THE NAVIGATOR

GREETINGS FROM NATHAN PHILLIPS Our New Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

November is traditionally a time of giving thanks, so I want to share my appreciation

to the Northshore community for the warm welcome you have given me as I joined

the staff team two weeks ago. What a delight it has been to chat with members in the

coffee shop, at the Mill Creek open house, on the pickleball court, and in the historic

building at the Kenmore center. As I am learning more about the senior centers and the many

different programs we offer, it is clear that the community you have created together is still strong, in spite of all

the challenges created by the pandemic. I am grateful to the Northshore volunteers, donors, board members, and

staff—especially Brooke Knight—for keeping the center’s vital services like meal programs, transportation, and

health programs operating when many regular offerings were on hiatus.

November is also traditionally the harvest season. As we are gradually reopening programs and activities, the

Northshore staff team and I are interested in harvesting your thoughts about how we can rebuild the vibrant and

bustling community you are used to seeing at your centers. Several of you have already shared some suggestions

with me about how Northshore can build back, even bigger and better than before. Keep those great ideas

coming! We will be sending out a survey this month to collect more of your ideas, but feel free to also use the

suggestion boxes in our centers, or chat with your representatives on the Northshore Advisory Council.

Finally, November is a month of cornucopias, abundance, and giving. As 2021 comes to an end, please consider

donating to Northshore Senior Center to help us continue the vital services we provide in the community, and to

help us rebound from the pandemic. Your membership dues help support the programs

you enjoy at the center, but your philanthropic gift makes it possible to expand our

services to others who couldn’t otherwise afford to join us. Giving is easy and every gift

is important to our work; please look for the gift envelope in your mail this month, or find

the donate button of our website https://bit.ly/DonateTodayNSC.

Thank you again for being a part of the Northshore Senior Center community. In this

month of gratitude, harvest, and sharing, there is no place I would rather be.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT PER THE RECENT COUNTY MANDATE, PROOF OF

VACCINATION OR A NEGATIVE COVID TEST WILL BE REQUIRED FOR ENTRY INTO

ANY OF OUR FACILITIES. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION.

Nathan Phillips - CEO The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that we have

selected Nathan Phillips to succeed Brooke Knight as CEO of

Northshore Senior Center. After reviewing several outstanding

candidates, the Board determined that Nathan has the

experience needed to lead the senior centers out of the

pandemic and to grow our programs to meet the community’s

evolving needs.

In identifying a leader to take over for Brooke, the board was

impressed by Nathan’s previous work at the YMCA of Greater

Seattle where he served as the Chief Administrative Officer and

Regional Vice President. He also oversaw the design and

construction of the Kent YMCA which opened in 2019. Prior to

the YMCA, Nathan directed the South King Council of Human

Services and studied public policy and law at the University of

Washington. On sunny days, Nathan enjoys hiking and biking

with his family. Please join us in welcoming Nathan to the NSC family.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

A huge thank you to Councilmember Rod Dembowski for his on-going support of

our organization. This past month, we were gifted a new (to us) retired vanpool van

to help facilitate transportation and meal delivery in our region. AND...we were also

gifted $25,000 towards the creation of a new outdoor sports court!! We still have

about another $25,000 to raise, but when completed this will be an amazing

addition to our suite of services.

BOTHELL COFFEE BAR UPDATE

Re-Opening & Rededication Ceremony (11/3 at 11am)

Please join us on Wednesday, November 3rd at 11am as we rededicate our newly

refreshed Coffee Bar in honor of Lloyd Ness. Lloyd volunteered with the senior center for

sitting on a barstool in the coffee bar every weekday morning sharing funny stories and

sharing his always infectious laugh.

Following a brief ceremony, guests will be invited to enjoy some treats while they say their farewells to our

departing CEO, Brooke Knight, and welcome our new CEO, Nathan Phillips. All are welcome to join us for this event!

A huge thank you to the Snoqualmie Tribe for funding the work done in the Coffee Bar and for First and Main Design

Market for their help with the design.

Proof of vaccination or negative COVID test within 72 hours will be required for entrance into the facility.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO STAY ACTIVE & ENGAGED? CHECK OUT OUR IN-PERSON PROGRAMS.

Special Tax-Free IRA Gifts Making a gift to Northshore Senior Center from your IRA is a tax-wise way to enrich the lives of your family,

friends and neighbors. If you are 70½ or older, the IRA Charitable Rollover allows you to make a tax-free qualified

charitable distribution (QCD) directly from your IRA. Gifts up to $100,000 are excluded from your federal income.

If you file a joint return, each spouse can exclude up to $100,000 for a maximum of $200,000 each year. This

charitable distribution will even count towards your required minimum distribution (RMD) once you are required

to take a RMD.

You can enjoy these special tax savings so long as:

• The distribution is made from either your Traditional or Roth IRA.

• The distribution is made to a qualified charitable organization, like Northshore Senior Center.

• The distribution is made directly by your plan administrator to Northshore Senior Center.

• A gift made from your IRA will never count as income but always make a difference!

How to Give

Contact your plan administrator and request a qualified charitable distribution be made directly to Northshore

Senior Center. It’s important to know that if you receive the distribution first and then donate the proceeds, the

gift will not count as a qualified charitable distribution. We encourage you to consult with your advisors to fully

understand the legal and financial impact of your charitable gift.
