he perception of home care in this countryhas hit an all time low with cases of abuse, malnutrition and cruelty frequently reported in

Editor’sMessage

am so glad that youmanaged to find me – I

admit I was a bit concernedthat you might not have. Myhusband thought this newEditorʼs Message page wasthe result of the instructionsfor the new Wii going to myhead (you know the onewhere it says “Make sureyou have plenty of room allaround you so that you wonʼtbump into anyone”). Well, whilst I do sometime veertowards narcissism, the ideafor the change was more todo with our designerʼssuggestion that we shouldgive the contents page arevamp. So hats off to Mattwho has once again broughtabout a change for the goodby giving our highly valuedcontributors the space theydeserve on page 3. Myrants, witterings and generaltosh and nonsense beingsensibly relegated to page 6but I do hope you will stopon by to catch up!

So, what did you get up toover Christmas and NewYear? Ours seem to happenin a dizzying whirlwind ofvisitors punctuated by foodand drink and worryingabout whether the recyclingbin was going to cope with

all the bottles and empty toypackets. My favouritepresents were two books, one of which was the SteveJobs biography, however Iwas unsure of whether tothank or slap my mum andmy mum-in-law both ofwhom presented me withoodles of face cream! Iunusually made and (thusfar) have kept to my NYresolutions of two “drynights” a week and twosessions of Zumba. Every day we are hearing on the news aboutthe exceptional amounts of people who aresuffering from a flu virus. Doctors havereported record numbers of patients visitingtheir surgeries over the festive period and intothe New Year. What is ʻflu? There are manyidentified and unidentified viruses which aregiven the name ʻflu. Viral attacks that involvefever, tiredness, coughs, colds, muscular painand exhaustion are all likely to be given thislabel. When you feel the onset of flu, treatmentneeds to be quick; aimed at raising immunitylevels as well as combating the virus.

If you are shivery and cold, and feel that youhave the onset of something more, take a warmbath to which you should add the following oils :Tea tree 5 drops, Lavender 2 drops and Thyme2 drops. Just lie back, inhale the steamyvapours and soothe away the discomfort. Afteryour bath massage your whole body with ablend of the following oils: Tea tree 2 drops andEucalyptus 3 drops diluted in 1 teaspoon ofolive oil or sweet almond oil – and then off tobed.

For chest congestion, a steam inhalationtreatment prepared with basil, pine, and/ or teatree oil can help to clear mucus and easebreathing. For nasal congestion, add a coupleof drops of Eucalyptus to a tissue and placebeside you on the pillow; you will soon find yourairways clearing.

To keep your bedroom free from airborneinfections, add 2 of drops of Tea tree and 2drops of Lavender to the water reservoir of adiffuser, light a tea light and allow to burn for an

hour or so. Fumigate the house with oils to helpprevent the spread of flu. Put 2-3 drops on atissue and place on a radiator to evaporate oradd 10 drops of essential oils to a small plantspray filled with water. Spray the roomfrequently.

i AJ here again and a Happy New year to youall, I hope that 2012 will be all that your heartdesires it to be. Well given that we are still in

the throngs of winter, I will be sticking to heart-warming recipes until we turn the corner. I haveasked our charming editor BB about getting anemail address so that I can get some feedback fromyou; I hope we will have one in place by the Febedition.

Split Pea SoupYou will need 225g dried split peas, 1.2 litres offresh veg stock, 2 medium chopped onions, 1 medcarrot, 1 small sweet potato peeled and diced, 1sprig of thyme, 3 clove of garlic. Method: Cover thesplit peas with cold water and soak them overnight.Drain well. In a large saucepanplace split peas with thestock, onions, carrot, and sweet potato, thyme and garlic.Bring slowly to theboil, and then gentlysimmer for 11/4 – 11/2hrs or until the peasare very soft. Allow coolingslightly remove the thyme andgarlic, then using either a hand blender or for bestresults a food processor blend until smooth. Pourback into a rinsed pan with thyme, season with s&p.Gently reheat and serve hot and garnish with a swirlof fromage frais, natural yogurt, or soured cream.Including overnight soaking prep time shouldbe approx 10min. Serves 4 withapprox 210 calories per portion.

Beef BourguignonYou will need 575g of chucksteak or skirt with the fatremoved, cut into cubes. 25gplain flour, 3-5 tbs oil, 100g rindless diced streaky bacon, 2onions sliced, 1 clove garlic crushed,

100g sliced mushrooms, 300mldry red wine (Burgundy),beef stock, bouquet garni,2 sprigs of thyme, freshparsley for garnish.Preheat the oven gasMk 1, 275f (140c) Heatfrying pan. Coat thecubes of meat in theflour; pour oil into panand brown the meat andthen transfer to acasserole. In the frying pancook the diced bacon in oil, untilgolden and then add to the meat. Inthe pan, sauté onion, garlic, until soft, addmushrooms cooking for approx 3 min. Place thevegetables in the casserole and pouf in the red

wind and beef stock. Add the bouquet garniand cover. Place in the oven and cook

for 1 1/2hrs or until the meat is tender.Prep time approx 20min. Serves 4,approx 515 calories per portion.Serve with seasonal greens andbrown rice or wild rice.

To finish I suggest an apple crumble asBramley are reasonably priced now. Chefʼs tipwhen cooking apples do not add water to the pan.Apples naturally contain a lot of water and try usinga combination of 2 to 1 cinnamon & ginger to addflavour. I always cook my crumble separately and Iadd jumbo oats to create more texture. By cooking

the crumble separately, you will produce a morecrunchy topping, you will have to take the

topping out of the oven from time to timein order to crush and stop it fromclumping together. What you arelooking for is a biscuit texture. Cookat 160c. Until next time this is AJuntil next time…

So, you are looking to get fit; to run amarathon through the desert carrying fourencyclopaedias in a rucksack. It is going to betough, but you feel you can do it. From thestart January you proclaim your body will be atemple to be fed with leaves, pulses and fruit. You will have a diet that is high inpolyunsaturates and omega oils and low insaturates. You decide to throw out your fryingpan and buy a steamer; to blend your ownsmoothies and grow sprouting beans in aplastic tower; to banish alcohol and substitutecelery for kebabs; that you will give up yourbus pass and buy a bicycle and do 25 lengthsof the local swimming pool before work andZumba in the evening when you are not atBikram Yoga.

Are you exhausted from reading this?! Theseideas, generally hatched in the hazy fug ofpostprandial Christmas afternoons areseemingly perfect but once the brandy wearsoff we quickly come to realise that they aresingularly perfect in their fantasy.

Of course, as a GP it would be churlish of meto pass up an opportunity to encourage peopleto think about any lifestyle tweaks that couldimprove their chances of winning the healthlottery. And the New Year is as good a time asany for a little introspection. But, all thisstarvation, boot camp drilling and general self-enforced misery throughout what are alreadythe bleakest of months of the year is enoughto make you ill.

Dare I say it, I might even be a bit radical in myapproach. I plan to revive an old fashionedmantra that the nuts in the highlycommercialised world of health extremismseem to have forgotten all about.Unfortunately, it doesnʼt sell health magazines

or diet plans and wonʼt make me a star of myown exercise DVD.

This is a motto that I wholeheartedly embrace- ʻEverything in moderationʼ. It may not besexy and it is most certainly not going to makeme rich, even if I did get round to writing abook all about it. But give it a chance and itmight just make you happier and healthier.Make the little things count. Take the stairsinstead of the lift. Have an apple instead of aKitKat. The next day, have the KitKat, butwalk home. Set yourself some achievabletargets: one glass of wine instead of two –buya 175ml glass instead of a bucket-sized 250mlglass, and make it last. A grilled chicken kebabinstead of a greasy doner; forgo the thick crustpizza for the thin. And share it, with a salad!

You may not see a change overnight, but yourfriends visiting in June will. And mostimportantly it is sustainable and wonʼt feel tooarduous. And you can still eat kebabs.Occasionally.

StyleFashion&

Fashion|elcome to 2012…Want to know whatʼssetting the trend this 2012? The Ethnic

feel with earthy tones is very much thetheme for the start of the 2012 season.Blazers are a must to add to your wardrobeand there are a number of different stylesout there ranging from the high end designertags to high street. I particularly like the AllSaintsCambridgeBlazer(£175.00).Blazers canimplementdifferent looks, with the day lookachieved bymatching jeansand a T-Shirtwith desert bootsor brogues; a quick change to a pair ofChinos with a button down shirt and loafersgives you the evening look. To stand out addsimple touches such as accessories andbelts to create a uniquely personal style.

Barbour jackets are timeless and you donʼthave to be a country gent to wear one asthese ubiquitous jackets come in a range ofcolours and styles. I love the original Barbourjacket and highly recommend having a lookat Chelsea Sports Quilted Jacket fromAsos.com (£119.00). If youʼre not a Barbourfan then consider the traditional Trench Coatand you donʼt have to splash out for one atBurberry, when you can pick one up atwww.uniqlo.com for a jaw-dropping £69.00.

To complete the countrygent look team it up witha flap cap, check outwww.hatsandcaps.co.ukwhere prices start from£14.95.

Firstly Happy New Year, I find this time ofyear very exciting, a good time for

making plans for the future. So with this inmind I thought Iʼd put together a list of my 10essentials for running a business (5 thismonth & 5 more next month). This isespecially for those of you thinking ofstarting your own business this year. Thislist does not include the obvious things like acomputer & an internet connection, they gowithout saying.

1. A Website: Either investsome money & have a sitedone by a professional (I canrecommend good webdesigners) or try & setsomething up yourself onWord press, itʼs relatively easy to use butjust takes time & patience. Whatever youdecide to do just start simple & build on it ata later date.

2. Social Media: Facebook,

Twitter: These days having aFacebook page & a Twitteraccount are essential & fun!Social Media is essential forgetting traffic to your website& a fantastic way to makepeople aware of what youʼredoing. Again start simple &build as you go, you will soonget the feel for it.

3. Linkedin: You can useLinkedin as much or as littleas you like but itʼs reallyworth being on there, ifanyone is thinking ofemploying you they will morethan likely look you up on Linkedin & itʼs

also a great way to link up with people youmeet, use it as a contacts list.

4. A designated work space: If possible setup your own space, thereʼs a lot to do whenyou start a business & the last thing youneed is to spend time searching for things.Be organised from the outset, set up files asyou go & donʼt let everything pile up, thisincludes the filing on your computer, donʼtsave everything to your desk top!

5. Dropbox: Set up a free Dropbox account& save your files to it. Continuing from theprevious point, be organised so you can findthings at short notice. Once your files are inDropbox you can access them from anycomputer or other device.

hen I was a child my family adopted a coupleof rescues from the local pound. The visitwas remarkably straight forward, we picked

the ones we wanted and then we went home withthem. Todayʼs rehoming procedures aresignificantly more involved but what is really strikingis the make up of the returned and neglected dogslining the kennels. On my visit in the Eighties therewas a veritable cornucopia of dogs to choose from, tall ones, short ones, curly ones, bald ones, youngand old. Todayʼs rehoming centres are dominatedby one dog; the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and theircrosses. The RSPCA states that up to 80% of dogsin their rescue centres are Staffies or their crosses, having worked in one of the largest it feels likethatʼs a conservative estimate.

So whathave theseb e a u t i f u l ,loving dogsdone todeserve thisfate? Well,n o t h i n g .They havebeen veryunfortunateto haveb e e npicked upby a section of society that breeds them for status, crossing them with illegal breeds such as pit bulls toincrease their size and aggression. The problemwith these idiots is that they couldnʼt have picked anicer dog to abuse. In my time at the RSPCAvaccinating, neutering and treating rehomed dogs aStaffordshire Bull Terrier never even came close tobiting me. We sometimes muzzled them becausethe licking was getting a bit too vigorous but thatwas about as much danger as I was exposed to,death by slobber! Staffordshire Bull Terriers one of

the most trustworthy breeds with children, havingbeen called the nanny dog in their earlierincarnation as one of the most popular family dogsin Britain. It is somewhat in their nature to show dogto dog aggression but this is in far larger part due tohow they are raised than their breed. Rehomingcentres like Battersea have very rigorousassessment criteria so you can be confident thatthe dog youʼre getting from them is no more or lesslikely to be a problem than any other rehomed dog.

The routes of the problem lie with unscrupulousprivate owners breeding puppies for quick cash. Ican tell you categorically that there are nophysiological advantages to letting a bitch have alitter. These puppies bred in flats with little or nothought given to the welfare of the bitch provide aconstant stream of dogs keeping the rescue centresoverflowing, simply thrown away when they are nolonger convenient. For a vet this is absolutely heartbreaking.

In my opinion there are two elements to the controlof this problem; banning the sale of puppies overthe internet, there is simply no reason to spend£300 buying a Staffie with dubious provenance, rehome one instead! I am certain these hobbybreeders will no longer do it if there is no financialincentive. The other aspect is more difficult, weneed to change our attitudes. I think a big reasonputting people off rehoming a Staffie is fear of beingjudged by other dog owners. Well we should judgeStaffie owners. We should judge them as beingthoughtful and benevolent, big hearted enough togive a dog who craves nothing more than humanaffection a loving home despite the prejudicesagainst them.

THE IRON LADY(6th January). The long awaited biopic ofloved and loathed former PrimeMinister Margaret Thatcher. The film portrays an ageingThatcher (Meryl Streep) battlingdementia and recallingmoments from her life, meetingher husband Denis (JimBroadbent) and forging one of the most controversial political histories ofmodern times. There’s been some controversy over the generous portrayalof Thatcher, and whilst those severely against The Iron Lady may want tostay away, it isn’t exactly a damning portrayal, and often feels too much likeOscar bait to be truly compelling. Nevertheless, Streep is astonishinglygood, almost worth the price of admission alone.

CP Rating:

GOON(6th January). From the political arena to the Hockeyarena, as Sean William Scott (“AmericanPie’s” Stiffler) play a sincere, caring but dimwitted young man whose only talent in life isbeing able to give, and take, a punch. He isenlisted by a struggling hockey team as a‘goon’ (a player whose sole purpose is tobeat up opposition players), turning theteam’s fortunes around with his selflessspirit. Whilst it is hardly taxing on the brains,“Goon” wins you over with 90 minutes ofunashamedly dumb comedy. Scott is asurprisingly pleasant lead, and the violenceis in keeping with the movie’s title (althoughsome scenes may not be for thesqueamish).

SHAME (13th January).Former Turner Prize winner Steve McQueen (no, not thatone) follows up the success of his debut drama “Hunger”with “Shame”, again starring man of the moment Michael Fassbender (“X-Men: First Class”,“Inglourious Basterds”). Fassbender playsBrandon, a disaffected New Yorker whostruggles to contain his sexual addiction. Asthings begin to spiral out of control, his recklesssister (Carey Mulligan) comes to visit, unearthing a past which he would rather forget, and spiralling his life out of control. Breath-taking, it certainly won’t be for everyone (you see far more of Fassbender than you everthought you would!) but it’s a superbly acted, mature drama that taps into modern societyand it’s isolating nature.

CP Rating:

WAR HORSE (13th January).Steven Spielberg returns to live action to direct this story based on the novel by MichaelMorpurgo, and popularised by the West End play. The story centres on Albert (JeremyIrvine), a Devonshire farm boy who forms a strong bond with Joey, a horse bought by hisdrunken father (Peter Mullan) to work the land. After training him, Albert is mortified whenJoey is sold to the army at the outbreak of World War One. Joining the army himself whenJoey is reported missing, and hoping to find his old friend, both see the full horror of war, andboth use the strength of friendship to get through it.More magic from Spielberg, and although at times itmay be a little too saccharine, it’s a beautifully told storythat never flinches from the horrors of war, but alsoreveals the humanity of those trapped in it.

s well as for aesthetics purposes , andreasons of privacy, window coverings aremore and more being considered in the

context of energy conservation. The British Blindsand Shutters Association - of which Flamingo Blindsare long-time members - are the prime motivatorsof the Shade Specifer Project, which will shortly becompleted to provide , primarily architects andbuilding companies, technical information whichwill enable them to specify the most cost effectiveproducts to reduce solar gain , and also insulate. Itis established that the correct product will have arelatively short pay back time , when the use of airconditioning and heating are considered. Thegovernment consults the B.B.S.A with regards toenergy conservation.

This objective should also be factored into domesticsituations, where wood Venetian blinds, plantationshutters and duette shades offer considerablebenefits in both the reduction in solar gain and theretention of heat generated within the home. For

example ,Luxaflex Architella Duette blind is madewith a honeycomb type material with 3 layers offabric, which maintains an air pocket to provide thefeatures any customer would appreciate.

Awnings should also be considered in relation toenergy conservation, as if the heat is preventedform reaching the glazing, expensive airconditioning use can be massively reduced.Conversely , foam filled exterior shutters , seenextensively on the continent, can be used to bringdown heating bills and eliminate drafts, whilst alsoproviding great solar gain reductions in summer.Duette shades used in conservatories are a primeexample of how this works........and Flamingo areoffering 15% discount for Duette conservatoryblinds ordered before February the 26th.

All of the products referred to , plus many more, canbe seen in Flamingo Blinds' Potters Bar showroom. With more than 30 years experience, we can safelysay, " we know what we are talking about " !

Kitchen MakeoversInteriors|o, weʼve sweated in our old run downkitchens to create the perfect Christmasdinner but now itʼs time to give that poor

old overworked kitchen a new yearmakeover!

Maybe youʼre thinking of going for thecomplete overhaul with even an extension tohouse this new room or maybe youʼre justlooking for easy ways to give everythingback itʼs new kitchen ʻsparkleʼ?

If youʼre thinking of replacing units, keep aneye out for stores selling ex-displays andalways consider cheaper suppliers as oftenthere can be little difference in the finish. Youcould consider having plain unitsprofessionally spray painted to produce aunique colour finish and if you are happywith the layout of your old kitchen, eitherreplace the doors or have them painted.Keep an eye out for unusual handles; ifyouʼve become bored of door knobs considerdrilling a second hole in doors to fit a barhandle. (Remember that you canʼt do this ondrawers that have had knobs fitted as thereʼllbe a hole in the middle of the panel).Freestanding units allow you to have achange around when you get bored and totake them with you if you move.

Consider a change of colour scheme bypotentially changing tiles, worktops or simplyby adding a bold paint colour to walls. Evensome fresh new accessories can make anenormous difference. New tea towels, pictures, crockery or a new kitchen clock. Ifyou have a dining table in your kitchen, maybe some new chairs or some chair padsin a favourite fabric with some different tablemats? For aquick ʻspruceupʼ try thisseasonʼsmustard tonesor brightorange withsomecoloured glassand boldplasticaccessories maybe mixed with grey? Foranother fashionable look try retro floralprints, spots and stripes with enamelwareand wood and possibly some bunting strungup for decoration.

Whatever you decide, happy shopping!

TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS AROUNDSCHOOLS

You may have received by post a consultationpaper from the Council detailing their proposals forintroducing 20 mph speed limit zones aroundschools. Alternatively click on to the Councilwebsite, www.enfield20mph.co.uk. There areseven of these zones but the one of interest toWinchmore Hill Residents is that for St. Paulʼs CEPrimary School and Keble Preparatory School.

This zone is bounded by Station Road, RingwoodWay, Shrubbery Gardens, Green Lanes, GreenDragon Lane, Hadley Way, Houndsden Road,Church Hill and a loop south around The Green. Ifthis is strictly for the benefit of the school childrenit appears to be a larger area than necessary withthe schools in question eccentrically placedtowards the south within the zone. St. PaulʼsSchool is very close to the boundary of the zone atRingwood Way and Shrubbery Gardens. In orderto ensure vehicles do not exceed 20 mph speed, cushions or humps are introduced in all roadswithin the zone and double yellow lines added orextended at some road junctions.

While the Association is in favour of these speedrestrictions in principle we believe they should bemore tightly drawn around the schools and moreconsideration given to eliminating the greaterhazard of cars congregating around the schoolsfor the dropping off and collection of children in themorning and afternoon. Please respond to this consultation paper.

KING EASTON SITE

As you are all well aware construction workcommenced on the King Easton site in the Autumnbut to alternative designs which had been

submitted to the Council by the new developer.

Unfortunately planning approval had not beengiven to these alternative designs and thereforeconstruction work was deemed illegal. The Councilput a “stop” notice on the work pendingdiscussions and residents will have noticed thatlittle work was carried out in December.

The Conservation Area Advisory Group, Southgate& District Civic Trust and the ResidentsAssociation saw no reason to alter the designsfrom those prepared by the original developer andapproved by the Council. To date the newdeveloper has submitted revised plans for theterrace of houses in the middle of the site and asthese are now very similar to the original approvedplans, approval has now been given to proceed onthis section, with qualifications on certain windowpositions.

We await the developers revised proposals for thesingle houses fronting on to Station Road at oneend and Compton Road at the other.

appy New Year to all readers of the financecolumn and what a year 2012 promises to be;the Olympics, the Queenʼs Diamond Jubilee,

Euro 2012, England versus West Indies and SouthAfrica at cricket and many other wonderful events. Ijust wonder when we are going to have time towork! But before we move on to 2012 it got methinking what will we remember of 2011, after all wedid have 365 days of it, one after another!

Each one of us will have our own personal highsand lows and to a degree our sense of well beingwill be dependent on the volatility between thosehighs and lows. The same is true for the stockmarket and 2011 will be characterised as one ofunusual volatility. One day up 2% the next daydown 3% and so on. If we look at the FTSE 100share index the bestperforming share was Shire,a specialty biopharmaceuticalcompany which was up38.17% on the year. Theworst performing share pricewas that of Essar Energy, alow cost energy companyfocussed on India that wasdown a whopping 64.38%!

The FTSE 100 index had a range of 1314 pointsfrom peak to trough during the year end upsomewhere in the middle, thatʼs one heck of a lot ofvolatility.

The question Iʼm often asked is “What can you doto help me sleep at night when all this uncertainty isgoing on?”

Dependent on our clientʼs attitude towards risk ourasset allocation model identifies asset classes, based on stochastic modelling, in order to identifyan appropriate investment portfolio.

To support these investments we offer an enhancedrisk management service to our clients; LyndhurstPrime Fund Management. This utilises our wealthmanagement account and enables us to managetheir funds in more detail through a fund trackingsystem.

All of the funds within the clientʼs portfolio aremonitored on a regular basis. The funds prices aretracked against a particular investment index andby monitoring the fund prices against theseaverages, buy and sell signals are identified.

By utilising this process, clear indicators areidentified so that when the price moves through theindicators, gains can be locked in and losses canbe minimised. Back tracking of our funds against

these indices have shown thatportfolio performance can beenhanced and volatility significantlyreduced allowing our clients tosleep at night.

If that all sounds rather complicatedit isnʼt really, a demonstration at ouroffice will show you how you couldbenefit from the service.

So what of 2012, a recent survey by a major bankhighlighted that 58% of home owners never changetheir mortgage except when they move and couldsave a considerable amount of money by re-mortgaging. Our experts are available for a freeconsultation in our Barnet office and will take yourcall on 0208 4475592

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keepup repayments on your mortgage.

eorgeous George on getting older, and his new Oscar-tipped movie“The Descendants”.

Once again, the whole world is in love withGeorge Clooney. Heʼs wowed us with various hits(and the odd miss) over the years, and 2012 is setto be all about the Oscar buzz surrounding hisnew film “The Descendants”. He plays a richbusinessman in Hawaii who must reconnect withhis family after his wife suffers a horrific accident.“Itʼs a tricky piece, the movie starts with the deathof your wife and then it is a sort of coming-of-agefilm, unfortunately the person coming of age is a50-year old man” he explains.

The film is strongly tipped to land Clooney anotherOscar, but the 50-year-old is dismissive of thehype. “It is a very nice thing to say and it is theresult of a lot of other people doing a lot of otherwork too” he says. “But Idonʼt remember who winsawards, and I have wonone, or two. What Iremember is movies, I reallylove movies. So Iam not soconcerned withspeculation aboutwinning thingsbecause I enjoybeing in films thatlast more than theiropening weekend. That is my goal.”

Heʼs been in the business for a long time now, andhe credits his famous Aunt, singer RosemarieClooney, as his inspiration. “My aunt was as big assinger as you could be in 1950 but by 1960 shewas forgotten about and she didnʼt become less ofa singer” he recalls. “And then she had a nicecomeback. I had a great lesson in how little it hasto do with you and how much it has to do withother elements, including luck.”

Finally, one black mark on the actorʼs CV is“Batman & Robin”, the 1997 disaster often held as

one of the worst movies ever. What was hethinking? “As an actor, you just take jobs” he says,

smiling. “At that point, I had been on a TVseries, done a lot of TV series, and I had done a couple of filmsand I was very excited. I called myfriends saying, ʻI got Batman!ʼʻWhat part are you going to play?ʼ,ʻBatman!!!…ʼ, ʻWow!ʼ. I didnʼt knowit was, ʻYeah, Iʼm in (notorious 80ʼsflop) ʻIshtarʼ, Woohoo!!ʼ And so since

then I have really tried to focus on the bestscreenplays as possible. You can really protectyourself as an actor by working with really goodpeople. You can hide a lot of flaws along theway….”

What did James think?

Believe the hype! Whilst it is sombre, AlexanderPayne follows up the wonderful “Sideways” with atouching story, spear-headed by another career-defining performance from Clooney. Subtle inmany ways, but a pleasure to watch.

Assisted SuicidesDavidBurrowes

appy New Year! 2011 showed howdifficult it is to predict what will be

national issues in the coming months but ifthis monthʼs media is anything to go by,assisted suicide will be one this year.

Should we free relatives from the burden ofprosecution and allow terminally ill patientsthe choice of assisted death? Should we beconcerned at the example overseas wherelegalising assisted suicide has lead to a hugeincrease in such deaths? Can adequatesafeguards be written in to new laws toprotect the vulnerable? Is legalising assistedsuicide a step on the slippery slope tolegalising euthanasia?

It is an issue which cuts across party andethical lines. I recognise that caring for theterminally ill is a desperately difficult, complexand personal situation and any debate needscare and sensitivity and I would welcomehearing from those with direct experience. Myview is that there is not a need to change thelaw on assisted suicide.

The prosecution guidelines published lastFebruary has given a compassionate view tojudgments upon agonising decisions taken byrelatives of terminally ill patients. 60 casesreferred to the Director of Public Prosecutions

have not led toprosecution. But it isright that the law makesclear that society respects life, with all its difficulties, and suicide is not to beencouraged or assisted. I believe we need towork harder at supporting end of life carethrough funding excellent palliative carewhich is evident in our borough throughMacmillan nurses, The Nightingale CancerSupport Centre and North London Hospice.

The words of the French biologist JeanRostand sum it up for me: “For my part Ibelieve that there is no life so degraded, debased, deteriorated, or impoverished that itdoes not deserve respect and is not worthdefending with zeal and conviction".
