In Grenoble (France), Prof. Alim Louis Benabid (CEA, Grenoble) and his team developed a revolucionáry process for brain implants.

A new hybrid man.

They invented the first ‘cerebral pacemaker’ for diseases such as Parkinson.

The stimulated zone is minute, of a size of a grain of rice.


Surgery can last around 10 hours.



The principle of deep stimulation is to send high frequency waves to dysfunctional parts of the brain, either to activate or to inhibit.

The stimulation make that the symptoms of the disease disappear, but is not the cure.

It’s exactly the same as a radio interference.


There are several uses for this ‘pacemaker cerebral’.

It’s already being used successfully to treat severe cases of obsessive-

compulsive disease (OCD) and deep depression.

Since the high frequency waves can supress the appetite, they are now testing it as treatment for obesity.

100 electrodes, with the thickness of a hair, have been implanted in his motor cortex.

These electrodes detect the electric signals emitted by the neurons and send them to a computer.

Later they had to remove the implant because of the risk of infection.

He used the brain! With the thinking he controls the cursor.
