SCIENCE IN SOCIETY

• Science: a way or process used to investigate what is happening around you.

• Can provide answers to questions

SCIENCE IS NOT NEW

• Early scientists used observations to answer questions they had about what was happening around them.

• Observations use sight, touch, smell, taste, and hearing. (senses)

• Senses can be misleading• Scientists observe, investigate, and

experiment to find answers.

SCIENCE IS A TOOL

• Science can be used to compare how people tracked the source of cholera in the past, and how they are tracking E. Coli now.

USING PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

• Scientists use prior experience to predict what will occur in investigations.

• Scientists form theories when their predictions have been well tested.

• Theory: an explanation supported by facts.

• Laws: rules that describe a pattern in nature (gravity is an example).

USING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

• Scientists use skills and tools to find similarities and differences.

• Computers are used to analyze data

• Technology is the application of science to make products or tools that people can use.

OBSERVATION AND MEASUREMENT

• 3 skills scientists use are observing measuring and comparing and contrasting.

• Observations and measurements go hand in hand.

• Comparing: looking for similarities• Contrasting: looking for

differences.

COMMUNICATION IN SCIENCE

• Scientists use several methods to communicate their observations

• Results and conclusions are often reported in published scientific journals/magazines.

QUESTIONS: DUE TOMORROW MORNING1. Define Science, Observation, and

Technology.2. Why do you think senses may be

misleading?3. What is the difference between a

theory and a law?4. Determine what some skills used in

science are. Name one science skill that you have used today.

5. Give a real life example of comparing and contrasting.
