IntroductionThe Mohawk lived mostly in northern New York

State and across the border in Canada. There were at least 25,000 of them. The Mohawk called themselves Kanien’ Kehake. It meant people of the flint because of the flint quarries in the eastern part of their territory. In the Abenaki language Mohawk meant cowards. No one knows how Native Americans got here.

GamesOne of the most popular games was lacrosse. There

were whole towns that playing on each team. It was a very good game where you had to hurl the ball to a team player and throw it into a special soccer-like goal to win.

Another sport was running. It was sometimes held at the end of Grand Council meetings. The Mohawk also liked chance games. One of their favorite games was the peach pit game. In the winter their favorite game was “Snow Snake.” It was a game where you had to throw a stick a number of times to win.

Homes

The Mohawk lived in longhouses made out of wooden roof and elm bark. The longhouses held up to 20 families. It is 18 to 20 feet long with a raised platforms for sleeping on each side. The Mohawk cook their meals inside their homes.

The role of the men was to hunt, fish and clear the fields for the crops. The woman planted and cared for the crops. The three main crops were corn, bean and squash. They were called the three sisters. The children got wood for the fire and water. Boys learned how to shot a bow and arrow, make traps for bear, and turkey .

The Mohawk tribe had a diet they were on and the food was

nuts, tubers, and berries. They had soup that was made out

of hot water and vegetables . It was made from the plantings

that the cooked on stone. They had crops that they planted

in there garden.

Music and ArtThe Mohawk had music and art in their year.

The Mohawk made arts and crafts like mask carving, wampum, beadwork, porcupine quillwork, designs and pictures.

The Mohawk had music. They played flutes and the water drums.

ReligionNative Americans had special religions. They

called God “Creator” or “Great Spirit.” They believed natural things were under the care of spirits. There were many ceremonies. This included the False Face Society. The False Face Society was used for scaring evil spirits away. At the Maple Festivals everybody gathered sap and boiled it over the fire to make syrup. There were no special religious leaders.
