Introduction

Remember how Saturday morning feels? The moment after you’ve first woken up and you’re partially still slaying dragons in your dreaming mind? It’s when the dream subsides and you

take that first big breath filling you with a sense of accomplishment that you think, It feels good to be alive.

You don’t even have to open your eyes, yet. Breathing is the only thing on your to-do list. No thoughts cloud your mind. No worries weigh you down. And you can smile.

But it’s already a nostalgic moment when, inevitably, the remind-er bells start ringing—call my brother today, fix the car, try to work out. You have to open your eyes because that’s what we do in this world. So you make a mental note to hold onto that first feeling you had because you know that’s what life should be like.

The Moralean Way gives you that life.

By taking experiences and philosophies, and applying them to our lives today, The Moralean Way shows you how to create the life you know you should be living. This book addresses specific issues we all deal with—addiction to iPhones, always saying “yes,” feeling

unmotivated—and gives insights on how to tackle each problem in an individualized way. Most importantly, it shows you how to find, and keep, that Saturday morning feeling of complete peace, balance, happiness, and awareness.

However, it is not a rule book. It is merely a guide. It is meant to give you direction to better understanding your life. Whether you’re struggling with sleeping, your marriage, or the idea of dying, you will find advice for these problems we all face—sometimes just knowing you’re not alone is all you need.

The ideas of The Moralean Way might shake you up a bit, but that’s the goal. Too often, people sleep through life, and this book is the shock of cold water that many of us need. It wakes you up to the idea of the life you know you should be living and gives you the tools to make it happen.

You vs. Everyone Else

When was the last time you spent an entire hour devoted only to yourself? If you’re still trying to remember, then it’s about time you did. Even though religion, teachers,

and parents often tell us to put others first, they frequently forget the lesson on how important it is to take time for ourselves.

Seeing to our own needs is just as important, if not more, as see-ing to the needs of others. If we neglect ourselves, we’ll be of no use to anyone else. We are more likely to feel overwhelmed, irritable, and under-appreciated when we mismanage our time between friends, family, and work. If we are constantly answering phone calls from our boss, running errands for our family, and saying, “Yes” to every invi-tation from friends, we might as well throw in organizing a funeral because we’re going to kill ourselves.

Stress, depression, anxiety and hypertension are all symptoms of our society. When our psyches are backed into a corner, they react. So,

Page 14: The Moralean Way - by George R.Morales

when we push ourselves to the limit without rest or recovery, we start to see these negative results. Our lives are very demanding today, but if we don’t start taking regular time-outs, we’re going to pay for it sooner or later.

Start by spending one hour each week doing something completely devoted to you. It can be time for meditating, reading that book you’ve been working on for months, taking a yoga class, seeing a movie alone, or making something. It works because you learn things about yourself just like you would with anyone else. You start to re-member how talented you used to be at making the perfect pancake in college or that you love foreign films. Being alone is like spending time with an old friend. There is no pressure to impress anyone and the time is about enjoying it.

You can increase this amount to whatever is necessary for you, but be sure to always keep that hour. Balancing busy schedules is difficult, but one hour a week is easier than you think. It’s one more step to reducing stress in your life and giving you a more balanced perspective. There’s always time for that.

Materialistic vs. Minimalistic

As a culture, we appear extremely materialistic. When the American Dream is to own a house and a car, who wouldn’t label us as that. We have mega-malls, McMansions, and

millionaires. We all want something. But is it wrong?Yes and no.The word materialism has been demonized for centuries, not be-

cause of people’s want for material goods, but because of the effect this wanting has. So society adds a side of guilt with our order of materialism as a way to protect us from ourselves. For most of us, this guilt is enough to keep us from maxing out credit cards, stealing purses, or missing sons’ baseball games for more work.

However, it becomes a problem when our basic needs have long since been met and we start using materialism as a way of life. This type of life is dictated by a never-ending itch for more. More money, more gadgets, more space. We start to think that if we could just get

one more bedroom, one more pair of shoes, one more TV, that we’d be happy. But happiness isn’t that simple.

That’s the key, though. Keeping life simple. This doesn’t mean sell everything you have and try your hand at living off the land—if you’ve always wanted to, though, go for it. This means finding a middle ground between abundance and absence. We have basic needs and, whether we like it or not, to keep up with society today those cover more than just food, water, and shelter.

To have the job you love you may need two phones, plane tickets, and an apartment in the city, but see those as necessities rather than a guilt trip. Just be sure to keep yourself in check. Enjoy the spoils of your life, but remember that happiness isn’t bought from a shelf.

Stimulation vs. Meditation

Turn off your phone, TV, and music; find a quiet place. Now sit in silence for ten minutes. Time yourself.

How did you do? If you’re not used to meditating, you probably had an impulse to check your phone, see who did what in the White House, or turn on some background noise because it seemed eerily quiet. This is completely normal.

We are constantly over stimulated and without it we feel like something is missing. Even our kids are over stimulated. Watch a current cartoon versus something like Tom and Jerry and you’ll be amazed that kids could be entertained without speeding images and an abundance of dialogue. Nowadays, if anything isn’t moving right away, we change the channel.

Although we have to accept technological advancements and ap-preciate the good that comes from having everything at our fingertips,
