V. Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

R. i confess to almighty god and to you, my brothers and sisters, that i have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what i have done and in what i have failed to do,

[All strike their breast] through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault;

therefore i ask blessed Mary ever-virgin, all the angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the lord our god.

V. May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

R. amen.

For Zion’s sake I will not be silent, for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet, until her vindication shines forth like the dawn and her victory like a burning torch.

Nations shall behold your vindication, and all the kings your glory;you shall be called by a new name pronounced by the mouth of the Lord. You shall be a glorious crown in the hand of the Lord, a royal diadem held by your God.No more shall people call you “Forsaken,” or your land “Desolate,”but you shall be called “My Delight,”and your land “Espoused.”

For the Lord delights in you and makes your land his spouse. As a young man marries a virgin, your Builder shall marry you;and as a bridegroom rejoices in his bride so shall your God rejoice in you.

When Paul reached Antioch in Pisidia and entered the synagogue, he stood up, motioned with his hand, and said, “Fellow Israelites and you others who are God-fearing, listen. The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors and exalted the people during their sojourn in the land of Egypt. With uplifted arm he led them out of it.Then he removed Saul and raised up David as king; of him he testified, ‘I have found David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will carry out my every wish.’From this man’s descendants God, according to his promise, has brought to Israel a savior, Jesus.John heralded his coming by proclaiming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel; and as John was completing his course, he would say, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he.Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.’”

SeCoNd readiNg Acts 13:16–17, 22–25

God has brought to Israel a savior, Jesus.

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar.Perez became the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab.Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab.Boaz became the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth.Obed became the father of Jesse, Jesse the father of David the king.

David became the father of Solomon, whose mother had been the wife of Uriah.Solomon became the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asaph.Asaph became the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Uzziah.Uzziah became the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah.Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amos, Amos the father of Josiah.Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the Babylonian exile.

After the Babylonian exile, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, Zerubbabel the father of Abiud.Abiud became the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, Azor the father of Zadok.Zadok became the father of Achim, Achim the father of Eliud, Eliud the father of Eleazar.

Eleazar became the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary.Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ.

Thus the total number of generations from Abraham to David is fourteen generations; from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations; from the Babylonian exile to the Christ, fourteen generations.

Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly.Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.”When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.

[After the Gospel]V. The Gospel of the Lord.R. Praise to you, lord Jesus Christ.

The word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram! I am your shield; I will make your reward very great.”But Abram said, “O Lord God, what good will your gifts be, if I keep on being childless and have as my heir the steward of my house, Eliezer?” Abram continued, “See You have given me no offspring, and so one of my servants will be my heir.”

Then the word of the Lord came to him: “No, that one shall not be your heir; your own issue shall be your heir.”He took him outside and said: “Look up at the sky and count the stars if you can. Just so,” he added, “shall your descendants be.” Abram put his faith in the Lord, Who credited it to him as an act of righteousness.

He then said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as a possession.”

“O Lord God,” he asked, “how am I to know that I shall possess it?”He answered him, “Bring me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old she goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” Abram brought him all these, split them in two, and placed each half opposite the other; but the birds he did not cut up. Birds of prey swooped down on the carcasses, but Abram stayed with them. As the sun was about to set, a trance fell upon Abram, and a deep, terrifying darkness enveloped him. When the sun had set and it was dark, there appeared a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch, which passed between those pieces. It was on that occasion that the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: “To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the Great River the Euphrates.”

Come, quickly come, and let thy glory shine,Gilding our darksome heaven with rays Divine.

Thy saints with holy lustre round Thee move,As stars about thy throne, set in the heightOf God’s ordaining counsel, as Thy sightGives measured grace to each, Thy power to prove.

Let Thy bright beams disperse the gloom of sin,Our nature all shall feel eternal dayIn fellowship with thee, transforming dayTo souls erewhile unclean, now pure within. Amen.

The Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying: Ask for a sign from the Lord, your God; let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the sky! But Ahaz answered, “I will not ask! I will not tempt the Lord!” Then Isaiah said: Listen, O house of David! Is it not enough for you to weary people, must you also weary my God? Therefore the Lord Himself will

give you this sign: the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name Him Emmanuel. Which means “God is with us!”

On that day, a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom.

The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him:a Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,a Spirit of counsel and of strength,a Spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord, and His delight shall be the fear of the Lord.

Not by appearance shall He judge, nor by hearsay shall He decide, but He shall judge the poor with justice, and decide aright for the land’s afflicted.

He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked.

Justice shall be the band around His waist, and faithfulness a belt upon His hips.

Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb,and the leopard shall lie down with the kid;

The calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them.

The cow and the bear shall be neighbors, together their young shall rest;the lion shall eat hay like the ox.

The baby shall play by the cobra’s den,and the child lay his hand on the adder’s lair.

There shall be no harm or ruin on all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the Lord, as water covers the sea.

On that day,the root of Jesse, set up as a signal for the nations, the Gentiles shall seek out,for His dwelling shall be glorious.

Bring not a crown to wear, upon His head so fair,He needs no gold upon His shining hair,Place not a sceptre in His hands,For this my babe no glory understands,Nor shall He reign o’er earthly lands.

Bring not your incense sweet, to lay before His feet,For thrones shall pass and kingly joys are fleet.Greet not my babe in homage deep,Let no praise break upon His sleep,Like guarding angels, silence keep.

Bring Him your hearts alone, to God such gifts are known,The poor and meek the Father calls His own,Only your love and service bring,At gifts so sweet the Heavens sing,O enter now and greet your King!

22 i The Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord Christmas Eve Service of Lessons and Carols i Sunday, December 24, 2017 at 11:15 p.m. i 23

Dearly beloved, today our Savior is born; let us rejoice. Sadness should have no place on the birthday of life. The fear of death has been swallowed up; life brings us joy with the promise of eternal happiness. No one is shut out from this joy; all share the same reason for rejoicing. Our Lord, victor over sin and death, finding no man free from sin, came to free us all. Let the saint rejoice as he sees the palm of victory at hand. Let the sinner be glad as he receives the offer of forgiveness. Let the pagan take courage as he is summoned to life.

In the fullness of time, chosen in the unfathomable depths of God’s wisdom, the Son of God took for Himself our common humanity in order to reconcile it with its Creator. He came to overthrow the devil, the origin of death, in that very nature by which he had overthrown mankind.

And so at the birth of our Lord the angels sing in joy: Glory to God in the highest, and they proclaim peace to His people on earth as they see the heavenly Jerusalem being built from all the nations of the world. When the angels on high are so exultant at this marvelous work of God’s goodness, what joy should it not bring to the lowly hearts of men?

Beloved, let us give thanks to God the Father; through His Son, in the Holy Spirit, because in His great love for us He took pity on us, and when we were dead in our sins he brought us to life with Christ, so that in Him we might be a new creation. Let us throw off our old nature and all its ways and, as we have come to birth in Christ, let us renounce the works of the flesh.

Christian, remember your dignity, and now that you share in God’s own nature, do not return by sin to your former base condition. Bear in mind who is your head and of whose body you are a member. Do not forget that you have been rescued from the power of darkness and brought into the light of God’s kingdom. Through the sacrament of baptism you have become a temple of the Holy Spirit. Do not drive away so great a guest by evil conduct and become again a slave to the devil, for your liberty was bought by the Blood of Christ.

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone. You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing, as they rejoice before You as at the harvest, as people make merry when dividing spoils. For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their shoulder, and the rod of their taskmaster You have smashed, as on the day of Midian. For every boot that tramped in battle, every cloak rolled in blood, will be burned as fuel for flames.

For a Child is born to us, a Son is given us; upon His shoulder dominion rests. They name Him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. His dominion is vast and forever peaceful, from David’s throne, and over His kingdom, which He confirms and sustains by judgment and justice, both now and forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this!

Beloved: The grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God and savior Jesus Christ, Who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a people as His own, eager to do what is good.

V. The Lord be with you.R. and with your spirit.V. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.R. glory to you, o lord.

A savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord.

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town. And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock. The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear. The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

[After the Gospel]V. The Gospel of the Lord.R. Praise to you, lord Jesus Christ.[All remain standing until Bishop Scharfenberger has reverenced the book of the Gospels.]

The ProfeSSioN of faiTh The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

[All kneel.]and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Bring a torch, Jeannette Isabella,Bring a torch to the cradle, run!Bring a torch, Jeannette Isabella,Bring a torch to the cradle, run!It is Jesus, good folk of the village;Christ is born, and Mary’s calling.Ah! Ah! Beautiful is the Mother!Ah! Ah! Beautiful is the Child!

It is wrong, while the Child is sleeping,It is wrong to talk so loud;It is wrong, while the Child is sleeping,It is wrong to talk so loud;Silence, all, as you gather around,Lest your noise should waken Jesus:Hush! Hush! See how fast He slumbers!Hush! Hush! See how fast He sleeps!

Through the doorward softly filing,To His manger bed we come,Torches glowing, the Babe discloses,Fair as snow, with cheeks like roses!Soft! Soft! See how the Infant slumbers!Soft! Soft! Watch the Infant sleep!

Skies are glowing, the heavens are cloudless,Bright the path to the manger bed!Skies are glowing, the heavens are cloudless,Bright the path to the manger bed!Hasten all who would see the Child Jesus,Shining bright as yonder star!Ah! Ah! Beautiful is the Mother!Ah! Ah! Beautiful is the Child!

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings glad tidings, announcing peace, bearing good news, announcing salvation, and saying to Zion, “Your God is King!”

Hark! Your sentinels raise a cry, together they shout for joy,for they see directly, before their eyes, the Lord restoring Zion.Break out together in song, O ruins of Jerusalem!

For the Lord comforts his people, he redeems Jerusalem. The Lord has bared his holy arm in the sight of all the nations;all the ends of the earth will behold the salvation of our God.

SeCoNd readiNg Hebrews 1:1–6

God has spoken to us through the Son.

Brothers and sisters:In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days, he has spoken to us through the Son, whom he made heir of all things and through whom he created the universe, who is the refulgence of his glory, the very imprint of his being, and who sustains all things by his mighty word. When he had accomplished purification from sins, he took his seat at the right hand of the Majesty on high, as far superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

For to which of the angels did God ever say: You are my son; this day I have begotten you?Or again: I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me?And again, when he leads the firstborn into the world, he says: Let all the angels of God worship him.

Amen.

V. The Lord be with you.R. and with your spirit.V. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.R. glory to you, o lord.

And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

goSPel John 1:1–8

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be.What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race;the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.A man named John was sent from God.He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.He was not the light, but came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him.He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him.

But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision but of God. And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.John testified to him and cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’”From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace, because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God.The only Son, God, who is at the Father’s side, has revealed him.

[After the Gospel]V. The Gospel of the Lord.R. Praise to you, lord Jesus Christ.
