The mission of Cincinnati Union Bethel is to

communities to realize their greatest potential.

Dear Friends,

180 years! Cincinnati Union Bethel (CUB) is the oldest social service agency in the Midwest. We know this because in 1830, a pub-

lication in Cincinnati wrote about the agency and what a success it was. By 1830, we were already serving the community and mak-

ing a difference.

The year 1830 was a long time ago — before Proctor & Gamble, the United Way of Greater Cincinnati, Kroger, and Graeter’s. Like

these other Cincinnati greats, Cincinnati Union Bethel has established a reputation in Cincinnati for excellence and innovation in

meeting the needs of its clients. This year, the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations recognized CUB’s outstanding internal

processes and governance by awarding the agency the OANO Standards for Excellence certification. CUB is the only nonprofit in

Cincinnati to have received this certification.

What truly makes us a leader is that we continue to enhance our current programs. Consider:

Our early childhood program was selected to participate in United Way’s Success by 6 Winning Beginnings and 4C for

Children’s Strengthening Families programs.

We are beginning a renovation of the Anna Louise Inn after receiving a top ranking from the Ohio Housing Finance

Agency in the Permanent Supportive Housing category, successfully securing approximately $10 million in low-income

housing tax credits.

Off the StreetsSM is so innovative and successful that we received funding from the National Institute of Corrections to

provide consultation for replication of the program in Aurora (Denver), CO.

For 180 years, we have been committed to providing quality services to the community. We thank each of you for the contributions

you have made to CUB and our clients. Together we are helping women, children, families, and communities realize their greatest

potential.

Sincerely,

Stephen T. MacConnell Charley Milton

President and CEO Chair of the Board of Directors

Early Childhood Education Our largest program, CUB Early Learning

Academies served 819 children in the 2009-2010

school year. Best practices indicate that the

potential for learning is greatest during the earliest

years of a child’s life; therefore we provide every

possible learning opportunity to children ages 3-5

years old at four preschools in economically

disadvantaged neighborhoods and public housing

developments on the west side of Cincinnati.

Using the Head Start model, the program provides

a rich variety of activities that foster physical,

mental, social and emotional development,

including daily meals and snacks, health screenings

(physical, dental, vision, hearing, speech, and lead

testing), and family support services. This holistic

approach addresses the special challenges present

in neighborhoods where families have limited

resources. Outcomes

An impressive 78% of the students had age-

appropriate language and literacy skills

89% of the students had age-appropriate social/

emotional skills and gross and fine motor

coordination

88% of the students had appropriate physical

health & development

The Anna Louise Inn

The Anna Louise Inn, located near Lytle Park in

downtown Cincinnati, has been providing safe

and affordable housing for single women since

1909. Now the Inn is going to be even better!

In July 2010, CUB was awarded $10 million in

tax credits from the Ohio Housing Finance

Agency to renovate and repair the Anna Louise

Inn. This will allow us to transition the small

dormitory-style rooms to larger units with a

private bathroom and kitchen. Staying in compli-

ance with historic preservation requirements, the

outside of the building will look the same, just as

the Inn’s mission will remain the same.

Outcomes

99% of the women at the Inn are living on

incomes at or below $14,550 per year

In 2010, the Inn housed 263 women, who

were experiencing a housing crisis

38 women have lived at the Inn for 3 or

more years and call it home

Off the StreetsSM

Off the StreetsSM, a program that addresses the

health and recovery needs of prostituted women,

was in response to community, criminal justice,

and social service concerns that the practice of

arresting and jailing women involved in

prostitution was ineffective. The goal now is to

assist the women in moving toward safety,

recovery, empowerment, and community

reintegration.

Paired with a peer facilitator who’s had similar

life experiences, women in Off the StreetsSM are

helped with emergency needs and connected to

housing, medical care, mental health and

substance abuse services, education, and

employment.

Outcomes

Of the women who stayed in the program 30 days or longer:

96% reported no longer engaging in prostitution

88% reported no longer using drugs and/or alcohol

76% obtained stable housing

69% obtained employment and/or returned to school
