The year ahead is set to be an exciting one for Peugeot, with a range of new launches and an ongoing focus on offering businesses choice, desirability and low running costs. And at the heart of this is Motion & Emotion – the underlying philosophy that runs through everything that Peugeot does. Where innovative technology and a passion for driving come together seamlessly in motion. But choosing a Peugeot is more than a practical decision. It is driven by emotion, evoked by the unique experience of driving a Peugeot vehicle. This passion shines through in our award-winning range, nowhere more so than in the exciting new product launches for 2012.

The new 208, launching in spring, combines a no-compromise ergonomic design, with CO2 emissions from 87g/km, making the business of driving a genuine pleasure. In other new launches, Peugeot’s world first diesel hybrid technology, as seen in the 3008 Diesel Hybrid4, is set to roll out across the 508 rXH Hybrid4 and 508 Diesel Hybrid4 Saloon, bringing with it increased driver choice, lower CO2 emissions and improved fuel consumption for fleet drivers.

“The moment I saw it, I said ‘the car is a winner’. It reminded me of a sporting 206. The overall quality has really stepped up and will be a really good addition to the line-up.”

When choosing a new vehicle, the decisions that need to be taken can be tough ones – price vs. performance; space vs. style.

But choosing the right car for your business needs shouldn’t have to involve compromises. And this philosophy was at the heart of the development on Peugeot’s new 208 – a car where you can have it all.

Available to order in April 2012, the new 208 delivers a uniquely intuitive and pleasurable driving experience, featuring the latest generation engine technology and improved environmental and economy benefits, all built on the success of iconic models such as the 205, 206 and 207, but with renewed levels of style and sophistication.

WHERE BUSINESS MEETS PLEASUREAn impressively ergonomic new interior design is combined with a lighter, more compact frame, with agility and efficiency at its heart. With fuel consumption up to 83.1mpg and CO2 emissions from 87g/km (for the diesel range) – an average of 34g/km lower than the 207 – the new 208 qualifies for lower road tax and those models with CO2 emissions below 100g/km are exempt from the London Congestion Charge, making perfect business sense.

Shorter, marginally lower and up to 173kg lighter than the 207, the 208 features a sleek new design. Yet despite savings in weight and bulk, optimising the performance of the car, there is an increased amount

of occupant space, adding to the growing opinion that this is a real landmark in Peugeot design.

The new 208 will be available in two distinct body styles, the three and five-door. And the three-door has a significantly different look to the five-door, with the style of the rear quarter panel recalling its illustrious older siblings, the 205 and the 206.

STYLISH INSIDE AND OUTThe interior of the new 208 sees a re-organisation of the dashboard and instrumentation, with the driver’s immediate environment designed to be intuitive and clear.

Featuring an ergonomically designed smaller steering wheel and instrument panel, plus large touch screen providing information at a glance, the new 208 puts the driver at the heart of the car’s performance.

Due to be launched in 2012, the new 208 looks set to make the business of driving a genuine pleasure.

What the experts say

“On first impressions, it is very good quality; the cabin is a nice place to be. As cars have grown over the years, it is really nice to see one that has shrunk in size. Although you get more room inside, it is a more compact car.”

“It is everything you are looking for in this sector of the market; great seating position in the car and nice small steering wheel, which gives you an even more significant feel of manoeuvrability.”

mark Jowsey kWIkCARCOST

“The quality is very good and the finishing of the car looks excellent. It’s a giant leap forward from the 207; it certainly will be a winner.”

2011 was a successful year for Peugeot. The 508 was crowned ‘Best New Car of 2011’ in the Fleet World honours, and has been widely hailed in the national media as ‘Peugeot’s best saloon yet’. Peugeot’s 3008 Diesel HYbrid4 gained its second award. Following on from the coveted Diesel Car magazine ‘Best Eco Car of the Year 2011’ honour, it went on to be awarded a 2011 What Car? ‘Green Car Award’ for the SUV category.

Chas Hallett, Editor-in-Chief of What Car? said: “The world’s first production diesel hybrid is the best hybrid the What Car? team has driven. The joint power sources work together seamlessly and emit only 99g/km of CO2. This means the car is exempt from both road tax and the London Congestion Charge. We can see a waiting list for this Peugeot growing very fast.”

Elsewhere, the RCZ was named Diesel Car magazine’s

‘Sports Car of the Year’ for the second year in a row. And Peugeot’s Bipper van, as outlined in the news story above, was awarded ‘City Van of The Year 2011’ at the Fleet Van Awards. “The Bipper was the clear overall winner,” commented Trevor Gelken, editor of Fleet Van, “assisted by the prominence of Peugeot’s renewed focus on fleet support and aftersales.”

These latest awards round off an impressive 18 months for

Peugeot in the UK which has led to over a dozen major awards from the industry’s media, including Fleet News ‘Green Fleet Manufacturer of the Year 2011’.

The start of the 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship is only a few short weeks away. The championship, which replaces the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC), begins in the US with the 12 Hours of Sebring on 17 March, before the 1,000km of Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium on 5 May and the world-famous 24 Hours of Le Mans over the weekend of 16-17 June.

Team Peugeot will be hoping to follow up its triumph in the 2011 Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, in which it won six races out of seven to secure a second ILMC title in addition to a second ILMC Manufacturers’ title.

In the concluding race at Zhuhai, China, Anthony Davidson and Sébastien Bourdais claimed victory ahead of Franck Montagny and Stéphane Sarrazin after a close race in which the Peugeot 908s once again combined performance, reliability and endurance.

Here’s hoping for another successful season for Peugeot in 2012.

The Association of Scottish Motoring Writers have voted Peugeot’s iOn as the winner of the first Electric Car of the Year.

John Murdoch, Chairman of the Association, said: “The Electric Car category may be a new one for 2011, but there were no shortage of contenders for the title.

“The iOn’s ease of use, realistic battery range and affordability ensured it stood out.

It was, however, its drive that stands comparison with any petrol diesel-powered car in its class that flicked all our switches.”

Picking up the award, Alan Nicholson, Peugeot Small Vehicles Manager, said: “It is positive news to hear that the Peugeot iOn is a deserving winner in Scotland. As a modern electric vehicle, we think it is an ideal choice for urban journeys.”

And don’t just take the journalists’ words for it. During Peugeot’s Van Fortnight event in 2010, Marc Saunders won a year’s free rental of a Bipper van. He’s been so impressed with the vehicle that he bought it outright in January when his rental period ended.

“The Bipper’s been great to drive and it’s very economical. The higher driving position means you get a better view of the road and traffic ahead, too,” Marc said.

“It’s been great in everyday use for helping family and friends who might need to transport things around and, all in all, I’ve really enjoyed driving the van, which is why I’m looking to buy it!”

NEWS

Already an established and popular choice with prominent businesses and companies up and down the country, the Bipper impressed judges with its compact proportions, frugal HDi diesel engines and transmissions (with manual, EgC and Stop & Start systems available), a payload of up to 660kg and a load volume of 2.5m3. However, a key factor in winning the accolade was the Bipper’s durability and the quality of Peugeot’s fleet sales and support service.

Trevor gelken, editor of Fleet Van, said: “The Bipper was a clear overall winner, assisted by the prominence of Peugeot’s renewed focus on fleet support and aftersales.”

Phil Robson, Peugeot Fleet Director, said: “The Bipper is a terrific light commercial van and thoroughly deserves to be the Fleet Van ‘City Van of the Year’ for 2011. Winning this

prestigious award is yet another demonstration of the importance we place in product excellence with good customer support and aftersales service support.”

eugeot has a strong heritage when it comes to the development of new technologies, including the new 3008 Diesel HYbrid4,

508 Diesel HYbrid4 Saloon and the 508 RXH HYbrid4 based on the 508 SW silhouette. Over the years, its vehicles have pioneered pneumatic tyres, electric

ignition and pinion steering. In 1912, Peugeot produced the world’s first car with twin overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. In 1931, Peugeot’s 201 became the first car to be fitted with independent front suspension as standard. And not forgetting Peugeot’s VLV electric car, which was ultra lightweight, neatly packaged and ahead of its time when it appeared in 1941.

Peugeot’s technology continues to be just as ground-breaking today, with its world first full diesel hybrid system. This technology combines a diesel engine with an electric motor and is due to be showcased in some of the brand’s new models in 2012, including the new 3008 Diesel HYbrid4, 508 Diesel HYbrid4 Saloon and the 508 RXH HYbrid4, based on the 508 SW.

With full personal lives, as well as business lives, they’ve been thinking about changing their saloon car for something more economical and versatile. they leapt at the chance to try out the new 3008 diesel hybrid4 for a few weeks to see just what this new crossover had to offer.

The great thing about this new hybrid technology from Peugeot is that it offers business drivers CO2 emissions from 99g/km and a 15% reduction in fuel consumption, without any loss of driving dynamics. Instead, Peugeot’s HYbrid4 technology enhances the car’s refined and dynamic nature and offers drivers the choice of four different driving modes – including Four-wheel drive and 100% Electric mode.

The 3008 Diesel HYbrid4 is not only the world’s first full diesel hybrid vehicle and the first Peugeot model to feature this exciting technology, but also the only crossover that offers performance, refinement and 4x4 capability in hybrid guise. It truly is a car without compromise

award-winning technologyThe 3008 Diesel HYbrid4 not only shares all of the credentials of the award-winning 3008 Crossover, but has also been winning its own awards. Following on from the Diesel Car Magazine, ‘Best Eco Car of the Year 2011’ honour, it’s now been awarded a 2011 What Car? ‘Green Car Award’ for the SUV category.

Fleet caught up with Colin and Threasa Stratton and their family, who have been testing the 3008 Diesel HYbrid4 for the last three weeks.

Both Threasa and Colin have busy careers in law. And with two young children to look after, their free time is equally as hectic.

“I was eager to put the 3008 Diesel HYbrid4 through its paces,” says Colin. “It’s essential that the car revolves around my busy lifestyle and serves me tirelessly for both work and leisure purposes. We both

work in the city but like to spend time in the countryside, so need a car that can perform in both environments.

“My business has offices in Swindon, Bath and London, so having a vehicle that can perform on the motorway, while being economical with fuel, is very important.”

And the 3008 Diesel HYbrid4 will not disappoint. The combination of the fuel efficient 2.0 litre 163bhp HDi diesel engine and 37bhp electric motor means that this clever hybrid has a maximum power output of 200bhp.

Unlike previous hybrid vehicles, which have chosen to use a less fuel-efficient petrol engine, the Peugeot 3008 Diesel HYbrid4’s engine provides a combined cycle fuel consumption up to 74.4mpg and CO2 emissions from 99g/km, without sacrificing power or driving enjoyment. This also enables

the 100% electric (ZeV) mode enables the 3008 diesel hybrid4 to travel for about two and a half miles before the engine automatically takes over and recharges the battery, allowing continual use of the ZeV mode.

the 3008 diesel hybrid4 (104g/km version only) features a head-up display, which beams driver information directly on to the windscreen in the line of sight.

the 3008 diesel hybrid4 can operate in four different driving modes – Four-wheel drive, auto, sport and 100% electric mode. the ng4 sat nav option (as shown) is available on the 104g model and as an option on the 99g model.

due to its multiflex interior and clever integration of the battery and the innovative rear suspension, the Peugeot 3008 diesel hybrid4 can also be transformed to offer a considerable load capacity. a 2.0 litre 163bhp hdi diesel powerplant drives

the front wheels, while a 37bhp electric motor drives the rear – delivering 200bhp and a 15% reduction in fuel consumption.

the HYbrid4 to qualify for the lowest rate of road tax – the 3008 Diesel HYbrid4 is in the lowest BIK tax band and is exempt from the 3% diesel surcharge, making it a sound choice for any business fleet.

“I really liked having the choice of four driving modes and being able to choose whether to travel in Sport, Auto, Four-wheel drive or 100% Electric, depending on how I needed the car to perform,” says Colin.

“The electric mode was perfect for my commute to work, which is only three or four miles down the road, into the city centre. The silence of the electric motor was unusual at first, but it did make my journey into the office a serene way to start the day.”

“The electric mode, when running by itself, is effortless and smooth. Then when the engine does kick in, it’s brilliant.”

drive capability so that you can feel safer in the snow and ice. As a family with young children, safety is paramount to us and the 3008 Diesel HYbrid4 offers us peace of mind.”

Due to its multiflex interior and clever integration of the battery and the innovative rear suspension, the Peugeot 3008 Diesel HYbrid4 can also be transformed to offer a considerable load capacity. From the boot, a rear seat folding system allows the seats in the second row to be folded quickly and automatically. Combined with the folding

front passenger seat, the 3008 Diesel HYbrid4 offers a flat floor, making it easy to load.

“We tend to need a lot of space for luggage and the adaptable interior was a real benefit,” says Threasa.

“When you consider its impressive fuel economy, flexible interior and the added safety of four-wheel drive capability, the 3008 Diesel HYbrid4 would make a great business and family car for us, offering versatility without costing the earth – economically or environmentally.”

making life simpleIn Auto mode the entire system is automatically controlled, including operation of the HDi diesel engine and the electric motor. And this provides optimal driving for fuel consumption and dynamic performance.

Changeover from the HDi diesel engine to the electric motor occurs automatically and seamlessly, due to a Stop and Start system, which places the HDi diesel engine in standby and restarts it as and when conditions require. In fact, the 3008 Diesel HYbrid4 can be driven for up to 977 miles on one full tank of fuel.

“From a business angle, the great fuel economy of this vehicle is very appealing, especially considering its low emissions figures, meaning lower tax,” says Colin. “However, performance is important, too. I enjoy driving and wouldn’t be happy in anything that’s not responsive.

“I’ve never tried a hybrid car before, but the 3008 Diesel HYbrid4 impressed me. Its combined output of 200bhp is more than what my current saloon has.”

When driving in Sport mode, the car favours quicker gear changes at higher engine speeds, coupling the diesel engine with the electric motor for more dynamic performance. This is optimally distributed and transmitted to the road by the four-wheel drive for top quality driving dynamics that aim to appeal to those who enjoy driving – like Colin.

In the four-wheel-drive setting the rear wheels are driven by the electric motor and the front wheels by the HDi diesel engine. Environmental-friendliness, performance and four-wheel drive are now no longer contradicting terms.

“In our previous car we did get stuck in the snow doing the school-run last year,” says Threasa, “and the way the winters have been going lately, it’s nice to have a car with four-wheel

diesel hybrid technology

Following on from the success of the 3008 diesel hybrid4, Peugeot’s innovative diesel hybrid technology is being rolled out into the 508 rXh, which is based on the award-winning 508 sW silhouette.

as with the 3008 diesel hybrid4, the 508 rXh has been designed to adapt to a wide spectrum of conditions and offers great fuel economy as well as fantastic driving dynamics.

it is powered by a combination of a 163bhp 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine and a 37bhp electric motor producing a total output of 200bhp. Featuring four-wheel-drive and a 100% electric driving mode, the 508 rXh has co2 emissions from 107g/km and fuel consumption up to 68.9mpg in the combined cycle. it also boasts a luxurious specification, including half leather trim, panoramic glass roof and latest generation audio and satellite navigation.

the 508 rXh and 3008 diesel hybrid4 are just the beginning of the hybrid4 story and the Peugeot 508 diesel hybrid4 saloon is next in line to take on Peugeot’s innovative diesel hybrid technology. this stylish, executive model will feature co2 emissions from 95g/km and fuel consumption up to 78mpg in the combined cycle.

300 units of the 508 rXh limited edition special series were exclusively available since 13 september 2011 and were snapped up in just 3 days. and the 508 rXh and 508 diesel hybrid4 saloon are available to pre-order from the beginning of February.

in auto mode the entire system is automatically controlled, including operation of the hdi diesel engine and the electric motor.

Perfect for low speeds around town, the car can travel for about two miles in this 100% electric mode before the engine takes over and recharges the battery, alllowing continual use of the 100% electric (ZeV) mode.

in the Four-wheel drive setting the rear wheels are driven by the electric motor and the front wheels by the hdi diesel engine.

sport mode favours quicker gear changes at higher engine speeds, coupling the diesel engine with the electric motor for dynamic performance.

the 508 diesel hybrid4 saloon features a stylish interior, with half leather trim and dark tinted side windows.

With advanced in-car technology – including Peugeot’s sos connect & assistance, providing instant access to a specially trained call centre who can advise and provide emergency assistance in the event of an accident – the 508 diesel hybrid4 saloon delivers the high standards that are expected by executives, both in terms of interior and exterior styling, as well as diesel hybrid technology.

BEING SEEN TO BE GREEN

recycled materials may have been popular in recent years, nowadays people are predominantly driven by the need to save money on their bills and are happy to recycle materials where they can.

She claims innovation is booming in this particular area, something that has enabled Green Stamp to add a number of ingenious gadgets to its line-up in the last few months. Its most popular buys include The Log Maker, a low-cost product that can produce fuel from wet or dry household waste and garden waste – such as leaves, twigs, nut casings and used tea bags.

Other top sellers, according to Brewer, include Radflek Radiator Reflector Panels, said to reflect 95% of the heat from the wall-side of a radiator back into the room; while the

Aladdin Radiator Valve continually bleeds any troublesome radiators to ensure maximum fuel efficiency. Power saving is now a reality too, with products like the Mobile Phone Standby Saver, cutting off the power supply to a mobile phone charger as soon as the task is complete. Brewer adds that inexpensive fuel-saving devices are proving equally popular with both councils and individuals, all looking to better furnish housing with fuel-efficient and eco-friendly products.

to encourage children to learn about their environment and the measures needed to preserve it. Green Schools Revolution is the organisation’s biggest community education programme to date – with some 2,500 schools signed up already. The scheme will include field trips, educational visits and other school- and home-based eco activities.

“I think it’s really important for kids to get involved with green issues because it helps

them see the world for what it is: which is a globe with just the amount of resources we need to keep ourselves alive,” said farmer and television presenter Jimmy Doherty, who

officially launched Green Schools Revolution on 20 September 2011. “There are no more resources being added, so we need to look after what we have.”

it’s not just the motoring world that’s seeing a surge in new technology. innovations in businesses and homes are also steering us towards an increasingly eco-friendly lifestyle

t’s been clear for some time now that greener living is no longer a lifestyle

choice, but a necessity. The need to be more eco-friendly is now interwoven

into government, business and education agendas. And technological advancement is at the forefront of this change, continuing to challenge innovators.

Recycling has become the norm for most householders and many businesses. However, despite better machinery to sort refuse, a good deal of waste continues to make its way into Britain’s ever-dwindling landfill sites – creating an unsustainable situation. According to the latest figures from the Environment Agency, if current waste levels continue, the UK will hit maximum capacity in just eight years.

One large-scale project currently in development promises to have a serious impact. Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is a biodegradable solution being driven by the government-backed Waste & Resources Action Programme. A truly forward-thinking process, AD involves breaking down biodegradable material, household food waste, farmyard manures and energy crops to produce renewable energy.

Some bottle…Meanwhile, Suffolk-based inventor Martin Myerscough could well be paving the way to a brighter future with his Green Bottle – a papier-mâché milk container (featuring a plastic insert) which was immediately snapped up by supermarket chain Asda. Green Bottle has now announced plans to go global with its innovative packaging concept.

This type of consumer-focused environmental product is typical of the way green innovations are now filtering through to the individual, with products specifically designed to be more convenient to use and inexpensive to adopt, effectively eradicating any arguments for not being more eco-friendly.

The perception that greener living requires a grand gesture couldn’t be further from the truth, says Emma Brewer, founder of Green Stamp, a company that offers a range of eco-friendly products for homes and offices. She explains that while products made from

Many smaller firms, such as Cardiff-based Green Light Products, are also being encouraged to innovate with shared research and funding. As part of a Technology Strategy Board co-funded R&D project (www.innovateuk.org), Green Light led a consortium of industrial and academic partners to make packaging foam (right) from renewable natural materials such as starch, biopolymer and natural fibres that can be used for hot or cold food storage.

his year has seen the successful launch of the Peugeot

508 in Europe. But this is just the start – it’s also being launched in China,

another major global market. Each year, Peugeot expects to sell a third of the total global allocation of 508s in this burgeoning market as part of its partnership with Dongfeng, whose Peugeot Dealer network comprises 220 points of sale across 182 Chinese cities. This calculates as 65,000 units in this country alone.

The world’s largest maker and seller of cars, the figures for the Chinese market astound: 13.76 million passenger cars were delivered in 2010, which represented a staggering growth of 32% over the year before. In 2011, things were not looking quite so buoyant, with economic and taxation issues in the country paring back growth to a still-respectable figure of between 3% and 5%. But for any car manufacturer with expectations to grow and develop new models on a global scale, China is a vital market.

And Peugeot has had a strong presence in the country for many years, thanks to its 50:50 partnership with Dongfeng, making models including the 408, 307 and 207. Further joint ventures with firms such as Chang’an Automobile are in the pipeline too.

The strategy of working on joint ventures with the region’s businesses is working well for the firm, with almost 81,000 vehicles sold in

T

the first half of 2011, powered by the success of the 408, a mid-size saloon launched last year. Peugeot’s growth was double that of its competitive sector at 17%.

Moving forward, Peugeot plans to launch at least one new model per year in China, reinforcing its presence. At the Auto Shanghai 2011, the firm introduced the Peugeot 508 to the Chinese market and showcased a new cutting edge concept car, the SxC. 100%

designed in China, the SxC is a stunning crossover model using hybrid technology, combining a combustion engine at the front and an electric motor at the rear.

The SxC illustrates that although the Chinese market is well known for being heavily biased towards four door saloons, tastes are changing as buyers become more sophisticated. And as a result, convertibles and crossovers such as the 308 CC, 308 SW,

3008, and very soon the Peugeot RCZ, are now on sale in the country.

Peugeot’s sales objective in China for 2011 was to sell 200,000 vehicles. Essential to competitiveness is more production capability, so in 2013, a third plant will open at the company’s site in Wuhan, raising total annual capacity to 750,000 vehicles by 2015, as part of PSA Group’s plan to invest €1.3 billion over the next five years.

Understanding and manufacturing in the Chinese market is a key element of a successful presence in the region. That means establishing many of the same processes and behaviours as in mature markets, such as Europe. As far back as 2008, Peugeot understood this, opening the China Tech Centre (CTC) in Shanghai. This R&D/styling centre, which employs around 1,000 engineers and stylists, enables the PSA Group to respond more effectively to the specific requirements of Chinese customers.

One of the goals of the CTC is to sharply reduce vehicles’ carbon emissions in China to approximately 95 grams by 2020, in line with targets set for Europe. The PSA group has committed to totally renewing its engine line-up over the next five years, with six new engines, as well as the introduction of Stop and Start technology, leading on to the roll-out of full hybrid vehicles.

Car manufacturers have a corporate social responsibility to their customers and the environment in which it operates. The explosion in the number of vehicles in China brings road safety risks – and that’s why the firm has been running a ‘Road Safety Caravan’ for a number of years. They feature ‘Multimedia’ and ‘Parent’ workshops to promote road safety to children and parents,

including the use of child safety seats, plus how to keep children safe on the roads.

Currently, more than 10,000 children, 600 teachers and 2,000 parents have taken part, in 66 infant schools in 11 Chinese cities. In addition, 60,000 manuals have been sent to schools to raise awareness of road safety.

It’s a holistic approach of models designed for local tastes, built in the country, backed up by long-term investment, with responsibility to the environment and safety. All this underpins Peugeot’s efforts in China – and the marque’s goal to become the leading global automotive brand.

Understanding and manUfactUring in the chinese market is a key element of a sUccessfUl presence in the region

“China is such a dynamic market with room for growth, we’ve rapidly expanded and improved our product range, working to market Peugeot as a premium brand here. And it’s definitely working. Last year our Dealer network grew by over 25% to 285.

“But we’re not resting on our laurels, and have set ourselves tough targets for 2012, growing the number of Dealers by a third and establishing a 1.93% market share in a total market of 12.7million cars (currently 1.43%). The rapid expansion in the retail market hasn’t yet been reflected in business fleets, where the market actually fell by 1.6% in the second quarter of 2011 to 327,698 units. During this period, the growth areas were in locally produced cars, which witnessed a rise of 7%, while import car sales decreased by 2.6%.

“Chinese customers’ purchasing decisions are governed by a number of factors, primarily exterior styling, equipment and price. We expect the 508 will become a great support for our existing business fleet range after it was launched in July last year, which proved to be a great introduction for Peugeot into the M2 Segment in China.”

eugeot’s expanding line-up of cars and vans provides an increasingly compelling proposition for fleets looking to

manage their costs. This has been made possible by advances in build quality, a wide range of cutting-edge engines offering increased fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions, all of which is supported by dependable resale values.

Peugeot is able to offer fleets a one-stop shop for a range of vehicles, from the 3008 Crossover, winner of ‘Best Crossover’ at the What Car? Car of the Year 2011 Awards, to the stylish executive 508 and Peugeot’s award-winning range of light commercial vehicles. With an eye on new technologies, the 3008 Diesel HYbrid4 is leading the way as the world’s first full diesel hybrid, while the 100% electric iOn is a truly groundbreaking plug-in electric car. Meanwhile, the new 208 – available to order from Spring 2012 – perfectly showcases Peugeot’s emotive qualities, regenerating an iconic brand style for the here and now.

Lowering running costs, reducing emissions and new diesel technology will increasingly inform fleet decision making this year, according to Jeff Paterson, Chief Car Editor of Glass’s Guide, the influential independent guide to residual values.

P

When it comes to choice, desirability and loW running costs, Peugeot’s fleet ProPosition has never been stronger, as Curtis HutCHinson, editor of motor trader, discovers...

the course of their tenure. He believes macro-economic factors, such as the Consumer Price Index (CPI), also need to be taken into consideration.

“These costs need to be forecast over a specified period of time and at a specified mileage. In a simplified way, it could be that a fleet manager takes the forecast values from Glass’s Guide or Cap and then applies either CPI increases for the future period or bases the forecast on recent trends and other intelligence. For example, it is expected that the cost of fuel and insurance will increase by more than the CPI over the next three years,” he says.

ENVIRONMENTAL FOCUS With an eye on future trends, Glass’s Guide expects to see increased demand for ultra-green new cars, such as Peugeot’s wide range of popular sub-120g/km cars, which are exempt from road tax during their first 12 months, while superminis will continue to be sought after by used buyers. This is particularly welcome news ahead of the debut of the new Peugeot 208.

“We’ve been seeing a move towards eco-badged cars. Buyers are certainly more conscious of CO2 output and how that affects not only the environment, but also their own motoring expenditure. We expect sales of these cars to increase as families look to reduce costs.”

Long term thinking

Paterson is also encouraged by new hybrid diesel technology, which he believes will become popular options for businesses.

“Although new technology can often take some time for buyers to accept, as it needs time to prove itself, the diesel hybrid is likely to attract strong demand from the fleet sector from launch.

“There remains a growing number of buyers who are becoming more conscious about CO2 and running costs, and this technology will provide an appealing choice to those looking to reduce their motoring expenditure,” he says.

Paterson’s view on the critical role now played by a vehicle’s CO2 emissions is borne out by many fleet managers.

“The main challenge for 2012 will be CO2, without a shadow of a doubt. The benchmark used to be sub-120g/km and now it is sub-100g/km,” says Michael Donovan, Group Fleet Manager of Bowmer & Kirkland, one of the UK’s largest privately owned construction, engineering, development and communication groups.

A similar view is expressed by Peter Butler, Relationship Director of Lombard, the asset finance and commercial leasing group. “The key buying decision at the moment is emissions on vehicles, the Government is certainly driving people to those kind of decision- making processes,” he says.

Jim Humphreys, Sales Manager of Fleet Financial, the company car funding and management specialist, believes driving down both tail-pipe emissions and running costs will dictate fleet choices in 2012, and that Peugeot has powerful solutions for both.

“The issues are going to be CO2 and whole life costs, and that’s been demonstrated very clearly by Peugeot with its diesel hybrid technology, through reducing CO2 and increasing efficiencies by miles per gallon.”

For fleets it clearly pays to think green and consider the whole life costs of vehicles. The alternative is no longer an option.

“the main challenge for 2012 Will be co2 emissions, Without a shadoW of a doubt. the benchmarK used to be sub-120g/km and noW it is sub-100g/km”

According to Paterson a key element of a vehicle’s running costs is its resale value; an area Peugeot has successfully improved in recent years. “Depreciation is by far the biggest element of whole life costs, accounting for over 50%,” he says.

MACRO-ECONOMIC IMPACTGlass’s Guide calculates resale values by analysing buying and selling trends. “In order to accurately reflect market values, our team of editors spend their time liaising with dealers, traders, manufacturers and fleet companies in order to determine sales levels together with trade sentiment.

“We discuss trends and current values, and where they are likely to head the following month. We augment this anecdotal data with disposal data, which we receive from auctions, dealers, fleet and leasing companies and manufacturers. We then trend analyse the data looking for changes or patterns and will use this to assist us when setting the values.”

Paterson has long been an advocate of whole life costs as a measure of how much a business can expect to pay for vehicles over

The perfecT parTnernorthgate, europe’s largest Light commercial Vehicle (LcV) fleet provider, has deemed the peugeot partner as one of the most reliable small vans on its fleet according to their operational statistics.

northgate is the leading commercial vehicle hire company, and peugeot’s partner van makes up more than 90% of the 7,800 peugeot vehicles within northgate’s colossal 60,000-plus fleet.

“The peugeot partner is arguably the best kept secret in the LcV sector,” says John fleet, northgate’s UK asset Director. “Quite simply, it never goes wrong. I can’t remember a time when the new partner has proved problematic, let us down, or had to visit a workshop for anything other than a routine service.”

These sentiments are echoed by northgate’s UK engineering Manager, Gary Dean: “Our data shows peugeot – specifically the partner – as having the lowest number of defects, per percentage, of any marque within

Peugeot’s 508 embodies refinement, cutting-edge technology and sleek design. To test its long-term reliability and quality, Fleet News took the 1.6 HDi 508 on an extended test drive from Paris to Coventry. The car had previously undergone PSA’s arduous testing regime and had done the equivalent of 56,000 miles, during which it was put through its paces.

The used 508 was then collected from Paris and driven around 400 miles back to Peugeot’s UK HQ in Coventry by Simon Harris of Fleet News.

“My route back was dominated by motorway,” reports Simon, “but there were enough occasions in traffic to get a feel for the car as it coped with stop-start driving. Plus enough miles on poorly

surfaced roads to expose any loose or rattling fittings. But there were none.

“In fact, the only evidence of the car’s prolonged and intensive use was a smoothness in the leather on the steering wheel at 10-to-two, but it was a smoothness matched by the 508’s 1.6-litre diesel engine that still seemed as refined as the first time I tried one in a fresh-out-of-the-box model in January.

“The 508 actually felt in better condition after the trip than the Ford Mondeo I had been using, and which had just over 18,000 miles on the clock,” he adds.

The 508 passed the Fleet News aging test with flying colours and even managed to make 60mpg on the drive from Paris to Coventry.

In addition, Peugeot has reduced its number of work refusals by over 60% in 2011, and every refusal is now investigated to ensure there is a valid reason.

However, responding promptly to work requests must be matched by the resultant customer service. Therefore, Peugeot has introduced comprehensive Fleet Aftersales Standards called “PeRFORMeRS” that provide a benchmark service that all Dealers will aspire to.

Through Peugeot’s Fleet Aftersales Standards, the marque is committed to its business customers receiving the following service at Peugeot Dealerships:
