November 2015 As most of you are aware there was a scheduling snafu at our meeting place on October 7th. Somehow the Legion booked FDL Baseball into our normal time. About 25 of us showed up so we had a cocktail and a brief meeting in the lobby where we tried to sort out the problem. The Legion also booked up our Nov. 4th date so we decided in the lobby that the next meeting will be November 11th. Because of the disappointment of not having the bait building night, Scott unselfishly agreed to come back the next Wednesday evening (Oct 14) to direct the bait building project. About 15 showed up. We will be doing this again soon and also include a leader building seminar.

November 11 Meeting

Yes, November 11 is correct. This is the date we established with the Legion till we get back on their calendar correctly in December for a 12/2, meeting. Our guest speaker for November 11 is Todd Forcier from Todd Forcier’s Guide Service. Todd specializes in guiding on the Petenwell Flowage and fishing in the counties of Adams, Juneau, Marathon, Oneida, Portage, Vilas, and Wood. Further information about Todd and his guide service can be found on his website http://www.forciersguideservice.com . The meeting will begin at 7:00 pm at the American Legion Clubhouse on Fond du Lac Avenue. Todd is a supporter of our Club in the past and we look forward to his seminar.

Newsworthy:

Bob Haase had his last radio broadcast of “Outdoors Thursday” on KFIZ 1450 on Thursday October 29th at 9 in the morning. Bob had this regular show for 11 years sponsored by Dutch’s Trading Post and KFIZ. Bob’s theme of his last show was to make sure that everyone enjoys the outdoors that we are blessed with in our State. Bob is a charter member of this club and serves as a director of our Musky Alliance. He is very active with us and several other outdoor organizations like Trout Unlimited, Walleyes for Tomorrow and the WI Conservation Congress and Winnebago Streamers. This is just a short list of the outdoor service organizations in which he is a member. We value greatly Bob’s membership in our Club. Congratulations, Bob for your successful radio program. On his farewell show Bob stated that he is simply going to practice what he preaches, and “get outdoors and enjoy it”.

Our last meeting was August 5th. This meeting was presided over by past President , Jerry LaPine. Our next meeting is Wednesday October 7 @ 7:00pm. Scott Klapperich will be leading us in the building of bucktails. This program is back by popular demand. If you missed this program a year ago, you will have another chance to learn and enjoy this fun and practical activity. The cost of this will be $10 per dbl bladed bucktail. There have been several excellent events this summer that you all should know that involved members of our club and support from our club. OPERATION MUSKY: The first event to be mentioned is OPERATION MUSKY. This has been an annual event for the last eight years organized by our guide member Paul Klein and 3 other Wisconsin guides. Over the last eight 8 years, 160 recent veterans have been able to participate in a “welcome home/thank you” fishing expedition to BayStore Camp on Lake of the Woods. This year 20 vets were guests at LOTW and were accompanied by 10 professional guides. Paul stated that it is so rewarding to see the joy these guys expressed in their four-day outing. Paul said that many of the veterans experienced some tough duty and this time was very healing and therapeutic for them. An event like this carries a high price tag in the area of $35-$40,000/year. Our club was called upon to help support this event and we were happy to offer monetary help. There were a couple of large corporate sponsors such as Fleet Farm and Amzoil. Special thanks to Paul for donating his boat and services and obtaining our support to this worthwhile project! Sadly, this was the last year for this event that will be remembered fondly by 160 veterans. Veteran Musky Fishing Trip: Another meaningful event that our club and individual members just completed was the “Salute the Troops” outing just held earlier in September on the Three Lakes Chain. At this project, which was initially conceived by Tracy Quallman of Marian University and Dave and Mary LaPine, we hosted twelve veterans for a weekend of musky fishing, meals, lodging, and comradery. The head chefs for this weekend were Mary LaPine, Tuesday Klapperich, Chris Stubbe, and Judy Hopp. Boats and “guiding” was provided by Scott Klapperich, Paul Klein , Dave LaPine, Dik Suzek, Greg Stubbe and Harlan Hopp. Generous monetary support to this outing was provided by Greg Stubbe’s employer, NATURAL STONE VENEERS of Fond du Lac and the NAVY CLUB SHIP 75 service club of Fond du Lac. Thank you very much for your support! The fish did not cooperate completely but the experience was extremely rewarding for our Club members and the participating vets. Thank you to all who donated time and effort to this project and to the club for voting to support the event. Hopefully we can do more of this type of thing in the future. On a last note about the Salute the Troops outing; Dave LaPine said that as he was packing up to leave, a car full of the vets pulled up next to him and gave formal military salute as a gesture of gratitude. Dave felt very moved and happy beyond description.

At the last meeting we received a report on the Wild Rose Hatchery project that we helped sponsor. 12”-14” baby muskies were harvested from the hatchery ponds and planted in various brood stock lakes, the Bay of Green Bay, and the Winnebago System. Importantly we note that our fundraising efforts with the raffle boat was better this year by about $1000. We sold about $4130 in tickets. If we can continue this trend, we are on our way to do more meaningful things for the resource and the community in the future. Congratulations and thank you to all of our ticket sellers! We do many things for the resource and the community. When you are trying to explain to potential raffle ticket donors what we do with our money, remember these 3 projects mentioned above. We also have our resume available to list what we have done in the past. Bob Haase and Richard Feustel have reported that our web site is closer to the finish line. Veteran Fishing Outing

September 11 – 13 will be the Club outing at Three Lakes. This Important Club outing will be coupled

with a musky fishing trip to thank our military veterans. The veteran outing is sponsored by Salute the

Troops, the Navy Club - Ship 75, Marian University, and the Fond du Lac Musky Club. So far, six Club

members have volunteered their time and boats to be guides for 12 veterans. All Club members are

invited to join in the outing with lunch on Saturday and an outdoor fish dinner and campfire Saturday

night with the veterans. The fish are being provided by Dave and Mary LaPine with a little help from

Richard. Contact Scott Klapperich (922-948-2283) or Richard Feustel (414-803-6443) for more details.

Please register with one of us on or before Sept. 9. We are in need of one more members and their boat

to take a veteran on the water. If you would like to join this outing and add a veteran fisherman to your

boat, please contact Scott or Richard ASAP. Another Vet would like to go and the additional boat and

club member would be helpful.

THE PRIMSPIN INVITATIONAL

Pat Primising has asked us to put out an invite to participate in a fishing expedition named after his

father’s spinning lures starting at 6:30 am Monday September 7 on Winneconne. Lunch will be at the Fin

n Feather at 11:30 with a Debriefing at 4:30. Each participant will give $10 to the angler catching the

longest musky. If no muskies are caught each participant will give $5.00 to the angler with the longest

northern pike. Ladies and Gentlemen interested in joining this expedition, please contact Pat Primising

At the June 3rd meeting we had a detailed briefing for the June 21st outing with maps and commentary

from anglers that have fished Lac Vieux Desert.

The next meeting is Wednesday August 5th @ 7:00 pm at the American Legion Post. Jerry LaPine will

preside at the meeting to fill in for Scott Klapperich and Dave Mace who will both be in Canada on a

Musky Retreat. Ron Lange and Charlie LaPine should both be present at the meeting. Please bring in

your Boat Raffle money and unused tickets at this time. Now is the time for us to press hard to try and

do some fund raising. We will have the boat in our possession again on 7/23-8/4. Let’s take advantage

of this time wisely and SELL SOME TICKETS! The Fox Lake Car Show on Saturday July 25th will be a day we

can have the boat in front of a lot of people. If you can help on that day call Dave Mace 920-960-4179.

Any other bright ideas for promoting the boat tickets call Dave or Scott 960-4179 or 948-2283.

As you will recall, we have been working with the Wild Rose Hatchery with their musky rearing ponds’

habitat. We have been informed that they will be harvesting the musky stock on July 28th and 29th for

introduction into lakes. The supervisor welcomes and invites us to assist on those days with the pit-

tagging and distribution into designated brood stock lakes. Leftover fish from the brood stock quotas

will be going in to the Winnebago System. Jerry says that the fish are about 12 inches long and

extremely hungry. They have been honing their ambush skills with the help of our artificial structures in

their brood ponds. Please call Jerry Loop (920-948-4240) by July 24th to let him know if you can be there

and for further details about the project. This should be an interesting time and provide an opportunity

to see first hand what our club does for the resource.

June Outing – Lac Vieux Desert

It was another tough outing for the Club in June. Except for a late morning, early afternoon rain shower

Saturday, the weather was beautiful. There were 12 people associated with the Musky Club on Lac Vieux

Desert, not too bad for our first “upnorth” outing in a while. Club members had follows but no musky.

A half dozen northern pike, a few good size walleye and bass but no members landed any musky. Two

non-members caught muskies, 39” and another... The second musky was caught by Dann Denslow’s

friend, Lynn, in Slaughter Bay on Lac Vieux Desert. Interesting story on this catch: Lynn was fishing with

his son’s rod this Father’s Day weekend. Lynn’s son had passed away about 7 years ago. Dann and Lynn

had not caught any musky all weekend. It was Father’s Day so Dann encouraged Lynn to use the lure his

son had made for him many years ago. It was Father’s Day after all and nothing seemed to be working

anyway. It was a “rugged’ lure, a plug with a couple of hooks. On Lynn’s second cast, while bringing the

lure out of the water, a musky took it and ran. We are told it was quite a fight but in the end, Lynn

landed a 48” tiger musky on his son’s pole using his son’s homemade lure. Lynn may not have won the

“Cup’ but WOW, that is a fishing memory!

The coveted First Musky of the Outing Cup remains unclaimed.

July Outing – Lake Winneconne and Poygan

Plan on getting out locally in July. We have proven that traveling hours to fish the trophy lakes is no

guarantee of fish. In July, the Musky Club will have an outing on Lake Winneconne. We will rendezvous

Saturday, July 18th for 11:30 lunch at Fin ‘n Feather. You can put your boat in at Fin ‘n Feather as well.

The outing will officially run July 17-19th for the elusive First Musky of the Outing Cup. There is no need

to register in advance. If you catch a legal musky in this July 17-19 window on Lake Winneconne or

Poygan, please call or text Richard Feustel at 414-803-6443 with the details of your catch. If possible,

send a picture to Richard and don’t forget to register with Harlan too.

Remember to notify Harlan Hopp at Rt 1 144 W Church St Oakfield, WI 53065 when you catch and

release a musky. We have preprinted postcards for your use and these notifications are used in

determining our award winners at our annual banquet in March.

A get well wish goes out to Steve Herzberg, a member and co-owner of Mr. Marine with his wife

Connie, who broke his leg badly during the Walleye Weekend Tourney. He is underwent surgery On July

1 for his injuries and we wish him a speedy and complete recovery.

Eric Larsen informed us about his 11 yr old niece Emily Koehler who is fighting stage 4 thyroid cancer.

There is a benefit “Give A Hoot for Emily Koehler” on August 15 at J J Maloney’s Bar in Kaukauna (N1994

Maloney Rd Kaukauna 54130). There will be a Silent Auction with items such as guided walleye and

musky trips, including a trip on CAVE RUN by Tony Grant, rods, tackle, prints, and casino packages.

There will be raffles, prizes, games and Live music by the Appleton School of Rock. This sound like a fun

time and an opportunity at the same time to help a little girl and her family. Eric won and then donated

a $1000 for Emily at a Gamblers Hockey game by shooting a hockey puck for goal at half time! Eric also

states that the Musky action is heating up with the weather on the Winnebago System. He’s

recommending perch patterns. He just had a client boat a 49 ½”er on Butte des Mortes. Call Eric and

book a trip. He still has some openings 920-858-1659.

RD MEETING

There will be a regular meeting of the Winnebagoland Musky Club on Wednesday June 3rd at 7:00 pm at the American Legion Clubhouse in Fond du Lac. We have changed the meeting schedules earlier this year to meet every other month. Brian Blettner will be our guest speaker this month. He is an outdoor hunting and fishing guide from Conover, WI. Brian is a 39 year native to the area and has a Wisconsin / Upper Michigan guide service including all freshwater species plus hunting whitetails, bear, grouse, turkeys, waterfowl and coyotes. He also works at Northern Waters Angling and Archery in Conover. Brian speaking to us is very timely, in that our next outing is at his back door. This should be a good briefing. He is also familiar with the 3-Lakes chain which is where our September outing is being held. We will also be discussing the current University of WI Stevens Point/Musky Alliance musky research project. JUNE 19, 20, & 21 OUTING @ LAC VIEUX DESERT We will open our second 2015 outing at Lac Vieux Desert on Friday June 19 thru Sunday June 21. We have lodging reserved (5 rooms together) at the Hiawatha Motel in Eagle River for our group. $88/night (2+/rm). We can get more rooms. We must RSVP by June 1 to hold the reservation. We will provide a briefing at the June 3rd meeting. Call or text Richard Feustel (414-803-6443) for details, also, his e-mail address is [email protected]. The club outing lunch get-together will begin at 11:30 am on Saturday at the Sunset Resort right on the most Western shore of Lac Vieux Desert. 5894 West Shore Rd., Land O’ Lakes, WI 54540 (800-221-9689 or 715-547-3684). Sunrise web site is www.sunriselodge.com. Launching your boat is best done on the public launches instead of Sunset Lodge. They are planning a soup/sandwich/salad bar/desert/beverage special for us. Your cost will be $5.00. They do not serve alcohol. We had our get-together here 10 or twelve years ago. It was very nice! There is docking available for us to boat right up to them. Please sign up at the June 3rd meeting or contact Richard Feustel at his contact info listed above as soon as possible.

Remember our new contest called “First Musky of the Outing” is alive and well. We have not had our first winner yet so you could be the first. You must record and report the time and size of your fish to be eligible for The “First Musky of the Outing Silver Cup Traveling Trophy”. The fish must be 34” to count. Please call or text Richard Feustel (414-803-6443) ASAP (preferably immediately) to register your catch with the time you caught and released your musky. This trophy will travel and be awarded at the next outing.

MAY OUTING AT FOX AND LITTLE GREEN LAKE The last outing on May 9th and 10th at Fox Lake and Little Green Lake was well attended by our club and not so well attended by the fish. A cold front seemed to shut down the musky bite and no muskies were registered for the outing. For a our first musky club outing, this could be considered a rousing success based on attendance, not by muskies caught though. We had 30 people at the luncheon and about that many fishing. You would have thought with that many people we should have landed a musky …not this time. There were stories of many follows and ones that got away but no muskies to claim the coveted

“First Musky of the Outing” trophy. A number of people landed nice northern pike, walleyes, and bass so fish were caught. A 38” pike and a 26” walleye were the biggest and both caught on Fox Lake. Both lakes reported catching fish and seeing musky.

There is a feature article in the newest Musky Hunter Magazine on fishing the Bay of Green Bay authored by our club member and guide Eric Larsen. Check it out.

Harlan Hopp has only one fish to report this month; his own a 38” Musky caught on Fox Lake, May 4th on a #3 Vibrax spinner. Remember to register your muskies with Harlan with our preprinted postcards. This registration of fish is the basis for the awards we present at our annual banquet every March. If you don’t have a card, send your own letter to Harlan Hopp 144 West Church St. , Oakfield, WI 53065. The minimum information needed is: Your name, the date of catch, length of fish, lure or bait used, and the body of water. You may register fish as short as 34” per our rules (THIS IS NOT THE STATE LEGAL SIZE) . DON’T KEEP IT!!! Of course, every musky you catch should be “CATCH/PHOTO/RELEASE”.

Remember to help sell Raffle Boat Tickets. We need full club participation with this project.

Boat Raffle Fund Raiser

Many of you have picked up tickets to sell individually. Good luck in selling as many as you can. We can get you more. This is so important to the survival of the Club and giving us funds to provide help in our projects. We have done so many great things for the community and the resource in the past and it would be nice for us to continue. We had success taking the Boat to the Green Lake Sportsman’s Rummage Sale. Special thanks to Steve Critchley, Scott Klapperich, Richard Feustal, Dann Denslow, Tom LaPine, Jerry LaPine, and Dick Denslow the volunteers who helped sell tickets. We have also had help already this year from Dutch’s, Tuffy’s, and Fish Tails Bait Shop in Fox Lake, displaying the boat for us. Here is the schedule for when we have the boat again; May 22-June 9; July 23 to August 4. We Plan on being at the Fox Lake Car Show on July 25th with the boat. Think about volunteering for this event. It’s fun being at these car shows.

The project will then be able to study what happens to these fish as

they grow older. The Clayton Becker Foundation has pledged $5000 towards the project, The University has pledged $5000, and the Alliance has pledged $3000. That’s where we come in, pledging $300 as an individual club to pick up the shortfall. This sounds like a good opportunity for us to participate in a worthwhile project.
