The New GEC Curriculum & The GEC Teacher
• Why the New General Education Curriculum?
• How does it continue the K to 12 curriculum?
• How do we know that students are ready?
• How do we do an Outcomes-Based Syllabus?
• What are the core subjects?
• What can we offer as electives?
• How can we prepare to be a GEC teacher?
Why change GE (external)
No longer multiple-choice world, needfor “big-picture thinking”*
Explosion of knowledge
New globalized, technology-drivenorder
More complex, widespread problems

Objectives are specific intentions that indicate the steps to be taken to achieve our aims or goals as teachers. We can explain here the rationale for offering this course.
CILOs are statements of what students are expected to be able to do as a result of studying this course. They are expressed from the students’ perspective and in the form of action verbs leading to observable and assessable behaviour.
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
TLA: This section is supposed to show (i) how the teacher intends to achieve the CILOs, through what kinds of learning activities, and (ii) how these T&L activities align with the CILOs.
Students will search an electronic English corpus for relevant data on particular grammatical constructions.
AMs: It is not sufficient to say ‘assignments, tests, final exam’. We need to furnish more concrete details about the nature of the assessments. AMs should be aligned with the appropriate CILOs.
The examination will test the students’ ability to identify and explain grammatical errors in a given text.

The general education curriculum we have designed aims at four overarching goals in linking the college experience to the world its graduates will confront. These goals are, in many respects, overlapping, and they are not tied to specific disciplines or departments.
General education courses should strive to create a learning environment in which the relationship between teachers and students, and between students and students, is interactive.
• General education prepares students for civic engagement. Civic engagement means participation in public life.
• General education teaches students to understand themselves as products of – and participants in – traditions of art, ideas, and values.
• General education prepares students to respond critically and constructively to change.
• General education develops students’ understanding of the ethical dimensions of what they say and do.
