At the May monthly meeting (Tue night, May 14) we will install new members and award King Haakon medallions to several former presidents. Additionally, we hope to have as our guest Mr. Rolando Rosas, principal of Kitty Hawk School, which the lodge supports with its Adopt a School program. He will tell us a little bit about his school and its mission; Kitty Hawk will be the recipient of our annual Adopt a School award. I think we will find his remarks most interesting. Take a look at the flyer else- where in this issue, and kindly let us know if you are coming. We have included photos of the pool, yard and public playground elsewhere in this Navigator so that you can get an idea of the facilities. The kids, especially, may like to swim. Ron Byrd and I have just re- turned (as I write this) from Zone 1 Director Dr. Dave Severson’s day-long semi- nar on writing, which was excellent. Too bad Dick Tracysen didn’t make it. The Bjornson lodge folks were great hosts for the event. Remember the ancient TV show “Queen for a Day?” Well, we can make you “Vice President of the lodge IN a day,” if you are interested. We also have other open officer positions. We know everyone has more activities and responsi- bilities than they would like. Nevertheless, try and re- serve a little time for your lodge activities – I think you will find it rewarding. See you soon. Steve President Steve. Photo taken after three months on the job...

The Boston Marathon. We are happy and relieved to report that lodge mem-ber Nancy Ottum and her husband Bruce Wright, who attended the marathon, were not injured. Bruce ran in the event and qualified to run again next year.… Kudos to lodge member Michael Kahn, who participated in the Camp Norge work party on March 23rd…. Kon-Tiki, the flick. Last month we provided an extensive write-up on this new movie. Our best information now is that it will open at the Tower about May 3rd. The version we will see here in the US is in Eng-lish. Interestingly, the pro-duction company filmed every scene (almost) first in Norwegian, and then again in English. Sometimes the English filming highlighted something that caused them to go back and film it again, slightly modified, in Norwe-gian. The idea was that they needed an English language version for consumption world wide, as so few people speak Norwegian, and sub-titles were not desired by the producers, who of course have a significant invest-ment in the film. Although not the first movie pro-duced in this fashion, there have been no others re-cently. Norwegian-American Reese Witherspoon (right) was contrite after being arrested for mouthing off to a police officer after her husband was arrested for drunk driving. It seems she also had a touch too much aquavit, or similar… The lodge will be 85 years old next year. A celebra-tion is in the planning stages.

Norwegian golfer Suzann Pettersen (left) is really hitting her stride on the LPGA tour here in the US. She just won the LPGA Lotte Championship tourna-ment in Hawaii. This was her eleventh LPGA tour title… Memorial Day Fundraiser for Camp Norge. Each lodge in District 6 is sent tickets for the District-wide fundraiser for Camp Norge. Funds raised go to-wards keeping your camp maintained and functional. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Prizes are $100, $50, and $25.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE PRESENT TO WIN. Look for Carol Lee Solheim at the next meeting to

purchase your tick-ets… For your future (but not too distant future) reference, a prelimi-nary copy of the flyer for the Summer BBQ is provided on page 9…

Zone 1 Director Dave Severson has written at least two books available on Kindle… Its not too early to be preparing for the 2014 Conven-tion Folk Art Exhibition and Competition (Palm

Springs, June, 2014). As with any skill or competition, you have to try it to compete. These are some of the Tradi-tional Folk Art Catego-ries: Rosemaling, weav-ing, embroidery, knit-ting, carving, painting, and quite a few others. Check out the District 6 website (sofn6.com).

SIDEBARS FROM THE EDITOR…

IN MEMORIAM Stanley Lemkuil, son of lodge members Jeanne Lemkuil (sister), Pearl Lemkuil (mother) and the late Burdelle Lemkuil (father; former president of the lodge) passed away on April 5th at the age of 63. Although not a member himself, we often saw him at lodge events. He was a professional sound effects creator and comedian. There was a complete Remem-brance notice in the April 27th Sacramento Bee.

TIME magazine recently presented its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world, from artists and leaders to pioneers, titans and icons, and Norwegian chess master Sven Magnus Øen Carlsen was on the list. Time cited a statement by the former chess world champion and political activist Garry Kasparov, “His intuitive style conserves the mystique of chess at a time when every CPU-enhanced fan thinks the game is easy. Carlsen is as charismatic and independent as he is talented. If he can rekindle the world’s fascination with the royal game, we will soon be living in the Carlsen Era.” Carlsen is a Norwegian chess grandmaster and former chess prodigy who is the No. 1 ranked player in the world. His peak Elo rating is 2872, the highest in his-tory; he was the 2009 World Blitz chess champion.

In 2004 Carlsen became a Grandmaster at the age of 13, making him at that time the second youngest Grandmaster in history, although he has since become the third youngest. On the 2009 FIDE rating list, Carlsen had an Elo rating of 2801,

becoming the fifth player to achieve a rating over 2800. He was less than 19 years old at the time and was by far the youngest ever to do so. In 2010, at the age of 19, he became the youngest chess player in history to be ranked No. 1 in the world, breaking the record held by Vladimir Kramnik. On this January’s FIDE rating list, Carlsen reached an Elo rating of 2861, thus surpassing Garry Kasparov’s rating record of 2851 (set in July 1999). Based on several of his FIDE rankings, Carlsen qualified for the Candidates Tournament that took place in March–April 2013, which he won, thus earning the right to challenge World Champion Viswanathan An-and in the World Chess Championship 2013.

Known for his attacking style as a teenager, it is said Carlsen has developed into a more universal player. He does not focus on opening preparation as much as other top players, and plays a variety of openings, making it harder for opponents to prepare against him. His positional mastery and endgame prowess have drawn com-parisons to those of former world champions Anatoly Karpov, José Capablanca and Vasily Smyslov.

I myself chal-lenged him to a game when he was five, and I barely beat him. I couldn’t re-member what those darned horse figures were for. -DT

"We find it regrettable, but we preferred to move forward the Norwegian exams to avoid problems," Roar Aasen, the head-master of an upper secondary school in Aalesund on Norway's west coast, told newspapers in mid-April. In total, five schools in the town -- more than a seven hours' drive from Oslo -- decided not to hold exams on April 16th and 17th since they coincided with two of Bieber's three gigs in the Norwegian capital. The tests, which would have been taken by around 500 pupils, will now be held on May 10th and 11th. “We made this decision three or four months ago when we found out many students had already bought their tickets, and because it didn't pose any organizational problems for us," said Aasen. But the school is not setting "a precedent" for future concerts, he added. Bieber, who is 19, sparked chaos in Oslo in May last year when dozens of teenagers chased the singer's car in the hope of following him to a free concert at a location that was only revealed at the last minute. Now, however, the town fathers are de-bating what to do when that great Ameri-can statesman and ambassador of good will, Dennis Rodman, fresh from his ground-breaking trip to North Korea, vis-its Norway later this month and the whole country shuts down. Rodman plans to offer three-on-three basketball clinics to the youth, and he expects to charm the Norwegian leaders just as he did Kim Jong Un. When asked if he was going to reveal any nuclear secrets he gleaned while in North Korea, he replied with a curt, “My very presence is nuclear enough for most people.” - DT
