Greetings from the President, Board of Directors and Executive Director

S P R I N G 2 0 1 9

The Bernard Betel Centre community is not homogeneous. We are blessed to have numerous populations that require specific and unique marketing strategies and outreach. It has become obvious that both fundraising and marketing resources are essential to attain organizational financial sustainability and growth, and that marketing, communications and fund development need to work closely together. We have learned that our diverse demographic (55 to 109 years young) need to be communicated and reached in different ways.

Гейл Гулд

Do you know what the “best kept secret” in Toronto is? Surprise! It’s the Bernard Betel Centre. There are many in the community who repeatedly tell us that we are the “best kept secret.” This is a sentiment that unfortunately is held by potential members, volunteers, and by the general population who are unaware of the breadth and scope of our programs and services. This limited perception and awareness is a fundamental problem which inhibits our growth and ability to raise the necessary funds to sustain ourselves financially.

You may ask, “what are we doing about this?” Good question! Over the past year we have redesigned our website, developed a Branding Guide to standardize our communication, we have tripled our online E-Newsletter subscriptions, and have hundreds of professionally shot photographs representing the array of Betel’s services, programs and diversity of our members.

Throughout the spring, our goal is to develop both a Fund Development and a Marketing Outreach Plan. In order to achieve these important goals, we need your help! Please share the Bernard Betel Centre by bringing in one new member this year, and letting us know if you have contacts that would be willing to act as “Betel Ambassadors” in the community, promoting this wonderful centre and soliciting much needed funds for us. We look forward to hearing from you.

KEEP THE LIGHT – OUR EXHIBITION AT THE MILES NADAL JCCThis past January 2019 we partnered with the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre to celebrate the immense talent of our Russian Oil Painting class with an exhibition titled “Keep the Light”. The Miles Nadal JCC graciously coordinated and hosted the opening Reception for the show, which was a great opportunity for artists, family, friends and the downtown Toronto community to bear witness to the talent and dedication of this remarkable group.

The show itself was a collection of landscape and still-life paintings. Their collected works captured both a deep shared tradition and highly personal experiences. Russian art institutions have long praised a realist approach. These traditional roots form a foundation for many of the featured artists, and simultaneously creates a jumping-point for more gestural and expressive brushstrokes. Many of these artists grew up in Russia and other Eastern European countries and voyaged to Canada. These experiences provided a complex and particular groundwork for considering land and space.

It was a pleasure and an honour to work closely with Miriam Reisher and Viktoria Berdichevski, the dedicated leaders of this program, to curate the exhibition and celebrate their students. We look forward to more exhibitions and showcasing their hard work.

If you are interested in purchasing any of the works in the photos above, or commissioning the group for a particular project, please contact the Coordinator, Recreation, Jen MacDonald at 416-225-2112, ext. 105 or [email protected].

The Russian Oil Painting program at the Bernard Betel Centre is a cornerstone for many older Rus-sian-speaking artists in the Bathurst-Steeles community. These artists attend the program each week despite numerous family obligations, work schedules, and some physical barriers that come along with aging. When asked why she paints, one of the artists responded, “Painting is the most natural thing for me.”

VOLUNTEER SERVICES

Cheryl Besner 416-225-2112, ext. 127 [email protected] Orozco 416-225-2112, ext. 204 [email protected]

HONOURING A LIFETIME COMMITMENT TO VOLUNTEER WORK

TO LEARN ABOUT OUR CURRENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES CONTACT:

Marla Noble joined the volunteer team at the Bernard Betel Centre in 2008 as a Friendly Visitor volunteer. During her first three years, Marla provided friendship and conversation to a woman who was a Holocaust survivor. Following that, she took on a new role assisting in the cafeteria where she is still active today. Last year, she was recognized for reaching the 10 year milestone for volunteer service.

Although active with us for the past 10 years, her volunteer engagement began many years prior to joining our team. Marla attributes her need to give back to the com-munity to her family, and talks about her parents teaching her the importance of Jewish values. When she was 15, Marla recalls sitting alongside her mother as they manned the phones to raise money for muscular dystrophy. This was an event organized by Shoppers Drug Mart, where

Over the years, Marla expanded her passion of giving back to the community in many ways. When she was 16, she volunteered as a Candy Striper at Baycrest Hospital, where she would wheel the medication cart throughout the wards and assist with the Meals on Wheels program. Marla’s efforts excelled in fundraising by raising money for the Leukemia Foundation, Live Aid, the Cana-dian Cancer Society, Juvenile Diabetes, Heart and Stroke and United Chesed of Toronto. Marla is especially proud to have volunteered at the first Toronto area Ronald McDonald House at the age of 17. She helped get the house ready for the grand opening and also worked in the Arts and Crafts shop.

her mother worked as a legal secretary. This is one of Marla’s most cherished volunteer memo-ries. When Marla was just 17 years old, her mother lost her battle with lung cancer and passed away at the young age of 41.

We are thankful that Marla has decided to share her vast experience and generous spirit with our centre over the past 11 years. Despite her own personal challenges she knows that once she arrives at the centre, she is where she is needed. Whether she is assisting in the cafeteria, or visiting with and having a chat with the members. Marla shares her motivation for volunteer-ing: “There is nothing like making that special difference in someone else’s life, and having them leave with a smile on their face.” We thank Marla for her generous and kind spirit, compassion and empathy for people and for a lifetime dedication to volunteer work.

Marla’s love and compassion for people also extends to animals. In December of 2011, she adopted her dog Peekoo from the Toronto Animal Shelter.
