The Nalanda Certificate Program in Contemplative Psychotherapy

The Nalanda Certificate Program in Contemplative Psychotherapy is a historic program offering unprecedented cross-training in four discrete meditation techniques, direct access to world pioneers in the field, and an ongoing process of mentoring and community, that will immerse you in the inspiring new field of contemplative neuropsychology. The full two-year Program offers an intensive, step-by-step learning experience integrating mindfulness and four progressive systems of Buddhist psychology and meditation, with the most promising breakthroughs in contemporary neuroscience, health psychology, and psychotherapy.

Our Faculty

Our faculty is led by world pioneers Robert Thurman, Sharon Salzberg, Richard Davidson, Roshi Joan Halifax, Pilar Jennings, Miles Neale, Joe Loizzo Nalanda Institute Director and Estudios Contemplativos Director Koncha Pinos-Pey, the most complete and expert team of contemplative researchers and clinicians ever assembled.

Whether you're a psychotherapist, health professional, coach, or educator, the Nalanda Certificate Program will provide you with all the knowledge and skills you'll need to weave the full spectrum of contemplative insights and skills, together with current neuropsychology and psychotherapy, into the daily fabric of your professional practice and personal life. Last but not least, the Program will also connect you with a community of congenial mentors and like-minded peers, who can provide a vital network for lifelong inspiration, learning and development.

Year One

Year One of the Certificate Program provides a comprehensive foundation for integrating contemplative psychology and meditation practice into contemporary psychotherapy, and related caregiving fields. This nine-month Program prepares participants to build mindfulness practice into psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral therapies, and to build loving-kindness practice into object-relational, interpersonal, and family therapies.

Being awarded the Nalanda Certificate in Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy reflects the completion of all requirements of the first year program, including the initial retreat, coursework, supervision, and daily meditation practice.

Year Two

Year Two of the Certificate Program provides a comprehensive foundation for integrating the social psychology and meditation practices of the Nalanda tradition into contemporary psychotherapy, and related caregiving fields.

This nine-month Program prepares participants to build compassion-training practices like self-analysis and giving-and-taking into self-psychology and transpersonal psychology, and to build role-modeling imagery and sublimation practices into guided imagery, narrative therapy, somatic therapy, deep affect therapy, and gestalt therapy. The Nalanda Certificate in Compassion-Based Psychotherapy reflects completion of all the requirements of the second year program, including the initial retreat, coursework, supervision, and daily meditation practice.

2015 Schedule

Retreat will be held at Barcelona, in the end of March 2015

Weekly classes are held on Thursday evenings at Tibet House from XX starting April 25, 2014 through April 2015.

Each Year of the Program includes:

• An initial 4-day weekend retreat in Barcelona • Weekly 3-hour evening class meetings at Tibet House • Weekly in-session meditation practice, opportunity practice leading meditations, group check-in

process, and didactic experiences with our rich and diverse expert faculty including pioneers in the field

• World class meditation masters (Year 1) and (Year 2) to provide intensive instruction in retreats and ongoing instruction throughout each year

Program Expectations

Participants are expected to attend all retreats and meetings, complete all home-study, and to develop and/or deepen a daily meditation practice throughout each year. Diligent study and daily contemplative practice are both essential to positive personal and professional development, informing how broadly and deeply you can learn, and incorporate what you learn in your life and work.

Both years of the Nalanda Certificate Program also require active participation in retreats and classes, make-up of any missed classes (via audio recordings), and completion of all reading assignments, reflection papers, and of a capstone project, before the Certificate can be awarded.

Distance Learning

For those who live outside of the Barcelona metropolitan area and wish to participate in our Program, we offer an online distance learning option. Students who choose the distance learning option are encouraged to attend the retreat, are welcome to attend any of the live classes, and will have complete access to all of the weekly lectures via online video and downloadable audio recording. Distance learning participation will not result in a certificate.
