AS WE GATHER Life has a certain rhythm. Worship has a certain rhythm to it as well. Each service begins and ends in a specific way—with the name of God. We begin worship with the name of the Trinity in the Invocation. We later end worship with the Benediction, “The Lord bless you and keep you . . .” (Numbers 6:22–27). This rhythm of worship can serve as a model for each new day. In his Small Catechism, Luther wrote, “In the morning when you get up, make the sign of the holy cross and say: ‘In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.’ ” Luther also suggests that in the evening when you go to bed, make the sign of the cross again as God’s name is spoken.” This New Year’s Day, what better way is there to conclude the old year and begin the new one than in the name of our Lord? WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN: 8:00am “Now Greet the Swiftly Changing Year” LSB 896 OPENING SONG: 10:30am “He Shall Reign Forevermore” (see video screens)

INVOCATION and OPENING SENTENCES P: O Lord, our Lord, C: how majestic is Your name in all the earth! P: The apostle Paul writes, C: “For as many of you as were baptized into

Christ have put on Christ.” P: We begin this new year with the name in which we

were baptized. In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. P: O Lord, our Lord, C: how majestic is Your name in all the earth! CONFESSION and ABSOLUTION P: We confess that in this past year, and every day, we fall short of living lives

that are worthy of our Lord’s name. We are baptized into Christ, and yet we live as though we do not know Christ. We are by nature sinful and unclean. Confessing our sin, let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ.

C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

P: “And at the end of eight days, when He was circumcised, He was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.” Jesus has kept the Law perfectly for you. The one named Jesus is your Savior from sin and death. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. INTROIT P: May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; C: may those who love Your salvation say continually,

“Great is the Lord!” P: Sacrifice and offering You have not desired, but You have given me an open

ear. C: Burnt offering and sin offering You have not required. P: Then I said, “Behold, I have come; C: in the scroll of the book it is written of me: P: I desire to do Your will, O my God; C: Your law is within my heart.” ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; C: may those who love Your salvation say continually,

“Great is the Lord!” SALUTATION and COLLECT P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray … Heavenly Father, C: You instructed Mary to call her Son Jesus. P: Grant that we may call upon the name of the one whose name means “the

Lord saves,” so that in Him we would have forgiveness and salvation; C: for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God,

now and forever. Amen.

Sit OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Numbers 6:22-27 The LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons,

‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: ‘“The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.” ‘“So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.”

L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

SONG: 10:30am only “Shine On Us” (see video screens) EPISTLE: Galatians 3:23-29 Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked

up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand HOLY GOSPEL: Luke 2:21 L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the second chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, He was named Jesus, the name the angel had given Him before He was conceived.

L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. APOSTLE’S CREED C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

About Holy Communion—The Lord’s Supper is celebrated here in the belief and glad confidence that our Lord gives us as He says, not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. If this is your belief, we welcome you to join us at the Lord’s table. Because we are called to examine ourselves before receiving the Lord’s Supper (I Corinthians 11:28-29), we encourage you to consider the questions on p. 329-330 in the front of the hymnal. If you are communing with us for the first time, or if you would like a fuller understanding of what we as Lutherans believe about the Lord’s Supper, please pick up a copy of “What is the Lord’s Supper?” at the Information table in the entryway. Please reserve the white grape juice cups in the center of the communion trays for those who for health reasons are unable to drink wine. If your health requires gluten-free wafers, they are available upon request. Speak to the pastor prior to the service. Our pastors are happy to speak to you further if you have any questions.

Sharing the Caring Christ with All People Matthew 2:13-23: After the visit of the wise men from the east to find and worship the newborn King of the Jews, Herod in a rage tried to kill the Child. God used faithful Joseph to take the Child and Mary to Egypt to flee from the wrath of Herod. May God also use us as faithful followers of Jesus by worshiping Him with our whole heart and sharing Him with those whose lives we touch.

What is "Prayer Shawl Ministry? "If you step into the Fellowship Hall and peek around the corner, you will see a small cabinet displaying several "prayer shawls." Shawls of many colors. These have been created by a small group of people from Trinity that meet on Tuesday mornings, after Bible study, from 11:30-1:00. With fellowship, and prayer, these shawls we like to call ..."Wrapped in His Love” ... are freely given to members requesting a warm, comforting shawl for a member of their family facing surgery, or grief, or any illness, or other reasons. They are prayed for by the group as they are being made and we wish them to go to whomever needs them. You are indeed invited to knit or crochet shawls with the group, or at home if that suits you better, and donate to this ministry. To REQUEST one of the shawls, you may call the office and share your request with Judy, 252-3670.

Calling All Singers Over 55 Years of Age The Good Shepherd Community has been selected to participate in the Growing Art-FULL program. This program is part of Aroha Philanthropies’ national research on the impact of quality arts programming for those over 55 and is administered through the Paramount Center for the Arts. Good Shepherd has room for up to 60 participants in the choir. The choir will meet for 10 weeks beginning January 11th. You will learn more than a few songs as you gather each week to sing, play instruments and learn about the art of good breathing – the key to good singing. Don’t worry if you feel you aren’t a good singer or your voice may have changed. Anybody can learn to sing and they can do it regardless of age. Desire, practice and good coaching are what it takes to become a good singer. Teaching artists, Marcelyn Smale and Garrett Lathe bring a lifetime of success leading all kinds of singers. If you are interested in participating in the choir, please call Darcy Ruesink at 320-259-3466. The choir sessions will be held on Wednesdays from 3:30 – 5:00 pm in the Shepherd Oak Dining Room, 310 13th Street N, Sauk Rapids. We hope you will join us.
