The Need for a Miter Saw
The miter saw has caused so much excitement like the one no other woodworking tool has ever
done. This is a great tool especially for DIY woodworking enthusiasts, who need to experiment
with a wide range of joints and cuts for their woodworking projects. The miter saws enable you
to make creative cuts on wood as no other saw would. Some of the patterns that you can make
using a miter saw include the angled cross cuts such as those used on picture frames, and
dovetail cuts for making dovetail joints. Interestingly, the miter saws derive their name from the
miter joints, which are the slanting joints used in joining the pieces of a picture frame. Miter
saws are available in both manual and electrical kinds.
The Manual Miter Saw
The manual miter saw is a basic backsaw that is attached to a metal base. This backsaw is
attached in such a manner that it can rotate freely, in order to enable precision cutting. The
manual miter saw is more popular with most woodworking workshops, especially DIY
workshops, due to its affordability. To use the manual miter saw, you have to fasten the piece of
wood to be cut using a vice clamp. Then you can fix the cutting angle that you wish to make
using guiding rods.
Some woodworking workshops still have the predecessor to the miter saw; a tool commonly
known as the miter box. The miter box is a tool that has open ends and tops that have guiding
slots cut into them at angles of either 45 or 90 degrees. Piece of wood that are being worked on
are placed inside the box, and the saw inserted into the guiding slots.
The Electrical Miter Saw
Large woodworking workshops are likely to have both manual miter saws and powered miter
saws. This is because the manual miter saws can only be used on the small projects. When it
comes to the larger commercial projects, one has to use a powered miter saw since it is more
efficient and precise. The powered miter saws are relatively expensive as compared to the
manual variety; therefore, a substantial investment needs to be made to acquire one. With the
powered miters saws, a circular saw is mounted on an aluminum base. It possible to adjust the
position of the saw around the base, in order to achieve any desired angle.
There is a wide variety of powered miter saws, such as the sliding saw and compound saw. The
sliding saw is the most popular, due to its ability to exceed its own diameter when cutting wood
pieces. It is able to do this because it is fitted on a sliding rail. A compound powered miter saw
on the other hand, allows for higher precision in cutting, since it has the ability to simultaneously
rotate and tilt the blade while cutting.
