THE LEIGHTON OPEN GARDENS TRAIL
The Open Gardens Trail held on Saturday 6th June to raise funds for the running of Holy Trinity Church was a great success despite the strong winds and the catering tent trying to emulate a kite.
Thanks go particularly to all those brave folk who kindly opened their glorious gardens for critical inspection! The event also could not have taken place had it not been for Elisabeth’s wonderful organisation and our thanks go to her, her family and her hardy band of helpers, the Landgrebe family for the loan of the tables and chairs and the efficient tent erectors.
Thanks for all the wonderful cakes that were provided and served in the tea tent for all the plants and super plant stall, and to everyone who attended and supported the event. It was a very special afternoon and the sun shone on us all.

All Change at The
Leighton News
This edition of The Leighton News, the last before our
Summer break, will also be the last one prepared by the
editorial partnership of Jenny Sanders and Allan Smith.
Following our appeal in last month’s edition,
we have been very lucky to secure the services of a new
editor, who will produce his first issue in September.
David Holloway, who lives with his wife Pat at
Welsh Harp on the Long Mountain road, comes from a
background in education and business, and is keen to carry
The Leighton News into a new period. We are sure he will
develop the same close relationship with our readers,
sponsors, advertisers and donors that we have been
fortunate to enjoy. David will also take responsibility for
coordinating the distribution of the Leighton News through the well established network set up
by Gordon and Sylvia Helliwell over the past fifteen years.
Copy for the September edition and for all subsequent issues should be sent to David,
who can be contacted on:
01938 570675
e-mail: [email protected]
The outgoing team of Jenny, Allan, Sylvia and Gordon would like to thank everyone in
Leighton for their co-operation and support, and wish David well in his new venture.
Your donations are also important to the future of The Leighton
News.
This month we are very grateful to Doreen Oliver,
Bernard Oliver and John Roberts for their kind donations
to our funds.
Thank you!

Open Your Garden The National Gardens Scheme is now looking for gardens of interest, quality and character to raise money for
charity next year.
Nearly 4000 gardens open every year in England and Wales to raise money for charities including Marie Curie
Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. NGS welcomes new gardens to broaden our appeal, especially
gardens with a good level of plant interest.
The size of your garden is not the priority; many NGS gardens are normal back gardens.
If you think you could open your garden and raise funds, why not give me a ring and discuss the possibility of
opening next year. I look forward to hearing from you.

VILLAGE GOSSIP
Congratulations on the birth of their son Oliver go to Gemma and Dan Bow-
en, making Janet and Mike Williams grandparents once again. We are also
celebrating the safe arrival of Sebastian, first child of Jenny and Chris at
Church Lodge. Welcome to both babies.
Another cause of celebration in the Oliver family is the christening in Leighton Church of little Rosie, baby
daughter of Rachel and Will Jones and youngest granddaughter of Marilyn and Johnnie Oliver. Also well
done to Rosie's 6yr old sister Chloe who recently won Silver in a Gymnastics competition, following in the
forever supple footsteps of her Grandmother Mal whose international gymnastic achievements are many
and whose coaching will no doubt ensure future medals of many colours!
Thank you to Martin Dyson for restoring the Church noticeboard and also the WI seat.

Elystan Class Leighton C.P School
This term in Elystan class the children have been studying the Romans and the Celts. They have, in particular, been researching the different foods they ate, and traced where they were grown/imported from. The children wrote menus using their research and are now planning a Celt/Roman festival, where they are writing invites, choosing a venue, making a guest list and planning transport - Roman style!. They are using books and the internet to help with their research, and have
already 'tried and tested' making honey cakes for homework (which were delicious!).
We now have a wonderful
display on our walls of our
home made shields,
menus, and photographs
of us dressed as Roman
soldiers (see above). We
are now looking forward
to our visit to
Groundworks in Wrexham
to see how the Celts lived!

LEIGHTON
VILLAGE HALL
AGM
The recent AGM was well attended with 14
people present. Wine and good humour
flowed (there may have been a connection
between those two) and a wide range of plans and improvements were discussed. The Chairman,
David Williams, thanked everyone for another successful year and reminded us of all of the projects
completed over the last 12 months, some funded by the Entrust grant
financed by Potters Recycling whose continued support was
acknowledged. David also thanked the Officers, Caretaker and
Committee for each playing a part in this success.
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE elected:- CHAIR: David Williams, VICE
CHAIR: John Markwick, SECRETARY: Jane Walton. TREASURER: Tony
Garrett stated that he wished not to stand for re-election as he and
Sarah are planning to move away, but offered to continue until a new
Treasurer could be found. Tony was thanked for the great amount of
work he has done for LVH over his term of office. Therefore a new
TREASURER is needed and anyone interested in joining this committed
and enterprising group of 16 members, to ensure the smooth running of this vital part of village and
school life, then please either contact LVH (see below) or speak to David
Williams.
Thanks were also expressed to Sylvia Helliwell who has retired after many years of dedicated support, to Ruth Bridge for auditing the accounts, and to Ann Markwick for her expertise. Tony and Sarah Garrett were also thanked for all the work they are doing for the 30th Anniversary celebrations.
FUTURE PLANS....... Plans are being drawn up to upgrade the toilets to
the highest standard LVH can afford and also to repair the main floor this summer. Outstanding
maintenance including decorating the exterior of the hall is to be done and it was also agreed to
purchase more outside furniture and new entrance signs continue to be researched along with road
signs.
30th ANNIVERSAY...... Exciting announcements in detail will be in the September Newsletter.
NEXT MEETING: Wednesday 15th July 2015 at 8pm LVH.

SIT UP AT THE BACK THERE! HAVE YOU BEEN PAYING ATTENTION?
LEIGHTON NEWS END OF TERM EXAM As two ex-Headteachers bow out of producing the Leighton News, we thought we would revert to type and see
how much of what the newsletter has contained over the past year has lodged in the brains of our readers (it’s
hard to break the habits of a lifetime). A scholarship prize of a £10 book token will be awarded to the person with
the highest score. In the event of a tie, the winner will be drawn from a mortarboard. Detentions and chores may
be imposed on those with exceptionally low scores, and the naughty chair is ready. Handwriting, spelling and
good manners will be taken into account. The judges’ decision is final, and cheeky comments will be severely
punished. Now, are your pencils sharpened? Stop picking your nose, that boy in the third row!

And finally……..it’s goodbye from me, goodbye from him and
goodbye from them!
After a number of years working on “The Leighton News” Allan, Sylvia, Gordon and I are
passing on the baton, which in our case comprises of computers, templates, lists of
distributors (and the numbers of households they distribute to) and the inevitable green
plastic bags!
We have enjoyed our time working for the village in this way and so we will
part with some sorrow but also with some pleasure! New blood brings new
ideas and new ways of working.
As well as connecting villagers by reporting those special moments -such as
births, marriages, notable birthdays and the inevitable deaths - it is the
vehicle through which events such as Coffee Mornings, Shows,
Pantomimes and, more recently, the Pop-up Pubs are advertised. It provides
a schedule of Church Services and rotas and news of events in neighbouring villages. None
of this would be possible without those of you who forward information to us. For this
support we have been extremely grateful and wish to make our gratitude public! Please
carry on the good work you do for us all in Leighton!
To those who are carrying on their roles, Tanya Allison, our very capable treasurer, Dave
McCourt, who archives all our editions of the newsletter on the village website, the school,
which arranges for copies to be available to interested parents, and to the loyal distributors,
who ensure that your copy arrives through your letterbox, we give you our thanks and wish
you every success in the future.
And now it’s over to David Holloway. Good Luck to you all!
