Dear Alumni, Parents, andFriends,

From the time Xaverianopened its doors back in1957, there have been many

faculty and administrators who have dedicated their lives toserving the students that have walked its halls. Those of uswho were fortunate enough to have spent our high schoolyears here will no doubt remember fondly the faculty andadministrators who served as the role models and positiveinfluences in our lives. As I learned of the passing of BrotherWarren Abel, the fifth man to serve as Principal of Xaverian andthe last Xaverian Brother to serve in that capacity, I recalledwith admiration and gratitude such an important and influentialperson in my life. For many, Brother Warren will be rememberedas the intimidating, no nonsense administrator that seemed to be everywhere in the building. Heaven forbid he caughtyou traveling down the “up” staircase, or cheering a little tooloudly upon learning of a free last period. Even as a first yearteacher, I found myself trying to make sure I didn’t do anythingthat might warrant a call to his office. For those of us who grewto know him better, however, he was a tremendously caringand compassionate person with a deep and unwavering faithin our Lord, and was a person with a genuine love for his students and for Xaverian.

Upon my appointment as President back in 2009, I sought outBrother Warren for advice and counsel. I was both grateful andhumbled by his support and confidence as we spoke of thevision we both shared for Xaverian, and what it would take toachieve that vision. From those early conversations emergedthe beginnings of what would be a multi-year planning processthat would take place here at the school and involve faculty, students, staff, alumni, parents, and friends. In May of this year, the Board of Trustees of Xaverian unanimously approved anew Strategic Plan that sets objectives and prescribes actionsthat will lead the school in realizing an exciting vision for our future.

During this coming year, we will continue to refine the plan as well as the strategy for its multi-phased implementation. The plan will be concentrated in three areas:

First, Enhancing Academic Achievement—Xaverian has long enjoyed a culture of academic excellence. We will continue to develop programs that will further enhance student performance and that will allow us to continue toattract motivated students who will thrive in a challenging and supportive community.

Second, Embracing the Whole Student—As a Catholicschool, Xaverian seeks to nurture and educate the whole student, one who is engaged not only academically, but spiritually and socially, and feels a strong bond to the schoolcommunity.

Third, Empowering Our Future—To provide the highestquality of education and to provide the physical, technological, and financial resources necessary to support our students andfaculty, we will implement an innovative and disciplined planfor enhancing and improving our campus, and will work toestablish and strengthen lifelong relationships with benefactorsand friends which will increase and sustain philanthropic support for our school and its mission.

I want to thank everyone who supported our school this past year.We open our doors this month, welcoming our 9th graders, the Class of 2016, and our 6th graders, the GenesisClass of 2015, into our Xaverian family. I am confident that we are embarking on the greatest chapter in our school’s history and I look forward to sharing more of the details ofour Strategic Plan in the near future. I hope that all of you willconsider supporting our Plan and vision for the future throughyour time, talents, and contributions. May God continue tobless you.

Peace,

Robert B. Alesi ’78, President

As a college-preparatory high school, Xaverian places great importance on the readinessof our students for the college admissions process. What many do not realize is that a strong college

counseling program must begin guidinghigh school students in their freshmanyear. It is with these details in mind thatXaverian’s guidance department hasnamed Ms. Ana Loposky as CollegeCoordinator. In addition to her responsi-bilities as Internship Director andGuidance Counselor, Ms. Loposky hasbeen developing a vibrant four year college counseling program.

Ms. Maria Rodriquez, AssistantPrincipal for Student Support, is thrilledto be overseeing such critical growthwithin Xaverian’s guidance program, saying,“Expanding our college counsel-

ing program is extremely important as college admissions becomes more and more competitive. Colleges and universities are receiving more thandouble the amount of applications theydid just a few years ago. It is importantthat our students have the best opportunities to gain admission to thetop institutions in the country.”

In order to help shape the growingcollege counseling program, Ms. Loposkyattended the five day Harvard SummerInstitute on College Admissions. TheInstitute attracts nearly 200 admissionsand counseling professionals from allover the United States, as well as abroad.Over 40 informational sessions provideinsights into current and future trendsin admissions and provide participantswith the tools they need to effectivelyestablish robust college counseling programs at their schools.

Expanding our college counseling program isextremely important as college admissions becomesmore and more competitive.Colleges and universities arereceiving more than doublethe amount of applicationsthey did just a few years ago. Ms. Loposky returned from theInstitute inspired and energized, saying,“We are creating a sequence of stepsfrom freshman year to senior year wherestudents and their families are introducedto the college application process in acohesive manner.” Beginning in freshmanyear, students will become familiar withNaviance, a program which helps students connect what they do in theclassroom to their life goals, includingfinding colleges and careers based ontheir personal skills and areas of interest.Ms. Loposky will also develop essay writing workshops for students, as wellas create college admissions themedprofessional development opportunitiesfor faculty. Parental contact efforts willalso be revamped. Ms. Loposky plans to offer all college counseling meetingsin smaller group sessions over three tofour days, rather than one large collegecounseling session. She hopes this willprovide parents with more schedulingflexibility and smaller, more intimateinformation sessions with more oppor-tunities for question and answers.

We are creating a sequenceof steps from freshman year to senior year wherestudents and their familiesare introduced to the collegeapplication process in a cohesive manner.— Ms. Ana Loposky

College CoordinatorIn an effort to foster stronger relation-

ships with college admissions officesnationwide, Ms. Rodriguez and Ms.Loposky completed a three day collegetour in which they visited the followingnine institutions: Yale University, HarvardUniversity, Boston College, BostonUniversity, Providence College, BrownUniversity, Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology, Tufts University, and

Wesleyan College. Ms. Loposky will continue to actively work with studentsto promote organized college campusvisits. Additional face time with collegesis available to Xaverian students by way of the College Tuesdays and On-SiteAcceptance programs. College Tuesdaysis a weekly event which features a variety of different colleges and universities stationed in a common area outside of the cafeteria so that students can learn about differentschools at their leisure. The On-SiteAcceptance program offers students the unique opportunity to meet with a college admissions representative atXaverian and learn instantly whetherthey have been accepted to the institution, and also whether they havebeen awarded a scholarship. Schoolsthat currently participate in the On-SiteAcceptance program at Xaverian are St. John’s University, St. Francis College,C.W. Post -Long Island University, and St. Joseph’s College. Xaverian also hostsan annual College Fair on campus eachspring which features representativesfrom over 100 colleges and universities.

IPAX ConcludesSuccessfulInaugural YearIn addition to college counseling, Ms.Loposky oversees the Intern Program at Xaverian (IPAX). IPAX, which waslaunched in November 2011, concludedits inaugural year successfully, garneringrave reviews from both mentors and students alike.

IPAX is a graduation requirement for students in the Honors program which allows students to explore potential careers, learn how to network, and enhance their resumes by gainingvaluable, hands-on experience. IPAXtapped into its impressive base of pro-fessional alumni who were enthusiasticand eager to give back to their almamater by serving as mentors in the areas of Architecture, Aviation, Business,Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Film,Forensic Science, Guidance, Journalism,Law, Marine Biology, Medicine, Music,Performing Arts, Political Science,

Physical Therapy, Psychology, PublicRelations, Sports Medicine/Fitness, andTechnology.

Rick Buttacavoli ’98, Editor-in-Chief ofthe Bay Ridge Eagle, agreed to mentortwo students who had an interest in journalism and called the pairing “a per-fect match.”After sharing the knowledgehe’s amassed during his nearly 10 yearcareer in journalism, Rick said,“The goalof IPAX was to give honor students somereal world experience in a specific fieldof interest. What it actually did, at leastfor me, was reinforce the fact that I hadmade the right decision in my own lifeby pursuing a career that allows me totake advantage of so many wonderfuland rewarding opportunities.”

Students report enrichingexperiences as well.

Nicholas Walsh ’12, who is nowattending Cornell University’sCollege of Veterinary Medicine, completed an

internship with veterinarianDr. Robert Composto. Nicholas said,“All of the doctors were comforting andsincere and were thrilled to have meinterning for the day...I was a bit hesitantat first and wasn’t sure if the surgerywould make me nauseous, but after thefirst few minutes, I absolutely fell in love with observing and watching thesurgeries. What seemed like 15 minutessoon turned into hours as I looked up at the clock and realized I had beenobserving the surgeons for over fourhours!”

IPAX continues to flourish with 71students already placed in internships in their preferred industries for the2012–2013 school year. To volunteer toserve as a mentor, please contact Ms.Ana Loposky, Internship Director, at [email protected] or 718.836.7100,ext.166. Over120 OverseasStudents VisitedXaverian Throughthe InternationalSummer VisitorProgram This summer, Xaverian High School, along with its families, as well as familiesfrom the greater Brooklyn and StatenIsland communities, hosted over 120high school students as part of theInternational Summer Visitor Program. The program, now in its fourth year, places students from Italy, Spain, andRussia with local host families for two, three, or four weeks. The students studyEnglish as a Second Language at Xaverianwith staff from the Emerald Institute of New York, Inc., which is a New YorkState licensed language school based in New York City.

Students attended classes at Xaverianeach morning, saw the sites of New YorkCity in the afternoon, and spent eveningswith their host families. Some of the cultural enrichment activities that theyparticipated in include: walking tours ofvarious New York City neighborhoods, including SoHo, Fifth Avenue, GreenwichVillage, and Coney Island, as well as visits to a Yankees game, the EmpireState Building, the Statue of Liberty, andTop of the Rock at Rockefeller Center.By all accounts the most popular

outing that takes place each year continues to be a group walk over theBrooklyn Bridge.

Students raved about both the academic and cultural sides of the program. Maria José Pesce, 17, a studentvisiting from Milan, Italy, said,“This triptaught me that even though Italy islocated 8,000 kilometers away, we areall the same people with the sameheart.”Another aspect of the trip thatMaria José appreciated was seeing the spontaneity and creativity that permeates life in New York City. Of herwalking tours around New York Cityneighborhoods, Mara José stated,“There is a freedom in the people here. They express themselves...sometimes in crazy ways, but it is healthy!”

Giulia Caldini,18, and Daniela Ghidelli,18, both from Milan, Italy, reported thattheir favorite outing was their visit toEllis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Both girls agreed that Bay Ridge, whichthey described as “quiet and green,”was a nice change from the hustle andbustle of the city.

The program was an enriching expe-rience not only for the visiting students, but also for the local host families.Xaverian families, as well as familiesfrom the Brooklyn and Staten Islandcommunities at large, served as a crucialpart of the International Summer VisitorProgram by opening their homes to the visiting students and creating a safeand comfortable environment for theduration of their stay. Mr. John Ronan,a Bay Ridge resident who serves asXaverian’s Registrar, hosted not one but four visiting students! He said,“Weenjoyed the company of these bright, energetic young people. My young girlsloved the attention and we adults appre-ciate their European perspective on life. Also, we enjoyed seeing Brooklyn andNew York through their eyes. It actuallymakes us appreciate where we live thatmuch more.”

CurriculumEnhancement:Xaverian IntroducesSTEM ProgramBy Principal Dcn. Kevin McCormack

The Labor Department has recentlyreported that 65% of our present students will have jobs that have yet tobe invented and the National ScienceFoundation estimates that the 80% ofjobs created in the next decade willrequire some form of math and scienceskills. These statistics beg the question:“How can a premiere secondary schoolprepare the students for such an opaquefuture?” Steeped in the Xaverian Brothers’tradition, we are very confident in ourstudents’ ability to contribute boldly tofuture, just as their 15,000 alumni broth-ers who have gone before them!

Xaverian High School is proud toannounce that, beginning with the Classof 2017, we will be introducing theinnovative STEM (Science,Technology,Engineering, and Math) curriculum(http://www.stemedcoalition.org).The STEM program is part of a nationaleducational initiative that has beendeveloped in order to better prepareour students for success in the 21st century.

The benefit of the STEM program isthat it not only gives our students a moresolid base of knowledge in the areas ofScience,Technology, Engineering, andMath, but it also employs various tech-nological methods to ensure that stu-dents can use what they’ve learned toproblem-solve and, most importantly, apply what they have learned.

As the first Catholic high school inNew York City to move to a one-to-onecomputing learning environment,Xaverian is in a healthy position toadapt to STEM curriculum. Each studentand teacher being equipped with aniPad means that teachers are able totake advantage of the myriad of educa-tional apps that have been created toserve as companions to STEM lessons.

Additionally, Xaverian will be invitingstudents to become a team in the A.C.E.program (http://www.acementor.org).Led by talented Xaverian alumni, 15-20of our students will develop and executea real world Architecture, Construction, and Engineering project that will offerthem hands on experience with thebest in those respective fields.

This is what Xaverian, rooted in theBrothers’ expectation for greatness, is all about!

From the Sports Desk By Bill Daly Assistant Athletic Director

Baseball The Varsity Clippers baseball team won the CHSAA Brooklyn-Queens division for the fifth consecutive year. The Clippersposted a 16-1 record. They also reached the Elite-8 DoubleElimination playoff round for the ninth straight season, byfar, the longest streak of any CHSAA varsity team.

Swimming The Swim team just keeps getting stronger and faster as they finished 5-0 to win their division. They won the “B”Championship for the second time in four years, broke threeall-time school records on the Frosh level, and broke eight of the nine current records on the Varsity level.

Track Track and Field came through with another successful year. With the record setting performances of Laray Smith, theyare now one of the pace setting teams in CHSAA Track.Laray set all time school records in both the 100 and 200meter races and came in second in a statewide tournamentin Syracuse, NY.

Wrestling Wrestling started the season slowly, but after some solidpractice time and some experience for the underclassmen, won their final two meets. They also performed well in theFarrell “Ironman”Tournament, winning four of their sevenmatches.

Volleyball Volleyball made the playoffs before losing in the quarterfinals. We are looking forward to the underclassmen stepping upnext year as the team loses eight seniors from its roster.

Basketball The end of an era came to Xaverian Basketball this year astwo of our most respected and talented players moved ontotheir college careers. Dillon Burns and Brian Bernardi weretwo of seven seniors to graduate from the basketball program. They led the Clippers to the Quarterfinal Round of the City Playoffs.

Hockey The Hockey team had their loyal fans fill up the AviatorSports Complex at their Friday night home games for someexciting action. Check out the Xaverian website for schedules, then come on down and enjoy.

BowlingAfter winning the CHSAA Championship on both levels last year, each team fell a couple of pins short on both theVarsity and Junior Varsity level this season. Both teams madethe playoffs in one of the closest races in years in CHSAABowling, but lost in the inter-sectional finals.

TennisThe ball did not bounce well this year for the tennis team.A couple of close matches that were lost, a few rainouts, and only one win made for a long season. A strong incomingFrosh class will put the program in the right directiontoward a CHSAA championship.

Alumni News Sense of LegacyStrong Within theClass of 2016This school year, the sons of 17 alumniwill enter Xaverian as members of theClass of 2016. Although the decision ofwhich high school to attend ultimatelyfalls to the student, there are many proudfathers who look forward to recallingtheir days at Xaverian through theupcoming experiences of their sons at7100 Shore Road. Below are some oftheir reflections.

Michael Ganim ’88 Xaverian is a beautiful school. I had a great experience there, and I know my son Thomas will too. We looked atMonsignor Farrell, St. Joe’s by the Sea,and Poly Prep in addition to Xaverian. In the back of my mind and heart,I always wanted Thomas to pick Xaverian.Ultimately the decision was up to him,and I am glad he picked my alma mater. We live in Staten Island, but even thoughyou have to go over the bridge, it reallydoesn’t take any longer to commutefrom here than it does Marine Park andMill Basin. We judged schools more on their resumes than by their locale.Just like the high school looks into theresumes/backgrounds of their potentialstudents, we look at the school the sameway. We look at a lot of things, includingthe list of colleges and universities thataccept Xaverian students. That list is very

impressive and definitely had a majorimpact on our decision. To put it simply,Xaverian has a great resume. I also lovethe fact that many of the same teachersI had when I went to Xaverian still teachthere. It shows the great strength of the school community.

Tom D’Elia ’81 I am so thrilled that my oldest son,Thomas, has chosen to attend XaverianHigh School this fall.Thomas continuesthe legacy first started by my brother,Louis ’78, and then proudly followed by myself and then Louis’s two sons,Louis O. ’04 and Jonathan T. ’11. It wasmy education and overall experience at Xaverian that paved the way for what-ever successes I have been fortunateenough to achieve and made me into theperson I am today. Xaverian presentedan environment that fostered criticalthinking and organizational skills neces-sary to succeed and endure during very challenging times. Along with itschallenging and vast curriculum, Xaverianboasts small class sizes, individual attention, and some of the most knowl-edgeable and creative faculty membersaround. There are also countless offeringsof clubs, organizations, and athletic teams. The combination of a fair but rigorouscurriculum along with unique extracur-ricular activities place Xaverian graduatesat a distinct advantage in preparation for college and other advanced forms of study. Overall, I am looking forwardto the start of a renewed phase of participation in Xaverian activities, andam confident that young Thomas will be

presented with the same opportunitiesto grow as a student, a Christian, and, eventually, a successful alumnus of thisgreat institution.

Joe Pacheco ’75 I am very proud of my son and honoredthat he is entering the very school that I cherished during my teenage years. My son now embarks aboard the ClipperShip on a journey which will be differentthan mine, but hopefully with many similarities as well. As my son beginsthis special time in his life, I look backat my time at Xaverian and cherish thememories. My son will now be part of a group of young men that I consider to be fellow Clippers. I look forward toknowing my son in this same respect. When I returned to Xaverian with myson, I experienced chills as I passed thelockers in the hallway...even thoughthey look so small to me now, they usedto seem so big and were so much a part of my life. I look back fondly on the school dances, retreats, and all theevents that shaped my high schoolexperience.

I am so proud my son is embarkingon this journey at Xaverian. He followsnot only in my footsteps, but also inthose of his uncle, who is also a graduate. His experiences will be different frommine, but the joys and wonderful memories will share a certain similarity.A legacy is being created, and I look forward to sharing in some of hismoments at Xaverian—maybe evenreliving some of mine too.

The Young Menand the SeaXaverian Ferry Tales Although the Brothers selected the magnificent 19th century clipper shipsas the symbol of their flagship schooloverlooking New York Harbor, fewXaverian students had a nautical experi-ence while in high school. Except, ofcourse, for those intrepid Staten Islanderswho daily traveled the sea route to7100 Shore Road aboard the famous69th Street Ferry, the only way acrossthe bay before the construction of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

Whenever Island alumni from theearly years are present, you can bet thata reference to the maritime commuteon the “boats” (named The Tides, TheHamilton, The Gowanus, and The EGDiefenbach) is inevitable. The salt air,the rolling deck in rough weather, thesound of foghorns, the smell of dieselfuel, the sight of dozens of vessels atanchor in the bay, and the camaraderieof schoolmates all combined to helpform special friendships.

While a Bay Ridge fixture for morethan half a century, few at Xaverian todayeven know why a large painting of theBrooklyn-Staten Island Ferry hangs in the Shore Road entrance. BetweenSeptember 1957 and November 1965,approximately 125 Staten Island studentsmade the daily crossing. A recent letterto these alumni brought to light someinteresting memories of this uniqueaspect of the school’s history.A sampling:

❱ Paraphrasing the poet Edna St.VincentMillay:“We were very tired, we werevery merry. We had gone back and forthfour years on the ferry...” Virtually all ofthe

days were routine. Most guys got the8:00 am boat because it timed well withthe beginning of school. The ferry ridewas always the best time for me—youcould catch up on homework, collabo-rate to get that nasty Physics problemfrom Brother Lucas, or just socialize.Theboat home depended on your activity.I ran track, so most days I got a 4:30 pmor 5:00 pm boat. —Don Bouchoux ’64

❱ “Fogs made for fun on the water. Iremember a particularly thick fog forwhich the ferry captain had placed twodeckhands at either side of the bow ofthe boat to listen for the bells of shipsanchored in the Narrows. We all distinct-ly heard the ringing of a bell—and thenwatched the deckhands point in oppo-site directions.” —Tony Tighe ’62

❱ On several occasions, we had nearcrashes due to high winds and sea statesin the Bay.Waiting at the 69th St. Pierwas tough since the waiting room wasso tiny and cold, especially in the win-ter. —Bob Kittredge ’62

❱ The 69th Street Ferry boats were not very large and not equipped withradar. When there was thick fog, theboats didn’t operate. Those delays were considered “excused late.” I vividlyremember one morning when it waswell past 9:30 am and the forecast wasfor no lifting of the fog before noon. Oneof the upperclassmen called BrotherThaddeus and was told to “round up the herd,” take the Staten Island Ferry to Manhattan and then the subway toBrooklyn. What a scene! I think wemade it just in time for lunch period! —Tom “Smitty” Smith ’63

❱ I was on the ferry in 1962 duringHurricane Donna. I remember the captain just barely guiding the ferry intothe docking apron when there wasn’tmuch of the slip showing above water. It was the last ferry to make the trip

that morning because the water hadbecome too high. —Bill Philpot ’65

❱ A lot of homework was done (copied!)on the morning trip over. Cries of,“Whohas the math homework?” or English orwhatever wasn’t done the night beforecould be heard most days. You had 20minutes to get everything you needed. The waiting area on 69th Street was asmall shack that had the best chocolatedonuts for a nickel.—Ted Adams ’62

❱ During one particularly bad storm,we [students] were the only ones toboard. No cars, just schoolboys.Theupperclassmen decided that it would be a great time for some freshmen initiation (so 1960’s, so politically incorrect nowadays). In rough sailing, waves were breaking over the bow andwashing down through the car deck. One frosh was asked to stand at thefront of the top deck and periodicallyshout “Whale Ho!”Another measuredthe length of the upper deck—outsidein the storm—with a ruler, while the restran from side to side amidships trying to rock the boat with their weight! —Don Bouchoux ’64

❱ And who could forget prom nightwhen all us guys who had rented limosfor the evening had them drive us to theferry terminal in Manhattan so we couldtake that ferry to St. George and thentake the 69th Street Ferry to theBrooklyn dock where the same limoswere waiting to drive us the two blocksto Xaverian for our after-prom breakfast.—Tony Tighe ’62

❱ Day by day, we had a front row seat to the spectacle of seeing a suspensionbridge being built. First we watched thetowers being built, then the spinning ofthe suspension wires, then the suspen-sion of the roadway from those wires. Itwas slow, but it occurred over all of thefour years of the class of ’64 at Xaverian.—Don Bouchoux ’64

❱ It was a real blow when the VerrazanoBridge opened and ferry service endedjust before Thanksgiving in 1964. It wasa much longer journey by bus and muchless pleasant trip once the ferry wasclosed.“Life is a journey. Enjoy the ride.Tomorrow is promised to no one.”—Tom “Smitty” Smith ’63

In the days of the 69th Street Ferry, just over 6% of the student body lived in Staten Island.Today, 17% of Xaverian students make the commute toBrooklyn. With a grateful salute to our many alumnicontributors, S. Heiles ’64, Consultant andArchivist [email protected]

2011–2012 Development Report Corinne M. King, Director of Development

The 2011–2012 Development Program saw success, measured by the growth

in revenue of our Clipper Fund, scholarship initiatives, and special events.

An equally important barometer of success was a notable increase in the

number of Xaverian alumni, parents, faculty, and friends who are participating

in these efforts. Xaverian’s ability to continue to attract and retain outstanding

teachers through competitive compensation, offer academic scholarships

and financial aid, and provide the technology and resources required of

a premier education, are directly tied to the support and leadership of all of

our constituents. On behalf of all at Xaverian, thank you for your generosity

and loyalty to our school.

Tristani Family Establishes theCosimo TristaniMemorial Scholarshipat XaverianWe are pleased to announce thatAnthony Tristani ’95 and Nino Tristani ’99,together with their mother Nancy, have established the Cosimo TristaniMemorial Scholarship at Xaverian.

Cosimo Tristani embodies the trueAmerican dream. After emigrating from Italy at 21 years of age, he came to America and started a new life.He left a life of struggle and poverty, vowing to prosper and to take care of his family, which he did. Unable toattend school as a child, a strong empha-sis on faith and education was fosteredwithin him and passed down to his children and grandchildren. Hisaccomplishments as a father, husband, businessman and devout Catholic set atremendous example for his family andfriends. His drive, hard work, honestyand integrity led him down a path ofhappiness and satisfaction. Cosimo’shumility and generosity were a part ofhis daily life. He believed in teaching by example and took pride in helpinganyone he could.

The Cosimo Tristani MemorialScholarship is granted to a young man displaying the hard work, humility, integrity, faith, and family values that setan example for his family and peers.

In Memoriam:Brother Warren Abel, C.F.X.The Xaverian High School community was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Brother Warren Abel, C.F.X., Xaverian’s fifth Principal, on August 7, 2012.A native of Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn, Brother Warren, (formerly Brother Melvin),a graduate of Regis High School, Xaverian College and Catholic University, served in many capacities as a Brother, before being named our Assistant Principal in1968. A Xaverian Brother for more than 60 years, he had been residing at theBrothers’ residence in Danvers, MA. He was 80 years old.

In 1982, Brother Warren began histenure as Principal; one that wouldlast eleven years and bring aboutsome of the most significant changesin Xaverian’s history. Recognizing the pivotal impact of emerging tech-nology on education, Brother Warren oversaw the construction of theTechnology and Research Center, preparing Xaverian’s students for the21st Century. As the driving forcebehind the Capital Campaign thatfunded the project, Brother Warrennot only gained the support ofXaverian Alumni, but their predecessors as well—the Alumni of St. Michael’sDiocesan High School.

Known as an incredibly skilled teacher and administrator, Brother Warren epitomized the values of the Brothers. While many remember with amazement hisability to create an annual schedule for 1,400 students and 90 faculty memberswithout the aid of a computer, even more recall the kindness and devotion withwhich he treated students, colleagues and friends. There was no favor he would not extend; nor did he ever receive a courtesy without showing his gratitude.

The Class of 1993, the last to graduate with Brother Warren as its Principal, dedicated its yearbook to him by stating,“You may no longer be our captain, but you will always be our shipmate.”

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.May his soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God,rest in peace.

A memorial service honoring the memory of BrotherWarren Abel, C.F.X. will be held at Xaverian High School on Saturday,October 13, at 4:00 pm. All are invited to attend. For details, please visit www.xaverian.org/alumnievents.

Alumni Reflections:“Xaverian High School is,indeed, a better place because of him.”—Robert Windorf ’76

“Brother Melvin was my freshman and sophomore English teacher at Xaverian(1962–64). I last saw him when I visited the school in 2008 or 2009. He was using a walker and had an ailing heart, but his memory was as sharp as ever as we reminisced about those years in the mid-60’s.”—Carl Fehlandt ’66

“I do remember Brother Warren Abel as a stern but fair Brother at Xaverian, another great man has passed to eternal life! —William R.Trapani ’83

“Sorry for our loss...Brother Warren was a great man! He taught us a lot. Brother will be missed.Wonderful memories to cherish.Thank You!”—Gene Walsh ’73
