The Nahant Harbor Review September 2013 Welcome Back to School from the Nahant Police Department by Chief Robert C. Dwyer As summer draws to an end, back-to-school season is in full swing. Safety should be a priority for the entire community as our children head back to school this fall. It is important for our parents and the community to stay up-to-date on proper safety precautions and share this information with their children to keep them safe throughout the Nahant school year. Whether your children walk, take the bus or ride their bicycle to school, it is very important that the children take proper steps to ensure their safety. Teach your children safe habits no matter how they get to school. If your child decides to walk, he or she should walk with a friend, always walk on the sidewalk, cross the street either at a corner or intersection, always look left- right-left before crossing the street and never run or jump out in front of a parked car. If your child chooses the bicycle option, he or she should always wear a properly fitted helmet, understand and follow the rules of the road. Last but not least and most common the school bus. Riding the school bus is the safest form of transportation for your children. It is important for the parents to remind their children to safely exit the bus. The children must be reminded that the flashing school bus lights and stop sign are ignored by some motorists. The children have to pay attention to the traffic when crossing the street after exiting the school bus. Behavior on the school bus is extremely important; explain to your child that the bus driver needs his full attention when operating the bus and he shouldn’t have to deal with behavioral issues. When on the bus, find a seat, sit down, no loud talking and be respectful to others. Without getting into too much detail, Bullying will not be tolerated either in the school or on the bus. Starting in September the Nahant Police Officers will conduct traffic enforcement in the area of Castle and Flash Road to ensure that our children in the community safely return to school. I ask all residents to slow down in all school zones; do not exceed the posted speed limit of 20 MPH. It’s imperative that we pay attention while operating a motor vehicle in a school zone or otherwise. Officer Conti is our School Resource Officer he can be reached during the day at 781-581-1212 should have any further question on school safety. The Nahant Police Department is looking forward to another year working together with the Johnson School administration making our school environ- ment the safest on the North Shore. In closing I wish the children and school administrators a safe and pro- ductive school year. Remember if you see something say something to the police. This will keep our children and the entire community safe. From The Editor Many Nahant residents have commented to me these almost two years how much they miss the “little paper.” So I am happy to announce that Seaside Busi- ness Services will print a new Nahant Harbor Review, begin- ning with a September 1st issue! This paper will be distributed through local Nahant businesses, including the Equitable Bank. Sales Director, Sally Donais, a Nahant resident, has received a very enthusiastic response from local businesses and individuals about our return to print! So most of our regular advertisers are back! Without their support there would be no newspaper. Remem- ber, this paper will only exist in printed form as long as the Nahant community supports it. Otherwise, it will be gone for- ever. Nahant’s Oldest CitizenOn Sunday afternoon, August 25th,

with many family and friends in atten-dance, Town Moderator David Conlin, awarded Nahant’s Boston Post Cane toMarie Lea Conley, of Desmond Drive, asshe reaches her 98th birthday. She is theoldest person on the Town Clerk’s “Listof Residents.”

In 1909, the gold-headed caneinscribed “Presented by the Boston Postto the Oldest Citizen of Nahant, Mass., tobe Transmitted,” was one of the 431canes the newspaper distributed to townsthroughout New England, with theunderstanding that the selectmen were toaward the cane to the oldest living man intheir community. In 1930, women, also, became eligible for the honor.

In Essex County, only seventeen of the twenty-seven canes given out in 1909are known to still be in existence. Fortunately, Nahant’s Cane has survived andcontinues to be awarded. In recent years, the cane is presented and then kept ondisplay at the Historical Society, while a framed scroll is awarded to the recipient as apermanent keepsake, with the community’s congratulations and best wishes!

Welcome Back!

No one knows the results of something new. The popular Law of Unin-tended Consequences rules whenever new ground is broken.

The absence of a printed Harbor Review was a loss to the community thatwas deeply felt. Despite its online presence, the paper was a ghost of its formerself.

I feel certain that the Editor intended to advance into the digital world. However, the paper’s audience showed reluctance to follow. Perhaps thereaders did not think of this move as progress.

Of as great value to a community newspaper as the readers, are thecontributors. The real value of the paper is that it allows neighbors to talk witheach other, fostering relationships within the community. The print formatprovides a traditional way of filling the role of communicator.

Welcome back, Harbor Review. I feel as though I am reunited with an oldfriend. —Daniel A. deStefano

Rally Day is on the Horizon, Sunday, Sept. 8th

It’s always fun to run into our Sunday School kids during the summer andoutside the classroom. When I run into one at beach it seems so out of contextthey’re not sure it’s me, and this summer I’ve had the chance to see almost allof them at one point or another.

Rally Day, the day we all come back together is on the horizon. Plans arebeing made, curriculum considered. Soon, I will start cleaning up classroomsand getting ready for a new year. How fast the summer seems to have flown!

I look forward to our annual Rally Day picnic, held the Sunday afterLabor Day. Hot dogs, hamburgers and rolls and condiments will be provided.Anyone who would like to bring a salad, or dessert, please follow-up on thaturge and we’ll make it a party. I hope to see you all there, young and old, as wekick off a new Sunday School year and bring a little noise back to the church, after the serene quietness that only comes with summer.

— Chris Stevens

Car Guy Joe Moccia has Great Luck with theNumber Two

Nahant resident, Joe Moccia, 73 Little Nahant Road, has been collectingand driving classic cars for over 40 years. He hit the “Collector Car Lottery”this summer, when his two classic cars won best in show awards in two con-secutive weeks, in June. His 1969 Corvette Stingray won Best in ShowPeople’s Choice, out of 300 Corvettes on Corvette Day, at Larz AndersonMuseum of Transportation on June 9th. On the following Sunday, his 1960Volkswagen Beetle won Best in Show Volkswagen, at The Museum’s GermanCar Day Lawn Event. Two cars, two weeks, two best in show awards (not“two” shabby).

Joe is happy to share his knowledge of collecting with friends and neigh-bors. He is happy to help anyone who would like to find a classic car for fun orinvestment. The prices of some classic cars have doubled in value, over thepast few years. Joe always says, “You can’t take your stock certificate, or CDfor a Sunday drive.”

You can check out the summer lawn events at the Museum of Transporta-tion at Larzanderson.org, or to tour the Museum to see “America’s Oldest CarCollection.”
