheeler Counties): Pi initiated three new members this fall. It’s exciting to see our chapter grow!

We started off our year with a Back-to-School salad and dessert dinner while planning our yearly meetings and pro-grams. Our members generously offer their homes for meetings and hostesses provide the food. In October we reviewed election measures to be bet-ter informed voters. November was a fun meeting with holiday card making after our initiation ceremony. Decem-ber featured our annual Christmas Brunch and Auction. Always fun to shop!

VISIT SPAIN & PORTUGAL

WITH DKG SISTERS

From Beverly Helms 2012-14 Int’l President

As the DKG Ambassador for the upcoming tour to Portugal and Spain, I’m inviting you to join us.

This is a project of the International Non-Dues Revenue Committee. DKG gets a certain amount from the Go Ahead Tour company for each person who signs up for the tour. So we want to try to get the maximum number on the tour in order to reap greater dividends for our organization. Of course, another important purpose is to provide a benefit to our members, friends and families with a discounted price and the opportunity to travel as a private group.

Read the information to the left, then make your reservations.

(I couldn’t make it read-able and have it upright, so it’s sideways.)

Sorry! Marie
