Artist Statement
My Art deals with abstracting the human form and how color can provoke a certain
mood, and thus convey a specific characteristic of the subject. The chemistry
of these elements inspires my work to empower color to a positive meaning
through the avenue of paint.
Throughout my life, certain colors were spoken of as a negative force around
me. The words ugly and inferior were often referring to the African American black skin. I was very aware of the characteristics of color
and how powerful they can be. So as an artist I paint because through my eyes all
colors signify an expressive, beautiful quality that relates to a positive language. Through
the language of painting, I find a happy medium of verbal expression utilizing color
and the human form.
I paint because I enjoy the natural quality and flexibility of the paints. They
convey an attitude and a mood in my work. My paintings are build up through layers,
applied with long strokes of acrylic paint on wood panel. The wood panel is durable and
customize to whatever shape and size desired at the time. I utilize the human form
as my subject and the colors are to reinforce the language of my paintings. Many of my
ideas come from occurrences in my past and present life. I also observe characteristics of people's lives and formulate a color to that personality. The human form and color are
dominant and powerful components separately and combine.
My paintings are all about the language we use and how it affects the nature of our
behavior. Through the right words we can choose to express ourselves in a positive way and allow our individuality to
shine
