THIS MONTH’S MEETING: Fri 7th

PRESIDENT’S PRATTLE
Hello Everyone,
First I must thank everyone for their good wishes to the incoming Committee and thank
Peter and the outgoing Committee Members for their work in keeping us busy and informed
in the past year.
The beginning of a new Probus Year and we are all hopefully engaged in the many activities
that our co-ordinators have lined up for us. Already this week I have been to a Show, Lunch at Appin, Travel Tales
and a Bus Trip, so time out is required to catch my breath.
I would like to remind everyone that Membership fees (payable to the treasurer), renewal and risk acceptance forms
(to go to Beverley) are both due before or at the next meeting.
I am looking forward to being able to get to know many more of you in the coming 12 months. We often tend to
confine ourselves to those we know and maybe need to widen our outlook and be more inclusive.
Caroline has some great guest speakers lined up for us so I look forward to our next meeting on 7th April 2017.
Yours in Probus,
Ellen Hill

GUEST SPEAKER:
April
Max Hitchins - is returning after a very successful presentation last year of 'The 5 most
important words in the history of the world'. Max will be have another very interesting topic for
us this month 'How to keep your mind as sharp as a Tack'. I am sure that he will keep us
entertained as usual.
HAPPY 21st BIRTHDAY:
April: Lorraine Ball, Mary Clifton
Welfare Cards and best wishes have been sent to Elaine Dean and Ray Cranfield who have been unwell
recently.
From our Roving Reporters
12 ANGRY MEN
25 of our Club Members witnessed this gripping court
room drama at the Campbelltown Theatre. The story
centres around 12 members of a jury deliberating over
the innocence of a teenager accused of murder. The
evidence points clearly to a guilty verdict but one man
decides to vote “not guilty” which forces the jury to
examine all the evidence from unexpected angles. This
brings out prejudices and bias between the men in the
jury room which then leads to tension and aggression.
The Campbelltown Amateur Theatre Group certainly
captivated the audience with a very professional and
thoroughly entertaining production. As usual after the
show Joyce had arranged for our now traditional Chinese Banquet at the “Flower Drum”.
Ken

St Patrick’s Day 2017, What to do on a miserable looking Friday morning, 17
th March 2017, St Patrick’s Day? Simple answer, join with 40
plus members and friends of our Probus Club and go out for drive in the country and have lunch.
At 8.00am the outlook for the day was not presenting very well, but we had paid our money so we took a chance.
After a reasonably light traffic run on the motorway system around Sydney we paused at Mt Wilberforce Park in
West Pennant Hills for a cuppa before continuing north ward to join the Great North Road in Dural and followed the
convict constructed line of road all the way to Wisemans Ferry.
It was here we gave Keith the first obstacle of the day when he drove the coach on to the Webb’s Creek Ferry to
cross the Hawkesbury River which was following strongly, as a result of all the rain over the preceding few days.
Safely back on “Terra Firma” we continued along a winding road to Wisemans Ferry and the Settlers Arms Inn.
We had time to stretch our legs and wander all the streets of the village (yes, both of them) before sitting down for
what can only be described as one of the BEST roast dinners we have ever enjoyed as a group.
Some of our photography buffs took many photos of the district, many of which have been uploaded on to various
member Facebook pages to be seen by all who have access to that website. Being St Patricks Day the obligatory “Irish” singing was led by our “birthday girl”, though as a choir I don’t think
we as a group will be invited to perform at the Sydney Opera House any time soon, leave that to those who do
actually have great singing voices.
Before departing we were given a small history lesson on the district by “mine host” Steve, the licensee of the
Settlers Arms.
The day was completed by returning to Wisemans Ferry, where again Keith had to negotiate the driving of the coach
both on and off the ferry.
Another great day was over when we finally arrived back in Narellan. Peter (photo by Sue)

A Point to Ponder
It has often been said that we should learn something new every day.
Unfortunately, many of us are of an age where, what we learn today we soon
forget. Give it a try anyway, that way you might learn something new again
tomorrow.
