As the year draws to a close, we have a great deal for which to be thankful as an organization that represents an overwhelming majority of U.S. investment in Africa. In my view the most promising aspect of the year, has been a growing trust and relationship between the U.S. Government (USG) and The Corporate Council on Africa. There has always been and perhaps always will be a tension between government and the private sector anywhere in the world. That tension should exist but it should be a healthy tension. We can neither have a healthy domestic economy nor be effective in supporting African development without this. It has taken a long time to get to this point in Washington, but I am optimistic that the public and private sectors are beginning to understand one another, at least regarding the importance of U.S. private investment in Africa. If this can be so for the final two years of the Obama Administration, I am confident it will continue into the next Administration, regardless of party. There was significant cooperation during the Heads of State Summit in August. CCA alone conducted twenty-three major events parallel to the USG sessions that involved at least nine Heads of State, and dozens of Ministers of African Governments. Many of our programs, especially the PowerAfrica luncheon was in full cooperation with the U.S. Government, including the White House, USAID and OPIC. The relationship with the U.S. Department of Commerce and USTR has seldom been anything but positive as we work together in planning and execution on TradeAfrica. Our working group on trade facilitation has been an excellent and ongoing effort in breaking down trade barriers, especially with East Africa, so that both the regional economy and the U.S. economy can Continued on next page... SAVE THE DATECCA Agribusiness Infrastructure & Investment Summit

April 1-2, 2015Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA

CCA welcomes Patricia Sheikh, Director of Agribusiness. Pat will provide leadership for the agribusiness community and will provide strategic thinking and oversight for CCA’s Agribusiness Infrastructure & Investment Summit

on April 1-2, 2015 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.Pat served as the Deputy Administrator for the Office of Capacity Building and Development at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), from 2006 until her retirement in January 2014. In that capacity, she oversaw all global agricultural development and trade programs. She was also responsible for directing U.S. foreign policy objectives as they relate to foreign assistance,

including food aid. From 1997-2006, she served as the Deputy Administrator of International Trade Policy at FAS. As the Agency’s lead for trade policy, she was the architect of USDA’s Africa’s trade and development strategy and the Department’s North Asia trade policy strategy. North Asia continues to be the largest market for U.S. agricultural products. Her extensive work in agricultural affairs that spans a career of 39 years puts her in a unique position to tackle the complex challenges associated with agricultural sustainability, trade, food security, the role of both women and the private sector in agriculture, and the creation of programs and projects that take into account climate change. She is well known for her knowledge in understanding how to tackle problems along the agricultural value chain, the role of the private sector in agricultural development, and building regulatory structures that meet international standards and ensure food safety for domestic and imported products.

benefit. Likewise the PowerAfrica working group, in cooperation with and support of USAID is a major vehicle of information and new ideas for making PowerAfrica a success. The fruits of PowerAfrica will likely not be seen for at least three to five years, as it takes time to build power plants and set the transmission lines in place. It also takes financing and transparency from host governments. It is our job as an organization to continue to educate and push for reform, while enabling U.S. power companies to become more engaged in Africa. It should be noted that the cooperation between the U.S. Foreign Commercial offices as part of the U.S. Department of Commerce

is growing, as our trade missions are receiving positive support from Commerce. We hope that 2015 will see close cooperation between the Commerce Department and CCA as we both schedule trade missions and work together on common goals, including the goal of helping U.S. companies invest in Africa. Finally, CCA and the African Union have agreed to convene our U.S.-Africa Business Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia November 2-5, 2015. This can be historic and one of the most important demonstrations of U.S. business interest in Africa ever convened. It is vital that this work, and it is equally vital that the U.S. Government and the private sector work together to make it so.
