Vol. 25, Issue 4

Former Iola kicker, Connor Frazell, was named to the third-team ALL-MIAA squad November, 2013. He

was presented with his award at the annual Pittsburg State football banquet in January, 2014.

For the 2013 season, including the Mineral Water Bowl, Connor scored 109 total points and was the

team’s second leading scorer. Pittsburg State played Southwest Minnesota in the Mineral Water Bowl and

broke the scoring record by defeating SW Minnesota 90-28. Connor scored a game high 18 points in the

game. He had 15 kickoffs, 12 extra points, and 2 field goals. For the season he made 13 of 15 field

goals and 70 of 71 extra points.

Connor started his collegiate kicking career at Butler Community College and has been the Gorillas

placekicker for the past two seasons. He is looking forward to his Senior year this fall and has high hopes

that Pittsburgh State will make the playoffs for his Senior year.

Connor is the son of Tammi Frazell and the late Jay Don Frazell. He will be dedicating the upcoming

season to his father, whom he lost on 03/13/2014.

Harvey Buckley, longtime employee of The Monarch Cement Company, retired March 31, 2014. Harvey’s career with Mon-arch began in 1979, when the company acquired the Marquette Cement plant in Des Moines, Iowa. He had been employed with Marquette since 1971. He transferred to Humboldt in 1987 and held various managerial positions prior to being promoted to Vice

President of Cement Manufacturing in 2006.

The Humboldt plant went through several major upgrades and changes during Harvey’s tenure at Monarch. These include the addition of the Roller Mill and this past year an upgrade of the Roller Mill, a new Loesche Coal Mill, Precalciners added to the Pre-heater Towers, #5 Finish Mill addition, replacement of the Clinker Coolers, a new portable crushing system at the East Quarry opera-tions, the new Production Control Room, addition of a continuous emission monitor and combining the 3 exhaust stacks upgrades to

comply with the new NESHAP regulations as well as numerous other projects.

Harvey’s plans are to do some fishing, spend time with his wife and their three children; his son Ryan, his wife and their two daughters, his son Craig, and his daughter Elyse. Harvey also will do some traveling and maybe even fit some Kansas City Royals

games in his busy schedule.

Stepping into Harvey’s position is Kenny Miller. Kenny is being promoted to Vice President of Cement Manufacturing. Ken-ny has been with the company for 42 years. He began his employment at Monarch as a Utility Laborer in 1972. In 1973, Kenny became the Bridge Crane Operator/Laborer in Production where he worked for five years. In 1978, Kenny became a Shipping Util i-

tyman, then in 1980, moved to the Maintenance department where he worked for 22 years, advancing from Maintenance Mechanic

Helper to Maintenance Supervisor. On September 1, 2005, Kenny was promoted to Assistant Plant Manager and then to Plant Man-

ager on August 1, 2012.

The following articles were taken from

the Humboldt Union, May 20, 1926

THOSE TEN BIG SILOS (Cont’d from August Issue) President Wulf looks at his watch, we wake up from the

effects of the view, the perspective of which is as far as the eye

can extend, We look down upon the ground and really wish we

were there. We start down President Wulf leading. To us the

coming down is much more difficult than the going up. The presi-

dent does not mind it in the least. Soon he is down and wonder-

ing when we will arrive. The men looked relieved when they see

the “tenderfoot” Scout once more covering the ground. We also

feel better and retrospect back sixty years when the group now

occupied by the great cement is Indian dust; and as Hamlet says:

“Alexander was buried: Alexander returneth into dust ; the dust is

earth; of earth we make loam; and why of that loam, whereto he

was converted, might they not stop a beerbarrel? Imperious

Caesar, dead and turned to clay, might stop a hole to keep the

wind away; O, that earth, which kept the world in awe, should

patch a wall to expel the winter’s flaw.” Perhaps the dust of

many Big Indian Chiefs helped to make good cement walk (SIC)

for the pale face.

This is what it is all about. These ten big silos will now

give the Monarch Cement Company a 300,000 barrel capacity

storage. As there are only about seven cement months in the

year this will enable the plant to run, thereby keeping the men

busy and on the salary list during the winter months. It also ena-

bles the company to fill any large order that might suddenly be

received. Also, in case of some breakage in the machinery, they

will have a sufficient supply on hand to meet all requirements.

Also, the cement improves in quality when it can have time to

age. The chemical action through which it passes enhances it; it

removes a certain impurity the same as iron going through a blast

furnace becomes steel , though in cement the change is not nearly

so great. In a word cement is better when given time to age a

little.

The power house, where we started in is a day’s study,

in itself. President Wulf had some difficulty in penetrating our

thick dome on the subject of electricity and electric motors; and

monsters they are. But the President is resourceful. He thought a

moment and then explained the chemical action in drawing a

glass of beer. Its effervescence, the bubbling and foaming, the

froth on the top of the glass. Here we were right at home and

caught the idea of equalization of power as it was needed.

Nevertheless it left us very dry.

It was now approaching the noon hour. We drove to

the company’s office where we took our departure, being well

repaid for what we saw and learned. A great organization is

the Monarch Cement Company. And to be great it must have a

great president and he must have great lieutenants. Thank you,

Mr. Wulf.

Statistics of the Industry

We here given an excerpt of a paper read by H.F.G. Wulf,

president of the Monarch Cement Company, at a recent Rotary

Club dinner: “You have gotten some idea from the above as to

the magnitude of the cement industry. You will probably be still

more impressed with this after I tell you that the cement mills of

the country last year produced 146,000,000 barrels of cement,

584,000,000 sacks. If this cement had been piled in bags to

form a pyramid, the latter would have been seven times as large

as the Great Pyramid of Cheops, which according to Herodotus

took 10,000 men twenty years to build.

If all the Portland cement made in this country last year

had been used for concrete roadways, these would have been

equivalent to a standard concrete road reaching entirely around

the world at the equator and covering both the land and the

water. If this cement had been made into a solid cube of con-

crete this would have had an edge of over 1500 feet; and would

have formed a giant block of concrete covering fifty acres of

ground and more than two and one-half times as high as the

Washington Monument.

To pack last year’s output required 540,000,000 sacks.

The cloth in these sacks would have covered an area of 145

square miles or over twice that of the District of Columbia. Many

sacks do not come back. To replace these the cement industry

buys annually something like 40,000,000 new sacks. These rep-

resent 20,000,000 pounds of cotton and the product of 2100

looms working every day of the year. These new sacks are

equivalent to a piece of cloth thirty inches wide and 23,000 miles

long.

To ship the product of the American cement mills there

are required at least 600,000 box cars annually. On an aver-

age each day in the year, there passes out of the cement mills of

the country the equivalent of a train of cars over ten miles long.

If the cars required to pack the annual output were placed in one

long line, these would make a train extending from Boston to San

Birth Announcement

Francisco by way of New York, Atlanta, New Orleans, and

Los Angeles.

The industry ranks fourth among American coal

using manufacturers, and annually uses 10,000,000 tons of

coal, 3,100,000 barrels of crude oil, and more than

4,000,000,000 cubic feel of natural gas.

The cement mills of the country last year quarried

over 40,000,000 tons of raw material. They used to blast

this 19,000,000 pounds of dynamite, and the combined

area from which it was excavated would be equivalent to

a huge hole seventy feet deep, covering a space on-half

(SIC) mile square.

It is estimated that the total investment in the Port-

land Cement industry is about $300,000,000, the total

number of employees more than 40,000, and the payroll

at least 70,000,000 annually.
