The Morning of the MagiciansFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaThe Morning of the Magicians, rstpublished as Le Matin des magiciens, waswritten by Louis Pauwels and JacquesBergier in 1960. It became a best seller, rst in French, then translated intoEnglish in 1963 as The Dawn of Magic, and later released in the United States asThe Morning of the Magicians. A Germanedition was published with the titleAufbruch ins dritte Jahrtausend(Departure into the third Millennium). In a generalized and wide rangingoverview of the occult, the bookspeculates on a variety of Forteana, mysticism and conspiracy theories such assecret societies, ancient prophecies, alchemical transmutation, a giant racethat once ruled the Earth, and the NazcaLines.[1] It also includes speculations suchas German occultism and supernaturalphenomena conspiracy theory that theVril Society and the Thule Society werethe philosophical precursors to the Naziparty.[2]The book has been credited with playing asignicant role in bringing these kinds of ideas into the popular culture, spurringa revival of interest in the occult during the 1960s and '70s, and being aforerunner to the popularization of New Age ideas.[3] In a 2004 article for SkepticMagazine, Jason Colavito wrote that the book's tales of ancient astronautspredated Erich von Dniken's works on the topic, and that the ideas are so closeto the works of H. P. Lovecraft such as "The Call of Cthulhu" or At the Mountainsof Madness (published in 1928 and 1931 respectively) that Colavito claims it isprobable that Lovecraft's ction directly inspired the book.[4] Notably short onreferences or sources, the book has also come under criticism.[1]
