Welcome to St. George’s Episcopal Church

Welcome to worship. We pray that our time of worship will express praise and thanks to God for the gift of Christ, and help you live a more faithful, abundant life.

If you are a visitor, please know that we are delighted that you are here. We know that following the beautiful and ancient worship of the Episcopal Church is not always easy for those unfamiliar with the Anglican tradition. Please do not feel obligated to do anything but to enjoy the service reverently and expectantly.

At the time of The Holy Communion, all baptized Christians are welcome to receive the sacrament, regardless of age or denomination. Ushers will direct you to the altar rail, and you may return to your pew on an outside aisle. Gluten-free wafers are available from the intinction cup to the left of the lectern.

We invite newcomers to fi ll out a Connect card, found in the pew rack, and place it in the offering plate or hand it to a member of the clergy.

Nursery and childcare is available for children ages 6 weeks through 5 years. Please follow the signs to the nursery.

We are grateful for your presence.

This year, St. George’s special Christmas offering will be divided between Amputee Blade Runners, a nonprofi t that provides free running legs and sports specifi c equipment to amputees, and The Branch of Nashville, an organization that helps struggling families and individuals of any ethnicity and culture to fi nd paths to self-suffi ciency though food support, education (ESL courses), and job assistance.

BCP 212

O God, you make us glad by the yearly festival of the birth of your only Son Jesus Christ: Grant that we, who joyfully receive him as our Redeemer, may with sure confi dence behold him when he comes to be our Judge; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading Isaiah 9:2–7

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness—on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fi re. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Reader The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 96 1 Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the whole earth.2 Sing to the Lord and bless his Name; proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day.3 Declare his glory among the nations and his wonders among all peoples.4 For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; he is more to be feared than all gods.5 As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; but it is the Lord who made the heavens. 6 Oh, the majesty and magnifi cence of his presence! Oh, the power and the splendor of his sanctuary!7 Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples; ascribe to the Lord honor and power.8 Ascribe to the Lord the honor due his Name; bring offerings and come into his courts.9 Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; let the whole earth tremble before him.

Epistle Titus 2:11–14

The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are selfcontrolled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.

Hymn #78 vs. 1–3, 5: O little town of Bethlehem Forest Green

The Holy Gospel Luke 2:1-20 (KJV)All standing, a priest reads the Gospel, saying, The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was fi rst made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her fi rstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the fi eld, keeping watch over their fl ock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall fi nd the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, “Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.” And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

At the conclusion of the Gospel, the reader says The Gospel of the Lord.People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Homily The Rev. Clinton WilsonAll children are invited to come forward to the chancel steps.

The Nicene Creed (congregation stands) BCP 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!Above thy deep and dreamless sleepthe silent stars go by;yet in thy dark streets shineththe everlasting Light;the hopes and fears of all the yearsare met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary;and gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keeptheir watch of wondering love.O morning stars, togetherproclaim the holy birth!and praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth.

How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human heartsthe blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray;cast out our sin and enter in,be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angelsthe great glad tidings tell;O come to us, abide with us,our Lord Emmanuel!

Page 6: THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD THE HOLY EUCHARIST · PDF file · 2017-12-22Prelude on ‘The Holly and the Ivy’ H. Sumsion The Holy Boy ... Almighty God, to you all hearts are open,

true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucifi ed under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorifi ed. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins, We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People, Form I11 BCP 387

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one.

Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorifi ed by all people.

We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may fi nd favor in your sight.

Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress.

Give to the departed eternal rest;Let light perpetual shine upon them.

We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.Silence

Celebrant BCP 213

Almighty God, you have given your only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and to be born of a pure virgin: Grant that we, who have been born again and made your children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by your Holy Spirit; through our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom with you and the same Spirit be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving BCP 367The people remain standing.

Celebrant The Lord be with you.People And also with you.Celebrant Lift up your hearts.People We lift them to the Lord.Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

The Celebrant continuesIt is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; because you gave Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be born for us; who, by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, was made perfect Man of the fl esh of the Virgin Mary his mother; so that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become your children. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Celebrant and People

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, (Hymnal S128) Mathias heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The people may stand or kneel as the Celebrant continues

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made fl esh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Celebrant and People

We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

The Celebrant continues

And we offer our sacrifi ce of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifi ce, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctifi ed by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with the Blessed Virgin Mary and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the fi rstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Celebrant and People

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the BreadA period of silence is kept as the Celebrant breaks the consecrated bread. Then is sung:

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrifi ced for us; (Hymnal S152) Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day arr. Sir David Wilcocks

Tomorrow shall be my dancing day: I would my true love did so chanceTo see the legend of my play, To call my true love to my dance:Sing O my love, O my love, my love, my love; This have I done for my true love.

Then was I born of a virgin pure, Of her I took fl eshly substance; Thus was I knit to man’s nature, To call my true love to my dance:Sing O my love, O my love, my love, my love; This have I done for my true love.

In a manger laid and wrapp’d I was, So very poor, this was my chance, Betwixt an ox and a silly poor ass, To call my true love to my dance: Sing O my love, O my love, my love, my love;

This have I done for my true love.

Hymn #101: Away in a manger, no crib for his bed Cradle Song

Away in a manger, no crib for his bed,the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay,the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, but little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,and stay by my side until morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stayclose by me for ever, and love me I pray.Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, and fi t us for heaven to live with thee there.

Hymn #112: In the bleak midwinter Cranham

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,in the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain;heaven and earth shall fl ee away when he comes to reign:in the bleak midwinter a stable place suffi cedthe Lord God incarnate, Jesus Christ.

Angels and archangels may have gathered there, cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;but his mother only, in her maiden bliss, worshiped the beloved with a kiss.

What can I give him, poor as I am?If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;if I were a wiseman, I would do my part;yet what I can I give him give my heart.

Hymn #91: Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light Ermuntre dich

Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light, and usher in the morning;O shepherds, greet that glorious sight, our Lord a crib adorning. This child, this little helpless boy, shall be our confi dence and joy,the power of Satan breaking, our peace eternal making.

Hymn #115: What child is this, who laid to rest Greensleeves

What child is this, who, laid to rest,on Mary’s lap is sleeping?Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping?

RefrainThis, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing;haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary.

Why lies he in such mean estatewhere ox and ass are feeding?Good Christan, fear: for sinners herethe silent Word is pleading.

So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh, come, peasant, king, to own him;the King of kings salvation brings, let loving hearts enthrone him.

After Communion, the Celebrant says BCP 365 Let us pray.

Adult Classes Begin Sunday, January 7 at 10:05amRector’s Forum: The Bible that Jesus Loved, Lived, and Obeyed • The Rev.’s Leigh Spruill and Richard Kew • Johnson HallThe purpose of this course is to recognize that the only way to properly understand Jesus is in light of the Hebrew Bible. Yet it is often diffi cult for contemporary Christians to grasp what the Old Testament is about and how Jesus fi ts into it. While Jesus is not only the person toward whom the Hebrew Bible points, he is always there standing in the background, guiding and directing us as we seek to make sense of this library of books written over many centuries. Our hope is to deepen appreciation of the Old Testament as the foundation for the New Testament and how Jesus himself interprets his own life and mission in relationship to the Hebrew Scriptures. -RLS+
