Day at the Mississippi State Capitol on Tuesday, January 16, 2018,
from 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. on the 1st Floor of the Capitol Rotunda.
The Day at the Capitol event is a way for BAAMS and other stakeholders to promote ABA and allows for ABA providers to network with statewide legislators and other elected officials. PROPOSALS for symposia, panels, papers, and posters are being accepted through Friday,
January 26, 2018. Accepted applicants will be notified on or before Friday, February 2, 2018. Below are the links for submissions.
Symposia include three 20-minute presentations, organized by a chairperson who moderates the 80-minutes session, focused on either empirical research or conceptual, philosophical, historical, or methodological issues. A discussant highlights and integrates the contribution of various speakers in the symposium and moderates questions from the audience. Chairpersons are encouraged to integrate related work.
Panels consist of 3 to 5 speakers selected for some shared interest in an area. Panelists respond to one or more questions or issues, with time allotted for interaction among the speakers and audience. A panel discussion is organized by a chairperson who serves as the session’s moderator
Papers are 20-minute presentations focused on empirical research or conceptual, philosophical, historical, or methodological issues. Papers will be organized into symposia by the conference committee.
Posters report empirical research organized into one session, during which attendees are invited to review the research presented and discuss findings with poster presenter.
WORKSHOPS
Workshop #1
Learning in the Workplace: Using Performance Diagnostics to Improve Staff Performance
Dr. Elizabeth Sellinger, Ph.D., BCBA-D, Institute of Professional Practice
3
The workshop will define OBM/Performance Management and Performance Diagnostics and describe the
levels of analysis applied to organizations. It will identify strategies for implementing more positive
consequences and improving the quality of behavioral feedforward and feedback and help participants become
familiar with a case example utilizing performance management procedures within an educational setting.
Workshop #2
A Behavioral Approach to Language Assessment for Children with Autism
Mark L. Sundberg, Ph.D., BCBA-D, Sundberg and Associates
This workshop will describe the application of Skinner’s (1957) analysis of verbal behavior to language
assessment for children with special needs. Participants will learn how to use The Verbal Behavior Milestones
Assessment and Placement Program (The VB-MAPP) as a way to identify a child’s existing language and social
skills. In addition, participants will learn how to use the VB-MAPP Barriers Assessment as a way to identify
potential language, learning, or social barriers that may be impeding a child’s skill acquisition. Participants will
then learn how to use the results of a child’s VB-MAPP assessments to identify intervention priorities and
establish IEP goals.
Invited Speakers: Dr. Amanda Kelly (Behavior Babe) will present via webcast on Public Policy
and Julie Riley will present on using ABA with teachers and school districts.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello BAAMS,
First, I would like to welcome all of our new Executive Committee Members! Thank you all for your willingness to serve and
help promote ABA across our state. I would also like to thank the outgoing members of the EC, Dan Gadke, Kate Kellum,
Keith Radley, Matt Davidson, Walt Chamberlain, Evan Dart, and Sarah Kowalczyk for your hard work over the past 3 years in
making BAMMS a successful and meaningful organization.
In February of 2018, BAAMS will celebrate its 3rd anniversary. Since the first meeting in February 2015, our membership has
grown from 33 founding members to 56 full members, 45 student members, and 6 affiliate members. I am excited to see this
growth continue and look forward to the upcoming events as ways to promote and advance behavior analysis in Mississippi.
One of the first events of the year is the Capitol Day at the Mississippi State Capitol on Tuesday, January 16 from 8:00 a.m. –
12:00 p.m. on the 1st Floor of the Capitol Rotunda. Please make plans to attend this event as a way to show our presence and
relevance in the state and with legislatures. Although the gains we have made with insurance coverage has been hugely
successful, there is still room to expand ABA coverage for other populations and into other settings. It is also important for
state legislatures to see the impact these changes have on families so we encourage practitioners to invite families to attend as
well.
I am also very excited about the 2nd annual BAAMS Conference on March 1 and 2, 2018 in Bay St. Louis, MS. Thank you to
the Conference Committee for working so hard to put this year’s conference together. We began working on the conference
last May and hope the early and hard work pays off! There will be approximately 14 CEUs offered across both days for
behavior analysts (and hopefully 10 for psychologists). Dr. Mark Sundberg will present a 4 hour workshop on the VB-MAPP
and Dr. Elizabeth Sellinger will present a 4 hour workshop on using Organization Behavior Management in the workplace.
As always, we welcome your input. Your support and participation in BAAMS helps the executive committee do more for
you! Please contact us at [email protected].
Thank you,
Dannell Roberts, Ph.D., BCBA-D
