The More You ReadSharing stories, talking and singing with your children every day helps your childs development in so many ways. Reading and sharing stories can: Help your child get to know sounds, words and language, and develop early literacy skills Learn to value books and stories Spark your childs imagination and stimulate curiosity Help your childs brain, social skills and communication skills develop Help your children to learn the difference between realand make-believe Help your child understand change and new or frightening events, and also the strong emotions that can go along with them Just by looking at books with your child, you can be a great storyteller and a good model for using language and books. Your child will learn simply by watching you hold a book the right way and seeing how you move through the book by gently turning the pages. Reading stories with children also has many benefits for grown-ups!!!! The special time you spend reading together with your child / children, promotes bonding and helps to build relationships. At St Marys Catholic School, we value and encourage our students to read every single day. We do this by: Daily reading group rotations, which focus on using key reading strategies The sharing of bigbooks and chapter books with the class Exposing children to a variety of quality literature and teaching the children to be critically literate Providing the children with home readers, which the children can share with their families during home work time. The More You Read… Sharing stories, talking and singing with your children every day helps your child’s development in so many ways. Reading and sharing stories can:

Help your child get to know sounds, words and language, and develop early literacy skills

Learn to value books and stories

Spark your child’s imagination and stimulate curiosity

Help your child’s brain, social skills and communication skills develop

Help your children to learn the difference between ‘real’ and ‘make-believe’

Help your child understand change and new or frightening events, and also the strong emotions that can go along with them

Just by looking at books with your child, you can be a great storyteller and a good model for using language and books. Your child will learn simply by watching you hold a book the right way and seeing how you move through the book by gently turning the pages. Reading stories with children also has many benefits for grown-ups!!!! The special time you spend reading together with your child / children, promotes bonding and helps to build relationships. At St Mary’s Catholic School, we value and encourage our students to read every single day. We do this by:

Daily reading group rotations, which focus on using key reading strategies

The sharing of “big” books and chapter books with the class

Exposing children to a variety of quality literature and teaching the children to be critically literate

Providing the children with home readers, which the children can share with their families during home work time.

On Wednesday this week, students gathered during morning prayer to meditate together as a whole school. Our focus was on a meditation for “All Saints’ Day” (1st November) and “All Souls Day” (2nd November). At this time of year, students are very excited for Halloween and the sweet treats they will receive. However, the word ‘Halloween’ actually means ‘Saint’s Eve’. On Saturday and Sunday, Catholics all over the world remember all of the very Holy people who are now in Heaven, looking over us and helping us to become more like Jesus. We also think of all those people close to us in our lives, who have passed and are no longer with us. We pray that their sins are forgiven and that they are now with God, who watches over all of us. Meditating together allows children to quieten their minds, slow their breathing and feel the presence of God. In our busy, noisy world, it may be the only time in their day that they can relax their active minds and focus on the present. Parents and community members are always more than welcome to join us for our whole school meditation gatherings and daily prayer. We gather for prayer every Wednesday morning at 8:35am in the junior play area.
