The Facts

• 6.1.09 2pm: Mr Harwood reports that food poisoning (leading to sickness and diarrhoea) can be caused by eating a dodgy kebab.

Quick Starter.....Can you remember the 3 types of Microorganism?

- Virus- Bacteria- Fungi

Which type of microorganism can cause food poisoning?

- Bacteria

Page 5: The Mysterious Case of Jordan Harwood and the Dodgy Kebab! = + Jordan dodgy kebab Uh-oh!

So, what was it about this kebab which made it so 'dodgy'? (Or in other words, why did it contain enough harmful bacteria to give Jordan food poisoning?)

Your task is to visit the kebab shop from which Jordan purchased the kebab, and look for clues...

Clue 1:

The timer on the oven is broken and goes off 2 minutes early. Is this a problem? Why?

Uncooked meat is covered in harmful bacteria. Cooking food (making it hot) kills the bacteria.

Clue 2:

The fridge isn't working properly. What does this mean?

Making bacteria cold stops them from reproducing and multiplying.

Clue 3:

There is no sink in the cooking area. What does this mean?

If someone touches uncooked meat which is covered in harmful bacteria, and then other food, the harmful bacteria is transferred onto the other food.

Clue 4:

The Bottle of Mr Muscle is empty. So?

If work surfaces aren't cleaned harmful bacteria are given the chance to multiply.

Clue 5:

The uncooked Kebab meat is kept at the top of the fridge, and the lettuce used in the kebabs is on the bottom shelf. Why might this be a problem?

If uncooked meat is kept above other food in the fridge, the harmful bacteria can fall onto the food below .

Final Task:

Having visited the Kebab Shop, your final job is to write a report to the owner, advising him how he can make his kitchen more hygienic.

To really convince him, you could explain why each prevention measure will help to prevent his customers from getting food poisoning by talking about the microorganisms.

You may include a poster that he can display in his kitchen to remind his staff of what they need to do to make sure their food is safe for customers to eat.
