Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Fifty years ago this summer, Pope (and soon-to-be Saint) Paul VI issued a document entitled Humanae Vi-tae. The Holy Father reaffirmed age-old Christian teaching on the meaning of human sexuality and the sanctity of the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. Although a great amount of hostility and protest ensued after its
release, this brief treatise remains as relevant today as ever, and has actually proven prophetic in Paul VI’s projections about the outcome of modern elements of the culture of death. Over the next several weekends, I will provide a series of col-umns which will contain excerpts and observations on this im-portant encyclical letter. Any announcements I need to make on parish and current events will appear elsewhere in the bulletin. I will use the translation of the text from Dr. Janet Smith, an Ameri-can theologian and an expert in pro-life studies. Humanae Vitae is relatively brief, as far as such texts go, and so I heartily en-courage you to find it online at www.vatican.va and add it to your summer reading. May God bless you! Father James Gross

“A young man entered a monastery. He took a vow of silence, but once a year he was allowed to write one word on a chalkboard in front of the head monk. The first year of silence was difficult, but on Word Day he wrote “the” on the chalkboard. The second year was also difficult — it was a strug-gle to remain silent — but finally Word Day rolled around, and the monk wrote “food” on the chalkboard. The third year was excruciating. But he made it through, and when Word Day came again he wrote down the word "stinks.” “What’s with you?” the head monk asked. “you’ve been here for three years and all you do is complain.”

Stewardship is a lifestyle, it’s not a program or a process. It’s how we are called to live our lives twentyfour hours a day, seven days a week! It challenges us to live “Godcentered” lives, not “selfcentered” lives. Reflect on your daily activities, do you do them for the glory of God or for the glory of your own name?

2017-2018 HFSM 5th Grade Graduating Class Favorite Bible Verse and Memories by
Avery Renee Holthaus—I am a Disciple of Christ
A voice came down from heaven and said… “You are my own dear child, I am pleased with you.” Mark 1:11
Sacrificing his life, miracles, serving, washing feet, forgiving our sins, and the many more acts that Jesus performed are all what God is pleased about. While Jesus was doing these wonderful works of mercy, God called to Jesus and said he was pleased with him for all he had done to shape our world to what it is now. This bible verse is very special to me because I choose to follow God’s path for me. I will keep God on my mind, lips, and soul. He is my shepherd, and I will follow my shepherd. Jesus is my sav-ior, I will do what he asks.
Memories at Holy Family-St. Mary’s School
Holy Family-St. Mary’s is a very special place to go to school because it is where Catholic students can share and explore their faith. The teachers are amazing and helpful, everything ties into God, and every subject is fun to learn. As I leave this special place, I would most like to be remem-bered for being friendly because I always make new friends, being silly because when people are sad it cheers them up, and having fun because the students are fabulous and fun-loving. HFSM is the best!

Favorite Bible Verse and Memories by Audrey Aida Hung - I am a Disciple of Christ
For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for welfare
and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11
Don’t worry about the future! God knows just what is going to happen to us, and not to worry because whatever happens, God is always on our side and has a plan, so don’t burden yourself with worrying about the future, because He has marvelous plans for us, plans to help and not harm us. God plans to give us a future full of hope and joy, even if we think otherwise. I know that God has plans for me that are wonderful, like it says in the verse, “plans to give you a future and a hope.” I can also refer to the verse to help me if I feel like I can’t find anything positive to think about or my day isn’t exactly going according to plan and I feel far from the light. When God is speaking, ‘“For I know the plans I have for you” declares the LORD” I am comforted. God always has a plan and loves me very much.
My Memories of Holy Family-St. Mary’s School
When I leave Holy Family-Saint Mary’s School, I will be very sad and miss many the wonderful qualities that this special school has. It was in about third grade when I started to notice all of the fantastic features of Holy Family-St. Mary’s School. One element that makes this school so admirable is its warm, friendly, family-like atmosphere. One of the greatest things about this school is that no one really cares about how you look, or dress, but of what kind of person you are. Last but not least, is the strong Christian base our school provides and teaches about daily. I especially admire the emphasis on how much God loves you no matter what. Holy Family-Saint Mary’s School is one cool school, in my opinion! As I leave Holy Family-Saint Mary’s, I would want to be remembered for being kind, fair, and compassionate. Kind, because I always try to be nice to oth-ers and considerate of their thoughts and feelings. Fair, since no matter what, I strive to be fair to everyone in the school, include everyone, no matter the age, and treat everyone with equality. Last of all, compassion, one of the most im-portant qualities in a person. What compassion is, is thinking about other peo-ple’s feelings, treating everyone with the appreciation they deserve, and respect-ing others’ decisions.
