Chicago is a musical adaptation a 1926 play of the same name written by Maurine Dallas Watkins, a Chicago journalist turned playwright . Watkins based her sensational drama on the real life stories of Chicago celebrity killers, Beulah May Annan and Belva Gaertner . The play, a suc-

cess in its original production, running for 172 performances, was made into a silent film by Cecil B . DeMille in 1927 . The material was again filmed in 1942 as a star vehicle for Ginger Rogers under the title Roxie Hart . The ’42 film, with a screenplay by Nunnally Johnson, made it very clear that Roxie was innocent of the killing of Fred Casely — a revision to the story that allowed it to adhere to the strict Hollywood production code of the era that would not have toler-ated a heroine getting away with murder .

In 1975 the stage musical version of Chicago opened in New York with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Ebb and director/choreographer Bob Fosse . It starred Broadway legends Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera as Roxie and Velma, with Jerry Orbach playing Billy Flynn . The produc-tion, considered very innovative and dark at the time, was nominated for 11 Tony Awards but won none, losing every award to A Chorus Line, which also opened that season . The show ran for 936 performances in its initial run . In May of 1996, the City Center Encore’s series presented Chicago in a stripped-down version that later transferred to Broadway, winning six Tony Awards in 1996 including best revival of a musical . That production is still running and holds records as the longest-running revival, the longest-running American show, and the second-longest-running show in the history of the Broadway stage .

Composer John Kander teamed with lyricist Fred Ebb to forge one of the longest-running and most successful creative partner-ships in Broadway

history, their bold, brassy style giving rise a series of enormously popular and provocative musicals . When the two met in 1964, their styles and personali-ties meshed, and they soon began writ-ing songs together . Two of their earliest tunes were “My Coloring Book” and “I Don’t Care Much,” both of which were recorded by Barbra Streisand . Flora, the Red Menace (1965) marked the Broadway debut of Kander and Ebb, as well as of Liza Minnelli, who was cast in the lead through the songwrit-ers’ persistent lobbying of the director . Minnelli later appeared in the Kander and Ebb stage musicals The Act (1977) and The Rink (1984) and in the film version of their Cabaret (1972) .

The duo won their first Tony Award for the score of Cabaret (1966), which also was named best musical of the season . The film version, which contained some new Kander and Ebb tunes, received multiple Academy Awards . The show was revived onstage in 1987 . Kander and Ebb received Tony Awards for their scores of Woman of the Year (1981) and Kiss of the Spider Woman (1993), which also was hon-ored as best musical .

Other Kander and Ebb stage works include The Happy Time (1968), Zorba

(1968, revival 1981), 70, Girls, Seventy (1971), and Steel Pier (1997) . Chicago had a significant run when it opened in 1975, and a new production earned the 1997 Tony Award for best revival of a musical .

The duo earned an Oscar nomina-tion for the song “How Lucky Can You Get” from the film Funny Lady (1975) . Another of their memorable screen tunes was the title song from the film New York, New York (1977), which became a standard for Frank Sinatra . They also wrote material for the Emmy Award-winning Liza with a Z: A Concert for Television (1972) and other television specials . In 1991 Kander and Ebb were inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame in New York City . That same year a compilation show of Kander and Ebb songs titled And the World Goes ’Round opened Off-Broadway . The two songwriters received yet another Academy Award nomination in 2003 for “I Move On,” from the film version of Chicago (2002), which won six Oscars, includ-ing Best Picture .

Bob Fosse was born in Chicago on June 23, 1927 . Fosse took an early interest in dance, displaying unusual skill . His parents supported

his interest, enrolling him in formal dance training . By his early teens, Fosse was dancing professionally in local

nightclubs . It was here that he was first exposed to the themes of vaudeville and burlesque performance . Fosse enlisted in the Navy after graduating from high school in 1945 . He was still in boot camp when the war came to an end . After fulfilling his military require-ment, Fosse settled in New York City and continued to pursue dance .

The first few parts that Fosse landed were as part of a Broadway chorus . In 1953 he appeared briefly in the MGM movie musical Kiss Me Kate (1953) . His work attracted the attention of Broadway director George Abbott and choreog-rapher Jerome Robbins . Fosse choreo-graphed the 1954 show Pajama Game, which was directed by George Abbott .

Fosse’s signature style, which incorporated complex moves and imagery drawn from vaudeville, was instantly popular . Pajama Game earned him his first Tony Award for Best Choreography . His next musical, Damn Yankees, was another smash . Fosse forged a working relationship with leading dancer Gwen Verdon that would span his career . The two married in 1960 and had a daughter, Nicole .

Hugely successful by 1960, Fosse still faced opposition from director and pro-ducers who considered his material to be too suggestive . He decided to take on the role of director as well as choreogra-pher in order to maintain the integrity of his artistic vision in Hollywood as well as on Broadway . His subsequent musicals included Sweet Charity, Cabaret, and Pippin . The 1972 film version of Cabaret won eight Academy Awards . Fosse won Tony Awards for direction and choreography for his work on Pippin (1981) . He also won an Emmy for his staging of the television variety show Liza with a Z (1972) .

Fosse wrote three additional stage musicals before his death . He sur-vived a heart attack, suffered during rehearsals for Chicago, to write and choreograph the autobiographical film All That Jazz . Fosse suffered another heart attack in Washington, D .C ., on September 23, 1987, and died before reaching the hospital . He remains one of the most distinctive and influential choreographers in history, remembered through Broadway revivals and screen-ings of his work .

The Muhlenberg College experience offers a direct learning partnership among faculty and students in the classroom, laboratory, and performance studio . Muhlenberg offers students opportunities to foster the most important goal of the liberal arts education—education of the whole person .

In Theatre and Dance, faculty and staff have developed a multi-faceted approach to education that combines exciting creative experience with rigorous professional standards . The production program reinforces the belief that as academic disciplines, theatre and dance must be intellectual and practical . Serious training and intense interaction between faculty and students provide a collaborative rather than competitive atmosphere in the department .

Students are challenged as artists in the studio and classroom, working closely with distinguished faculty and nationally recognized guest artists to achieve a conceptual understanding and a practical working knowledge of the arts and the profession . Stage experience is considered one of the most important elements in the training process for actors and dancers, directors and choreographers, production stage managers, designers and technicians . Students provide considerable talent and leadership in the staging of both main stage and studio projects .

Performing Arts graduates of Muhlenberg College are prepared for study at the graduate level, pursue lives as professional artists, and contribute creative leadership in many other careers . The blend of academic work in the liberal arts with a professional level of training in theatre and dance has prepared them to work as actors, directors, designers and stage managers, choreographers, dancers, and dance educators, and production assistants and arts administrators on Broadway, in film and television, and in major regional and educational theatres across the nation .

Muhlenberg’s production program has been ranked in the top ten in the country for eight years running, according to The Princeton Review, including a No . 1 ranking for 2012 . The Fiske Guide to Colleges ranks Muhlenberg among the top 20 small college programs in the nation in both theatre and dance—one of only eight schools in the country to appear on both lists .
