Pastor’s Letter June 14, 2020
Dear Parish Family,
Welcome home! After 12 weeks without being able to celebrate the Eucharist together, we are finally able to gather around the table of the Lord this weekend. How appropriate that this is the Feast of Corpus Christi — the body and blood of Christ. It has been a sad and difficult time for our world. Seven million people have been ill and four hundred thousand have died. Here on Long Island, the number of suffering people and families who have lost loved ones is among the highest in our nation, second only to New York City. The Coronavirus brought out the best in us but was also a serious and painful stress on every part of life. And while this serious disease continues to spread, our efforts have brought enough control for us to resume certain activities — including our worship together. Hallelujah! As we return to Mass, here are some important things to keep in mind: Schedule: This weekend we resume our full Sunday Mass schedule. We will also continue to prepare an online Mass for the homebound and for those who cannot attend because of health concerns. On Monday, June 15, we will begin to celebrate daily Mass with a new schedule. Monday—Wednesday—Friday at 9 AM.
Obligation: Because the Coronavirus continues to spread and is a threat particularly to older members of the community and people with certain health conditions, the obligation to attend Sunday Mass for Catholics on Long Island continues to be lifted. If you are ill or are concerned about risks to your health, you should not come to Mass or to any other public gatherings. Take care of yourself.
Communion: At the present time, Holy Communion will not be distributed at Mass. Guidelines to distribute the Eucharist safely are still being formulated.
Safety: To come to Mass it is required, out of respect for each other, for every person to wear a mask or other face covering. Please also remember the importance of hand washing as you return home from any trip outside. The most important thing we need to do is to keep social distancing. The current guideline of 25% means that we can seat about 150 people in our basilica. This is about what the attendance was like on the one weekend when the obligation was lifted and people came voluntarily. So I think we should be well within that guideline. People have suggested many ways of doing this from requiring reservations, to taking numbers, or counting heads and locking the door! None of these seems very satisfactory. For our community, I think the best way is to simply ask your cooperation. We have taken one positive step, the closing of every other pew. Beyond that, we need to ask people to be careful and courteous about keeping distance. People, like families, who come together may sit closely. Others should keep and respect the six-foot rule.
Music: We will have instrumental music and our cantors but we will ask you to listen and not to sing out loud. This is the first and last time that we will ever encourage you not to sing.
Living with this pandemic has taken a lot of getting used to. Realities, policies, and other information seem to change every day. Here at Sacred Heart we will do our best to keep up and I hope you will be patient and understanding as we return to the center of our parish life — we are the body of Christ. Welcome home!
Welcome Home
Sincerely yours in Christ! Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Religious Education
We know and love the Catholic Faith because, over many years, women and men have practiced the Faith and passed it on to us.
We “pay it forward.” We pass on the Faith by our attitudes and actions in many ways.
Serving as a catechist is a particular way of doing this.
Religious Education Classes Yes we are planning a fall program and will announce our plans as soon as the fall
education guidelines are received for Long Island. First Holy Communion We are still considering ways to celebrate First Holy Communion for the Spring class!
We thank all our catechists for a wonderful year of passing on the faith. If you would like
to serve as a catechist in the upcoming year please email religious education at:

For months our church buildings have been closed. We have been unable to gather together for Mass, to receive the Eucharist in physical form. Now, churches are beginning to re-open, but the opportunity to receive the Eucharist is still limited, if available at all; yet, this Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. Of course, there is the Act of Spiritual Communion, but that likely does not feel the same. It seems a very ironic feast to be observing at this time. But maybe we can look at it as a “teachable moment.” The center of this feast is the Christ, nothing more and nothing less. We still have Jesus. He still nourishes us and unites us and calls us to nourish one another. Eucharist is another word for Thanksgiving. We can still be thankful for the gift Jesus is to us, and we can still be gift to each other. While we anticipate the day we will be back at Mass, receiving Communion in physical form, we can truly celebrate this Solemnity in all its glory here and now.
Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional Catholic School Members of the parish are invited to share in the solemn liturgy and commencement exercises for the OLH Class of 2020. This will be in virtual form. On Sunday, June 14, the official OLH liturgy and graduation ceremony will be premiered on YOUTUBE at 2PM.
While the current school year has become a home and school partnership since mid-March, the faculty and staff at Our Lady of the Hamptons continues to provide a powerful academic program for the students from pre-school through Prep 8. Using several online resources and daily face-to-face communication, students will be well prepared to join in what we pray will be the “grand re-entry” into the school building in September. At this time, there is space available n the pre-school program for both three and four year olds at the St. Rosalie’s campus, and very limited possibilities in grades K-8. Understanding the new demands that may be made on east End placement for September, OLH will do all that it can to work with and accommodate new families. Information about OLH is available on the school’s website www.olh.org or by calling 631-283-9140 for print materials. Interviews and virtual tours can be set up. The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation partners with the Catholic elementary schools of the Diocese of Rockville Centre to provide partial financial assistance for families seeking admission to school. The application process is done online and is accessible through the website: https://www.tomorrowshopefoundation.org/ Community fund-raising activities to benefit the programs at OLH have bee suspended during this pandemic period. The school does depend upon special events to supplement tuition and parish subsidy. Community members are invited to take part in the online auction of goods and services that would have been part of recent spring activities. Log on to https://www.32auctions.com/OLH2020
Online Giving In an active parish like Sacred Hearts, it is important for us to have consistent and reliable support from our members. The events of this spring have made that even more evident. You will be able to help us receive consistent support if you choose one of these methods. This will enable us to receive your generosity even if you are away from us for travel and vacation or in unusual times, like the present, when we are not able to attend as we wish.
Please take a moment to consider one of these ways of giving:
Experience shows that the greatest concern people have about automatic giving is that they will feel uncomfortable when the collection is taken up on Sunday. If you take a look at your Sunday envelopes you will see a box to check that says: I contribute using firstFruits. So you still have an envelope you can place (empty) in the basket. For more information visit: www.shjmbasilica.org and click on Ways to Give

Mailing your Contribution
While this is not automatic giving, mailing your contribution is perfect for those who prefer to write a check and who do not wish to begin online or automatic contribu-tions. Mailing your envelopes to us weekly or monthly is a tried and true solution. Just use our mailing address: Sacred Hearts Basilica, 168 Hill Street, Southampton, NY 11968
firstFruits Giving firstFruits is a way of authorizing Sacred Hearts to receive your contributions on a weekly or monthly basis. All you need to do is provide us a voided check or your bank routing number and account number. You can obtain a form for this on our website www.shjmbasilica.org. After providing your account information you just tell us how much you wish to contribute and we do the rest. You can change your amount or cancel the contributions at any
Online Banking If you access your checking account online you probably already know that you can make payments and contributions without needing to write a pa-per check. Using your online account you can set up a recurring contribution to Sa-cred Hearts in the amount and frequency that you desire. Just use your envelope number as your account number so that we can acknowledge your gift.
PayPal If you use PayPal to pay for things you buy online you can also use it to make regular contributions to Sacred Hearts. It is also a way that you can use your credit card to make contributions, even if you are not a PayPal account holder. You can set up a PayPal contribution or recurring contribution by clicking the Donate button on our website: www.shjmbasilica.org
