Shaving Cream

As you drive along Becker Road in Spafford, you'll seethem. A series of little red wooden signs with whitelettering on them that say:

Within this valeOf toil and sinYour head grows baldBut not your chinBurma-Shave

If you were born after 1955, you're probably too youngto remember either Burma-Shave or the signs thatdotted the American landscape for almost 40 years. Butfrom 1925 until 1963 this brand of shaving cream wasadvertised by using roadside signs like these:

The bearded ladyTried a jarNow she's a famousMovie starBurma-Shave

Each set of signs ended with the name of the sponsor,which of course was Burma-Shave. But by the mid 1940sthe signs were so well known that this set went up:

If you don't knowWhose signs these areYou can't have drivenVery far

Boy, was this ever true!

In the Beginning

The year was 1925 and the Odell family's Burma-Vitacompany had just come out with a new product; a pre-mixed, brushless shaving cream. This may not seem likesuch a big deal to those of you who are used to seeingshelves of products like Barbasol and Edge at PriceChopper, but back in 1925 this really was something.

Back then, when a guy shaved, he had to make his ownlather with a bar of soap, a shaving brush, and ashaving mug. As if that wasn't messy enough to beginwith, the brush often sat around damp in the bathroomand would begin to smell. A shaving cream that camealready mixed up in a jar, and that you could justspread on with your hands, was definitely a good idea.

The Odells had a great product, but sales were slowbecause no one knew their product even existed, andthe company was in danger of going under. Indesperation, Allan Odell put up a set of signs alongthe road to Albert Lea that said:

Shave the modern wayFine for the skinDruggists have itBurma-Shave

While this set of signs didn't exactly have therhyming pattern and snappy wit that the later oneswould, it did the job. People heard about the product,started buying it, and came back for more. At sixmillion jars a year, the Odells were on a roll.

Later on they'd put up this set of signs:

Everyone Loves Burma-Shave

Well if not the product itself, they definitely lovedthe signs. They had become a major part of Americanpopular culture.

Long before there were Volkswagen Beetles for kids toplay "Punchbug" with, families were scouting the roadsfor the next set of Burma-Shave signs. Sometimesthey'd even assign one kid the job of looking out therear window for signs meant for the other side of theroad. The result was often something like:

Burma ShaveGo HomeoIf You won't shaveTo RomeoSaid Juliet

As the Allies invaded Europe in World War II, Burma-Shave signs went with them. They were often plantedalong the way by the advance troops in order to cheerup those who came after, and to remind them of home.

One puzzled set of sailors on a Navy training shipsteaming through the Bering Sea found a set strungalong a large ice floe written in Russian. These werethe result of a practical joke by the helicopter crewthat had flown on ahead of them.

And people loved the Burma-Shave signs so much thatthey wanted to get in on the act by entering theyearly jingle contests. With a $100 prize if yourjingle was one of the 25 selected, thousands of peoplesent in entries.

One entry that was deemed to risque for signs was:

A Trip To Mars – Part 1

The Odells ran this set of signs making fun of thepopularity of coupon offers. The joke was on them,however, when the Burma-Vita office in Minneapolis wasburied in scrap metal from the fenders people had sentin. But they made good on their offer, and gave eachperson a free jar of Burma-Shave.

With the fender incident in mind, you'd think thatthey would've known better than to put up a set ofsigns that read:

Free, freeA trip to MarsFor 900Empty jars

When Arliss French, of Appleton, Wisconsin, wrote themasking where he should send the jars, the Odells wroteback: If a trip to Mars you'd earn, remember, friend,there's no return.

Undaunted, Mr. French sent the Odells back a letterthat said: Let's not quibble, let's not fret, gatheryour forces, I'm all set.

The Odells sent out one more response: Our rockets areready; we ain't splitting hairs; just send us the jars– and arrange your affairs.

They also sent someone out to Appleton. Something verystrange was going on in Wisconsin, and the Odellswanted to know just what it was.




A Trip to Mars – Part 2

After the Burma-Shave rep got to Appleton to checkthings out, he immediately called the home office withhis report. It seems that Mr. French was the managerof the local Red Owl, and was in a unique position tocollect 900 empty Burma-Shave jars.

Frenchy, as he was known, had set up an elaboratedisplay in his store with flying saucers, little greenmen, and a huge banner that said "Help Send Frenchy toMars" surrounding a huge stack of empty Burma-Shavejars. Whenever a customer bought a jar of Burma-Shave,the contents would be scooped out into an empty icecream carton to be taken home, and the remaining jarwould be added to the display.

This guy was serious, and something had to be done.Fortunately, everyone involved had a sense of humorabout things. It was also turning into a great publicrelations bonanza for both Burma-Shave and Red Owl, asnewspapers and magazines across the country picked upthe story.

At first the Odells thought of sending Frenchy toChicago, to visit the Mars Candy factory. But thensomeone from the Red Owl main office came up with abetter idea. Together they'd send Frenchy and his wifeto Mars, Germany.

An armored truck arrived in Minneapolis, carryingFrenchy's 900 empty jars. When Frenchy himselfarrived, wearing a space suit with a big red owl onthe front, the Odells gave him a few full jars to useduring his trip.

Not only was it a big deal when they flew out ofMinneapolis, but it was an even bigger deal when theyarrived in Germany. The town made a three-day festivalof the visit, and everyone had a wonderful time.

You can rest assured that the Odells never ran thatset of signs again.




The End of the Road

The Burma-Shave signs worked well back in the dayswhen a fast car was going maybe 45 mph. But timeschanged as roads got better and cars got faster. Thebeginning of the end came in the mid 1950s. That waswhen the Federal Highway Act was signed into law, andthe building of the Interstate Highway System began.

These new roads would take people off of the oldcounty, state, and US routes where the Burma-Shavesigns had flourished for years. And while these newroads made it possible for people to get from place toplace much faster, trying to place Burma-Shave signson these roads presented a special set of problems.

While increased driving speed presented its own set ofproblems, perhaps what really did in the Burma-Shavesigns was the nature of the Interstate Highwaysthemselves. No longer were these little roads thatpassed closely by many pieces of private property onwhich the Burma-Shave people could negotiate to placetheir signs. Not only did these new roads have bufferzones that could extend the equivalent of a city blockto the left and right, but the state highwaydepartments often prohibited advertising signs ontheir property.

Finally, in 1965, the Odells sold the company and thedecision was made to take down the signs that hadentertained American drivers for 40 years. The"Saturday Evening Post" lamented the passing of thebeloved Burma-Shave signs with this verse:

Gone, But Not Forgotten

Even though the last official Burma-Shave signs camedown in 1965, they weren't forgotten. The SmithsonianInstitution asked for a set almost immediately afterthe decision was made to take the signs off the road.The set they got, the Odell's favorite, is the sameset of signs that can be seen along Becker Road inSpafford.

The publication of Frank Rowesome's "The Verse by theSide of the Road" that same year, not only helped tokeep the signs in people's memories, but over theyears introduced whole new generations of people tothem. It's been continuously in print for almost aslong as the original signs were on the road. This isthe book that introduced me to Burma-Shave.

Many people have taken up collecting old signs ormaking replicas. You can find them in certaincatalogs. But that's not all, when I was in firstgrade I saw a set of neon signs along the New JerseyTurnpike that said something along the lines of:

Stay awakeStay aliveKeep your speedAt 55

I now know who inspired these signs.

And references to them keep popping up. My favorite isfrom the college comic strip "Eyebeam," where a set ofsigns on the beach says:

Her boyfriend's faceWas gray and ashenHair has no placeIn swimwear fashionNair
