The Chin nationalfarmer is U San Mya, andhe is a Buddhist. Thelaterite road linking thetarred road and the largefarm was constructed byhis family.

The farmerexplained that he started

cultivation of perennialtrees in 1999, and that nowhe has grown 1,000 orangeplants, 300 djenkol beanplants, 300 banana plants, one acre of elephant footyam plants in addition toavocado, lime and jackfruit plants.

We witnessed lushand green paddyplantations along the slopeof the hill. In enquiring

about the plantations, thefarmer said that a total of25 acres of Shweyinayepaddy strain wascultivated applying theterrace farming systemthis year with the use ofwater from the spring ofthe hill in line with the

agriculture method ofTownship MyanmaAgriculture Service. Upto now, the farmersachieve success incultivation. He disclosedthat he planned to focuson cultivation of onlyShweyinaye paddy strainon two acres of land. Therefore, we learned thateven in the hilly region, food can be surplus thanks

to the results of diligenceand utmost efforts.

We asked thefarmer about sales of fruitsproduced from the farm.He said that the merchantsfrom Magway andSeikpyu buy orange anddjenkol bean yearly

through the piece-worksystem; that banana is sentto Seikpyu and Chauk; andthat vegetables and fruitare sold to the local peoplein the region.

After waving atfarmer U San Mya, weproceeded to Shwe-taungdan agriculture farmof farmer U Mya Moung.

At the entrance tothe farm, we saw bendingbranches of orange plantswith fruits. Moreover, there are a lot of thrivingorange, tea, pomelo, djenkol bean, lychee andelephant foot yam plantsin the farm.

Farmer U MyaMoung said, “Icommenced my task bygrowing orange plants in1995. Now, I have grown1200 orange plants. In1999, I cultivated teaplants, and now, I haveover 30,000 tea plants.”

At present, heproduces dried tea leaveson a manageable scale andsends the product to Saw,Seikpyu and Chauk ofMagway Division.

We witnessedthriving elephant foot yamplants. He said, “Elephantfoot yam plants were seennaturally in the region inthe past. Due to highdemand of foreigncountries, elephant foot

yam plants are beinggrown systematically. Outof three colours such aspink, white and yellow, the tuber with pink colourfetches good price. Thewet tuber of elephant footyam can be sold at K 400per viss and the wet onebetween K 3,000 and K4,000. Six viss of wet tubercan be dried in the sun toproduce one viss of driedtuber, according to farmerU Mya Moung.

The privatecompanies purchaseelephant foot yam tubersin Chin State to export itto China and Japan. Now,over 40 farmers areengaged in growingmarketable elephant footyam plants in Kanpetlet.Over 600 acres of land isput under elephant footyam plants in the wholestate. In 2009, a total of1500 acres of elephant foot

I think that thesown acreage ofelephant foot yam plantswill increase in ChinState, and that the localfarmers are going toenjoy the benefit inagriculture sector in thefuture.

8 THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Sunday, 26 July, 2009

When I heard that an election will be held in 2010,following the approval of the State constitution, I wasvery pleased with the hope that our country would soonbe transformed into a democratic one, as aspired by theentire people. It was also because of my interest in theconstitution I happened to read it several times. Then, Inoticed that the constitution is designed to help ourcountry avert same untold miseries the people suffered inthe past and turn to democracy. It stipulates appropriateprinciples the people should honour in the transitionalperiod before the multiparty practice is mature and thepeople have enough knowledge of democratic practice. So, I believe that the constitution is a manual to democ-ratization process and is intended to serve the interest ofthe nation and the people. Therefore, it inspired me to castthe ‘yes’ vote in the referendum, sharing the commonstance with the people.

The election will be held after the approval of theconstitution, so the goal of the nation is now within thetouching distance. Nothing can win the satisfaction of theentire people. So, the anti-government groups have torespect the wishes of the majority of the people, which isat the core of democracy. Almost all the people are infavour of the constitution and are looking forward to the2010 election, as evidenced by the result of ‘yes’ votesrepresenting 92.48 per cent of the total votes cast.

The constitution is designed to serve the interest ofthe nation and the people. However, certain self-seekers,who have realized that they will never have their wishesfulfilled, have not been able to distinguish between goodand bad, and are still sticking to their stereotyped policies.Their weak point is that they have not opened their eyesto witness the objective conditions, they do not knowsuitable way, they do not accept what is reasonable, anddo not want to do what should be done.

Supposing, a man wants to smoke, but he hasnothing in hand. If he is offered a match, he should acceptit. Again he is offered a cheroot, he should also accept it.Then, he can light the cheroot to smoke. And if circum-stance favours him, he can smoke a cigarette. If he had notaccepted the match, he would not have had his wish tosmoke fulfilled, even if he were offered a match. That isto say he should grab the chance when opportune. Andwhen there is another chance to him, his wishes will cometrue. So, I think they should grab the opportunities whileluck smiles on them in order to have their wishes granted.

They should not think of making the nation ademocratic one overnight, which is impossible. That is,indeed, ‘building a castle in the air’, and not a pragmaticapproach. Even democracies had to take steps one afteranother till they were democratically mature. It is impos-sible for a nation to get democratically mature whendemocratization process is in its infancy. If that countrypractises democracy fully in the transitional period, theirpractice of democracy will not last long, and will go badbefore long.

So, I would say democratization process calls forsound foundations as the saying that goes “Well begun, half done”. And if a nation copies democracy persist-ently, that will be followed by a variety of evil conse-

Remain constantly vigilant and alertKo Thayar

quences. Look, they are now resorting to all possible waysfor the sake of their interest. Transform the nation intodemocracy all of a sudden, and then the whole country willbe at their mercy. Moreover, the efforts made to achievesuccess in democratization process will all be fruitless. That is a point greatly worthy of public attention.

Now, they are active and persist in making de-mands. The problem broke out when Yettaw secretlyentered the compound of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s resi-dence. They did stir up the problem although they knewwhat would occur if they did so. Then, the government hadno choice but to file a lawsuit against the offenders. In thatcase, their acts were particularly intended to build up thesituation to a tragic climax. Only then would it be moreopportune for them to express their voices and to placemuch reliance on their masters. In reality, they want theirmasters to take action against the country through interna-tional organizations. Now, the situations have happened asthey planned. Now, they are making so many demandssuch as Daw Aung San Suu Kyi should not be put behindbars, action should not be taken against her, the govern-ment should release all the political prisoners uncondition-ally, arrange a dialogue, make amendments to the consti-tution, ensure that the forthcoming election will be a freeand fair one, the election will not be legal if it goes withouther participation. Furthermore, they are urging others tomake such unreasonable demands. What is their purposeof forcing the government to release her and helping herstand for election? That is as clear as crystal. She is suchkind of person who will dance to their tune. Only when shewins in the election, will it be possible for them to meddlein the affairs of our country, to dominate and intimidate theregional countries. In order to reach their goal, they areawarding and aiding the particular person and anti-govern-ment groups considerably. Therefore, I would like to urgethe people to be convinced of their real intention of doingso.

I do not think anti-government groups are relyingon right persons. They should think over to know whatsorts of persons they can rely on and what sorts of demandsthey should make. I would like to ask if they know the realattitude of their masters. One will be thoughtful andsensible only when one takes lessons from other’s mis-takes. I would like to ask if anti-government groups knowthe real attitude of their masters. Have a look at Iraq andAfghanistan, a large number of whose innocent peoplehave died and which are going through the hell. So far,In Iraq, nearly 700,000 people have died, over 1.2million have sustained serious injuries, 3 million havebecome homeless, and about 2 million have fled abroadas refugees.

There is hardly no day in which there is no bombblast and about 30 to 40 people die in Iraq since the US-ledinvasion of Iraq. Similarly, so far, Afghanistan has seenmore than 8000 civilian deaths, and more than 16,000injured people. These consequences are not all. The coun-tries both have been a very large number of houses, buildings, roads, bridges, schools, hospitals and economicbuildings leveled down. They are in no position to dreamof returning to normal. Who are to blame for that? If they

keep on placing reliance on those invaders and complywith their wishes, their acts will bring death and destruc-tion to the motherland. Take careful thoughts to rely ontheir masters.

The real purpose of the acts of internal andexternal destructive elements, anti-governmentgroups and certain powerful countries is that it willnot work if the nation sees peace and stability. Thenation must be coping with riots and unrests. And thenation must not enjoy development and must beimpoverished. It is because if Myanmar maintainspeace and stability and enjoys cumulative develop-ment, democratization process will prove successfulsoon. And the nation will continue to stand withsovereignty. Then, no country can manipulate in theinternal affairs of Myanmar.

That is why they hate to see Myanmar enjoynational unity, peace, development and prosperity andthey are trying to incite riots and imposing sanctionsagainst the nation. They deceive the people into taking tothe streets by bringing the situations to a climax of publicoutrage. If the nation sees wholesale mass demonstra-tions, they will do the same as they treat Iraq, giving lameexcuses of compliance with particular persons and groups, and showing complete disregard for the stances of inter-national community. If anti-government groups realizethe innate nature of their masters only when the nationfaces like Iraq, it is too late to save the mother countryfrom falling into the abyss of miseries. By then, the wholenation will have been devastated. Did the invaders securethe approval of any international organizations to attackIraq? Who are destroying the peaceful conditions of theworld? Who are to be held responsible for hundreds ofthousands of deaths. They are doing so as if they werelicensed. However, they are desperate to interfere in theaffairs of and invade a small country like Myanmar thatis trying to tackle with its internal issue. In fact, they arebullying small countries.

At an ASEAN meeting recently held on the PhuketBeach in Thailand, a reporter asked US Secretary of StateHilary Clinton whether Myanmar should be removedfrom ASEAN if Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was not to bereleased. Clinton replied that if she was not to be released,ASEAN itself should make an appropriate policy change. She also said there would be prospects of US investmentsin Myanmar if she was to be released. ASEAN nationsshould put more pressure on Myanmar to promote de-mocracy, she added. In reality, her remarks amounted tointerfering in the affairs of ASEAN. If ASEAN doeswhat the US Secretary of State has asked, it will comeunder control of the US. This means the US is trying tosound the ASEAN out and put it into its pocket.

It is not very strange for the US to try to influenceASEAN. Apart from ASEAN, it is even trying to influ-ence a bigger organization. But any responsible persondoes not try to stop its attempt. Why are those demandingaction against our country turning a blind eye to the USattempt and keeping silent? It is also trying to causedisunity in the region and trouble among the regionalnations. There is no ASEAN member country that posesa threat to the region. We are addressing our internalissues by ourselves. Cross-border problems that happensometimes are usually solved in a short time. No membercountry poses danger to the region. Who is posing dangernot only to the region but also to the whole world? It canbear witness to Iraq and Afghanistan. The US militarybases in Asia are indeed a threat to the region. Theyare threatening the regional security as well as theglobal security.

Considering all this, the present Tatmadaw gov-ernment, as it has promised, is marching towards the goalof democracy in a peaceful and secure way. They shouldconsider and recognize such a goodwill effort of thegovernment.

(See page 9)

Any attempt to oppose whatever the govern-ment does should be stopped. They should alsothink about what the government is doing for. Inreality, politics is simple, clean and delicate. However, some politicians think they must getwhat they want and attack if they do not get.

Remain constantly …(from page 8)

Any attempt to oppose whatever the governmentdoes should be stopped. They should also think about whatthe government is doing for. In reality, politics is simple, clean and delicate. However, some politicians think theymust get what they want and attack if they do not get. And itis tantamount to damaging the image of politics. To makematters worse, they are placing much reliance on aliens. Dothey not know the ulterior motive of the big countries inwhich they put their trust ? They should be aware of the factthat the intention of those countries is to do what they wantto do by helping form a puppet government and this is theirstrategy. Due to the acts of some stupid persons who areunaware of above points, they will have their bad historyand the country can be under alien domination again. We cannot miss our goal. Anyhow, we will surely achievedemocracy that has never been acquired before. But itmay not be full democracy. However, it will be democ-racy with much essence. The most important thing is toachieve democracy that is compatible with our owncountry and people. It is certain that our democracy willnot be the type of other countries whose behaviours andtraditions are different from ours. Our democracy is notimaginary but pragmatic and free from danger.

There is no such a thing that is not impossible toachieve if we consider the interests of the State and of thepeople. Please don’t bear jealousy and disturb others. Iremember what Dr Maung Maung said in 1988. When hetook office in the period of unrest and violence, he declared

that a multi-party democracy election would be held in threemonths. Why didn’t they follow the way if they really lovedthe country and wanted to see political change. But theydidn’t. Taking advantage of the unrest, some claimed thatthey were only legitimate prime minister while some de-manded formation of interim government. At last, theirconfrontational acts led to widespread anarchy pushing thenation on the brink of collapse. We should be aware of that.At that time, the master, taking advantage of the situation, was looking from the sea by folding his arms. If it had notbeen the help of the Tatmadaw, our country would have gotinto trouble earlier than Iraq. This is the point to be aware of.

Those who were inciting more unrest and violencedid not let their own children and relatives out. There weresome who even sent their children abroad for their safety. Asthey persuaded active young people with little knowledgeand experience to commit anarchic acts in order that theycame into power, the country was about to collapse with lackof peace and stability and the law and order. The people hadto live in fear.

The present government tried its best to change thedeteriorating situation into the one in which the State hasdeveloped with peace and stability. It can be witnessed. Wecannot say they are good for nothing. We had never achievedunprecedented peace and progress in our history before. TheState is still working to guarantee eternal peace and stabilityand to strengthen national unity. Unity, peace and stabilityand progress are foundations for democratization. Withlack of these, democracy cannot be achieved.

One of the ways to disturb unity is the federal policy. They are trying to revive the federal policy with the intention

of breaking up the nation. They are driving a wedge amongthe national people. Our country is small with less popula-tion. But there are more than 100 national races. The countrywould be divided if the federal policy was practiced. Therehas been a clear example of big countries that broke up. It isnecessary to be aware of the fact that the federal policy willlead to the breakup of the Union.

We already have a solution if we have thoroughanalysis of the past incidents, present situation and futureevents. Our concepts must be free from outside instiga-tion. They must be reliable and free from personal attach-ment and egoism. We must show goodwill attitude to-wards the State and the people. We must be straightfor-ward. There must be no prejudices. It is necessary toorganize the people in a correct way. Creating massprotests after making up a story should be avoided. To-day’s people do not want unrest and violence and instabil-ity. We cannot wait for democracy any longer. We want tolive in peace and stability. Now, those trying to delaynational progress, those trying to disrupt democracy goal, those wanting to go backward, those with personality cultand self-interest, those doing wrong, those putting muchreliance on aliens and those demanding unreasonablethings by ignoring the people’s desire should considerwhat should they do. It is time to stop what they should notdo and to do what they should do by distinguishing rightand wrong. If they do what can yield best interests, ourdesired democracy goal will be nearly reached. Don’t turnback only when nearly reaching the goal. Let’s continue tomarch together in unity.

WASHINGTON, 25July—Vietnam veteransexposed to Agent Orangemay be associated with anincreased risk of develop-ing Parkinson’s or heartdisease, US researcherssuggest.

A report from the Insti-tute of Medicine in Wash-ington said a finding of“limited or suggestiveevidence of an associa-tion” means the evidenceindicates there could be a

link between exposure toa chemical and increasedrisk for a particular healtheffect. However, conflict-ing results from studies, problems with how thestudies were conducted orother confounding factorslimit the certainty of theevidence.

Based on the prepon-derance of the evidence aswell as biologic data be-ginning to show how atype of dioxin — TCDD

— can cause this toxic ef-fect, the committee con-cluded the evidence sug-gests veterans exposed todefoliants contaminatedwith TCDD during thewar may face a higher riskfor developing ischemicheart disease, the reportsaid.

Ozone exposure badfor healthy young lungs

DAVIS, 25 July —Theelderly are warned toavoid outdoors duringhigh ozone levels butozone has a negative ef-fect on lung function inhealthy adults, US re-searchers said.

Researchers at the Uni-versity of California,Davis, recruited 31healthy non-smokingpeople to participate in6.6-hour sessions duringwhich they were exposedto ozone at 60, 70, 80 or87 parts per billion, or fil-tered air, while undergo-ing six 50-minute boutsof moderate exercise fol-lowed by 10-minutebreaks. A 35-minutelunch break separated thethird and fourth bouts ofexercise.

Lung function for eachsubject was assessed be-fore, during and after ex-posure, and each indi-vidual answered a ques-tionnaire evaluating sub-jective symptoms.

“The National AmbientAir Quality Standard forozone was recently re-vised to set lower limitsfor ozone concentrations. Our research indicatesthat the threshold for dec-rements in ozone-inducedlung function in healthyyoung subjects is belowthis standard,” EdwardSchelegle said in a state-ment. “Specifically, wefound that 6.6 hours expo-sure to mean ozone con-centrations as low as 70parts per billion have asignificant negative effecton lung function, eventhough the currentNAAQS standards allowozone concentrations tobe up to 75 parts per bil-lion over an eight-hourperiod.”

The products do notcontain any health warn-ings comparable to FDA-

approved nicotine replace-ment products or conven-tional cigarettes. They areavailable in flavors such aschocolate and mint, whichmay appeal to young peo-ple.

Dr Margaret A Ham-burg, commissioner offood and drugs, said theproducts have not beensubmitted to the FDA forevaluation or approval andthe agency has no way ofknowing, except for thelimited testing it has per-formed, the levels of nico-tine or the amounts orkinds of other chemicalsthat the various brands ofthese products deliver tothe user.—Internet
