The Nectar of GodThe benefits of drinking Pomegranate Juice

    A testimonial by James Jordan

In March of 2008 I was at an impasse in my life physically. I had all

the symptoms of Osteo Arthritis ravaging my upper body. I hurt all the time.

I had no strength in my hands. To pull on a car door handle was a painful

experience. Opening a jar was embarrassing. I could not lift my arms over

my head without shoulder pain. My elbows also hurt when I tried to lift with

them. I was loosing a lot of sleep due to numbing pain in my left hand. Often

the only way I could sleep was to hang my arms off the side of the bed.

So, what was I doing about this? Basically I was taking over-the-counter

arthritis medicine, which was doing nothing other than slightly masking thesymptoms I have just described.

I began to ask the Lord for guidance in this situation. What the Lord

revealed to me was truly extraordinary. I began to think about the foods that

are described in the Bible. In the Garden of Eden there was the Tree of Life

that Adam and Eve were allowed to eat of before they were expelled from

the garden (Genesis 2). We can only speculate on the type of fruit that was

on the tree of life. Some biblical scholars believe it may have been the

pomegranate. While in the wilderness the children of Israel were fed by God

with mana (thin bread flakes) in the morning, and Quail in the evening

(Exodus 16). When Moses sent the spies into the promised land (Numbers

    13) they brought back clusters of grapes, pomegranates, and figs. When

Daniel asked the chief official over him for a different diet, he asked for only

vegetables (beans) to eat and water to drink (Daniel 1). Samson, Samuel,

John the Baptist, and some think Paul (Acts 18, 21)and Jesus Christ (Matt.

    26) followed the very strict Nazarene (vegetarian) diet that was outlined in

    Numbers 6.

In searching for passages about food I discovered how importantthe pomegranate was in the worship of God. Pomegranates were more than

an important fruit for Gods people to eat. As I searched the scriptures that

referred to pomegranates I found how truly important this little sweet-sour

fruit is. In Exodus 28 & 39 it is explained how the robes of the High Priest

had blue pomegranates woven into it. In 1 Kings 7 we are told how

Solomons Temple had pomegranates carved into its pillars. In Jeremiah 52

when the king of Babylon was destroying the temple there is specific

references made to the pillars with the pomegranates. Another fascinating

fact about pomegranates and Hebrew worship is concerning the seeds of thefruit. In the Hebrew Torah (law) there are 613 laws that are to be followed.

Amazingly, there are said to be 613 seeds inside the pomegranate.

Lastly, I found several references to the pomegranate in the Song of

Solomon. Between chapters 4 & 6 Solomon refers to the pomegranate no

less than six times when speaking to his bride.

Before moving on to the actual health benefits of the pomegranate I

want to mention what other cultures think of the pomegranate. Egypt, India,

Arabia, Hebrew, Greek, Roman, Libya, England, and Spanish cultures all

refer to the pomegranate in their histories. In the Greek myth of Persephome

it is called the fruit of the underworld. In the Muslim Quuram it is called the

fruit of the paradise. As I mentioned earlier many biblical scholars consider

the pomegranate the fruit that may have been on the Tree of Life. Also manycultures believe the pomegranate to be the traditional fruit of fertility. The

pomegranate was cultivated in Egypt before the time of Moses.

Another thing I have read that has really impressed me is that men

in the Middle East who have a steady diet of pomegranate have very low

occurrence of heart disease and prostate cancer.

    Anti-oxidants & free radicals

So what is it that makes pomegranate so special? It all has to dowith a little thing called free radicals. As our body ages both naturally, and

through physical activity free radicals build up. What are free radicals? Quite

simply a free radical is an atom or molecule that has an unstable or unpaired

electron shell that forms when oxygen interacts with the molecule. Once the

free radicals form on tissue they can start a chain reaction that begins to

break down tissue at the cellular level. This breakdown can manifest itself

anywhere from minor muscle and joint pain all the way to many serious

illnesses such as arthritis, vascular disease, and possibly even cancer. The antioxidants that are in the pomegranate are molecules that can

safely interact with free radicals and terminate the chain reaction before vital

molecules and tissue are damaged. The human body has several enzyme

systems that fight the build-up of free radicals, but the primary

micronutrients (vitamin E, beta-carotene, vitamin C, and the trace metal

selenium) are provided by diet. Again, there are many fruits that have

antioxidants, but as I said earlier, pomegranates contain as much as three

times the antioxidants as other fruits.

Whats in the pomegranate & what does it do?

It is the only fruit with three antioxidants- tannis, anthocyanins, and

allagic acid. Pomegranates also contain- potassium, fiber, vitamin C, and

niacin. Researcher, Ephraim Lansky in Japan showed that pomegranate

extract will cause differentiation in Leukemia cells. Pomegranates contain

estrogens, possibly enough to prevent osteoporosis. Pomegranate extract

combined with the herb gotukola has shown to cause significantimprovement in people with periodontal disease. Some women who use

pomegranate juice have reported having to decrease their hormone therapy

due to the estrogen content in the juice.

The University of Wisconsin at Madison is doing research to

determine the possible benefits of Pomegranates on cancer patients during

    and following chemotherapy.

The reason I have included this fact about the University of Wisconsin is

because my mother went there to be treated following breast cancer surgery

in the late 60s, and I believe they were able to provide the means that God

used to extend my mothers life several years. So, when I read info abouttheir research, I believe it. Other research has shown that mice that were

given pomegranate juice had delayed development of tumors. Pomegranate

juice has also shown to restore joint health, especially for arthritis patients.

Some other possible benefits of Pomegranates are:

    Lower LDL cholesterol

    Reduced blood pressure

    Decreased oxidizing of blood platelets

Increased oxygen to heart muscles in coronary patientsPrevents or slows prostate cancer

    Reduced risk of breast cancer

    Restores vascular health (blood vessels)

    Promotes good skin health

Where do I get pomegranate juice, and how much do I drink?

Wal-Mart carries several pomegranate juices. Northland 100%Pomegranate Juice in a 32oz. Bottle is what Susan & I buy. It is actually

mixed with a small amount of water that helps to mellow the taste. On the

juice aisle you can find Pomegranate-Cranberry in a 64oz. bottle in either

Sams Choice or Ocean Spray. The mixed juice may be better for women to

drink. On the specialty juice aisle you can find POM brand of pomegranate

juice. This juice really is pure pomegranate, and is very potent. Most grocery

stores carry some form of pomegranate juice.

I recommend that men drink 3 ounces of pure pomegranate juice 3-4 times aday. This will add up to 9-12 ounces a day.

I recommend that women should drink no more than 8 ounces of juice a day.

This may help control possible estrogen induced reactions.

Pomegranate juice may also be mixed with tea to mellow out the taste. Also

tea has shown to improve saturation rates of the juice.

Several vitamin companies make a pomegranate supplement in a pill form

that has no sugar or calories. The Spring Valley brand has a soft gel

pomegranate pill that can be found on the vitamin aisle at Wal-Mart.

Allow at least 4-8 weeks to see any improvement in joint or circulation

health. Remember that everyone may react differently to pomegranate juice.

Some may see immediate results while others may not see any obvious

    changes.

Do not stop taking any medications that have been prescribed by a physician.

If you are taking powerful medicines that affect the blood, you may need toask your physician about the effect of pomegranate juice.

Dont expect to loose any weight by drinking pomegranate juice. It does

    have natural sugar in it.

What has pomegranate juice done for me?

About one month after I began drinking pomegranate juice my

joints stopped hurting. After about eight weeks of use the strength in myhands had fully returned. Although not completely gone, I rarely have the

same kind of numbness that I previously experienced in my hands when

sleeping. The pain in my elbows and shoulders is gone. My blood pressure

has dropped around 15 points. My colon health seems to be much more

regular. Lastly, my skin looks and feels better than it has in years. The dark

circles under my eyes are much less distinct. Yes, I still have some aches,

but most of those are self-inflicted. One other tidbit of information I want to

share is that since I have been drinking pomegranate juice I have onlymissed 1 days of work and have not run any fever at all.

This article is by no means a scientific document that you can bank

on. It is simply my testimony of restored joint and vascular health. I believe

the Lord has given me a fresh shot at painless living, and I want to share this

with you in the hope that it will help you. I give God all the glory for how I

feel. I am so grateful for His guidance in my life, and allowing me to

discover the nutrients that He put into the pomegranate.

Once again, if you have any previous conditions that involve the

vascular system, you need to consult your physician before drinkingpomegranate juice. This is nothing more than my personal testimony about

the benefits of pomegranate juice. I have no official medical research to

support anything I have written except what I know it has done for me, and

the online articles I have read.
