Dear Museum of Flight friends,

Spring has arrived at The Museum of Flight, and with it comes growth in every facet of our campaign, Inspiration Begins Here! We are proud to unveil the newly renovated Alaska Airlines Aerospace Education Center, which allows students and parents to research and ask questions about aerospace-related education programs – whether they’re interested in attending Aerospace Camp Experience at the Museum, or investigating which colleges have the best aviation programs in the country. Also, our Airpark has a new location adjacent to the Museum’s entrance, in anticipation of breaking ground for the new Aviation Pavilion.

The campaign’s leadership volunteers (including committee members from five active affinity groups) are enthusiastically dedicated to sharing our mutual mission with their peers. Our Steering Committee has established ambitious objectives, and together, we have reached more than 75% of our $77 million campaign goal. We’re continually building energy around the campaign and moving forward with spring projects, but we still have a ways to go.

I am continually awed by our committee members’ passion as they invite their allies to join us in an effort to preserve our history, inspire our children, and ensure a bright future for the community we serve. This is a banner year at the Museum, as 2015 marks our 50th anniversary. With this milestone comes plenty of exciting ways to stay connected. I invite you to experience the newly completed

Michael & Mary Kay Hallman Spaceflight Academy, explore our new 787, or reflect on the history of our Museum beautifully depicted on the 50th Anniversary exhibition panels. We dedicate the Museum’s year-long 50th anniversary celebrations to the memory of our dear friend, Bill Boeing, Jr. who passed away in January. Driven by an unparalleled commitment to preserving aerospace history and advocating for education, Bill tirelessly championed the mission of the Museum. He touched our lives with stories of growing up alongside history in the Boeing community, and the Museum events he attended with his wife June were made all the more special with his presence. A remarkable man of talent, compassion and insight, it is impossible to overstate Bill’s impact on The Museum of Flight, its board of trustees and staff. As we recall our first five decades, we remember that Bill was there with us every step of the way.

I truly thank you for your dedication and passion to your Museum of Flight. Together, and in the spirit of our friend Bill Boeing, we will ensure that Inspiration Begins Here!

INSPIRED PROJEC TS

On Saturday, Jan. 31 Museum staff and visitors braved the cold and fog to watch our beloved birds venture east. Starting at 7:30 a.m., the Concorde, Air Force One, and Lockheed Constellation were carefully towed by skilled engineers and facilities staff across the street to their temporary nest. A formation with the Concorde, Air Force One, and Boeing 787 Dreamliner marks the interim Airpark, while the Constellation is stationed directly in front of the Museum’s door. The 747 RA001 will rest behind Raisbeck Aviation High School until the new pavilion is finished. Our former Airpark aircraft and many of our other planes in the collection will eventually be relocated to the Aviation Pavilion.

Caution: Planes X-ing

We’re All Pulling Together: Alaska Airlines Aerospace Education Center OpensAlaska Airlines has partnered with The Museum of Flight to open the new Alaska Airlines Aerospace Education Center. Located in the Museum’s iconic Great Gallery, the Center is surrounded by artifacts telling history of aviation, as well as the educational facilities that inspire youth to become part of the future of aerospace. The Center is the nexus for all education-related activities at the Museum, where students can access college and career data, scholarship information, and meet with leaders from the aerospace community. The opening of the AAAEC includes a number of structural site enhancements and renovations. Previously hidden behind walls, the Aviation Learning Center was redesigned and reconfigured to better utilize the amazing program resources. Beyond these improvements, the Museum’s commitment to access and diversity is addressed by increasing community outreach (particularly to underrepresented populations) and additional financial assistance opportunities.

A Spark of an Idea

I grew up near Boise High School and intended to go into the family sporting goods business after graduation. My father had other ideas. He insisted that I needed a college education. Dad was right.

Education is the key. Children are the foundation of the future and if we don’t pay attention to them, we’re going to pay a heck of a price. As will they. The Museum of Flight is an institution that encourages young people to succeed and pursue their dreams.

When I was at Boeing, we took the long view. An airplane program could be five years in the making and it could be twenty years in trying to

determine the result. The 737 program was almost cancelled when I was a junior manager, yet we stuck to it and it turned out to be our most successful product ever.

The Museum of Flight knows to take the long view when it comes to education. It begins with kindergarteners when they first discover the universe in the portable planetarium. It continues throughout elementary school as they build simple robots and learn about the basics of flight. Through junior high, they delve into advanced aerodynamics and nanotechnology. And by the time they reach high school,

they’re planning simulated missions to Mars. The result of that long view?

Once, when someone asked me what it takes to get ahead, I answered “try to be in the right place at the right time.” The

Museum of Flight is the right place at the right time to help our children get ahead. That’s why I’m throwing my support behind

the Inspiration Begins Here! campaign.

Students who grew up in the Museum are now working in the aerospace sector as engineers, pilots, and scientists.
