It’s no secret that theeconomy has seen betterdays, which often makesjob hunting and starting acareer seem like a daunt-ing task for many recentgraduates.
Thanks to UNC’sCareer Services, thesestudents don’t have toface it alone.
“I think CareerServices is definitely agreat resource for stu-dents,” said SamanthaBrescia, a senior journal-ism major and a formerintern with CareerServices. “They provide alot of opportunities to go
into their office and haveyour resume critiqued,and they also have manyopportunities for job list-ings on their website, so Idefinitely think it is agreat resource that stu-dents should utilizemore.”
Renee Welch, thedirector of CareerServices, said the centercan critique University ofNorthern Colorado grad-uates’ resumes, cover let-ters and applications forboth jobs and graduateschools. Counselors canalso help graduatesensure their graduateprogram essays match theprogram’s requirements.

Many students willwalk across the stageFriday and Saturday withproud family and peerslooking on. The membersfrom Housing andResidential Educationand Tara Schoenherr’sfamily will be no differentas they watch her takethose meaningful steps.
Schoenherr, a seniorresident assistant inSouth Hall, began work-ing as an RA in HarrisonHall her sophomore yearand became a senior RAher junior year.
She is a human servic-es major and was recentlynominated for the EricH a r s h b a r g e rDistinguished ServiceAward, which is designat-ed to reward studentswho dedicated their timeand effort toward the dif-
ferent residence halls.Schoenherr lived
Harrison as a freshmanand explained how shewas the leastlikely student tobecome an RAthe followingyear.
“I feel I bringthe perspectiveto being an RA ofthe person whowas not like yours t e r e o t y p i c a lRA,” Schoenherrsaid.
Schoenherrsaid WhitneyNewman, coordinator ofAcademic Programs forHousing and ResidentialEducation, has had animmense effect on her lifeand career working inHRE.
“I had this great womanthat I worked with whoreally pressured me intoapplying and didn’t give
up on me,” Schoenherrsaid. “She was the halldirector for Harrison andis now an amazing mentor
in my life.”S c h o e n h e r r
applied for theRA position,thinking it wasonly going to befor a year.
“Whitney andother people whohave worked inhousing with mereally took aninterest in me anddidn’t give up onme,” she said.
“They really changed mypath and impacted me, andthat’s my inspiration movingforward and be able to havethat same role in studentslives that I have been so for-tunate to have.”
Schoenherr is highlyenthusiastic when help-ing out the students onher floor and would
engage them with activi-ties like root beer pongand other games.
She also was awardedsenior RA of the year, whichis voted upon by differentdepartment supervisors anddetermine from which build-ing’s senior RA should win.
“The biggest piece forme is the kind of mentor-ship toward other RAs inthe hall,” Schoenherr. “Iam a resource for themand be a role model forthem.”
She was the onlyreturning senior RA thissemester and made it apoint to being a good rolemodel beyond her resi-dence hall to the entirecampus. She tries to notonly be there for the otherRAs when they have a cri-sis on their hands but alsoto be the one they can calllooking for someone to do
Counselors help with job, internship searchsalaries and decidingbetween multiple joboffers.
Career Services is alsoproviding these servicesand more during theDenver Career ConnectWorkshop at 6 p.m. May10 at the UNC DenverCenter at Lowry, 1059Alton Way Bldg. 758. Theworkshop will featurethree sessions includinghow to use social mediato aid in the job search,successful interviewing
techniques and individ-ual resume and cover let-ter critiques. The work-shop is $5 for alumni.
Social media websitesare another tool Welchsuggests graduates use intheir job search.
“In my opinion, it’smad to not do it,” Welchsaid. “There are hugeadvantages to studentswho learn about net-working.”
For many graduates,their first job after gradu-ation may be their first
job in a professional set-ting, which is somethingthat graduates shouldtake into considerationconcerning the way theyact.
“I would say as they’restarting to work, gradu-ates need to be mindful ofthe culture they arebecoming a part of,”Welch said. “Showing uplate is not acceptable.Watch your colleaguesaround you and learnprofessionalism. Find amentor to help you gain
skills, learn the culture,gain access to anotherrole or advance. A men-torship is important fornew graduates.”
Welch said graduatesshould do their best tostay involved in theirmajor fields in some way.
“If a student is experi-encing unemployment, Iencourage them to findways to stay connected,”Welch said. “Join anational association,shadow employers, vol-unteer — anything they
can do to stay connectedin the field is huge. Try tomaintain their skill set,try to stay connected andaccess Career Services.”
Counselors with CareerServices are available tohelp students find jobs,internships and otherways to stay connected.

This Saturday, UNC’sCollege of Performing andVisual Arts will unleash its tal-ented students into the world.
For one graduate, the tal-ents she obtained from PVAwill be of benefit as sheapproaches the real world ina matter of weeks.
Christine Allwine, a 22-year-old from Brighton, willgraduate with a visual artsdegree with an emphasis ingraphic design. She will alsograduate with a Germanminor.
She intends to use whatshe has learned at theUniversity of NorthernColorado to the fullest in thenext step of her life.
Allwine’s experiences atUNC are something she cher-ishes both personally andeducationally.
“I wouldn’t trade it foranything,” Allwine said. “Itwasn’t some big and crazy
thing like some of the otherschools (in Colorado).”
Her time here has taughtAllwine a widerange of abilitieswithin the world ofart, like painting,drawing andsculpting, but herskills in writing,illustrating andgraphic designhave recently beenuseful to her.
Allwine chose to illustrateand draw a children’s bookfor an independent studiescourse project, and she is cur-rently looking at three pub-lishing companies that couldpotentially help get her workin stores.
The story revolves arounda kitten that does not have atail and is made fun of by itspeers. By the end of the story,the feline realizes that it isunique in its own way — justlike everyone else.
On the other hand, herspecialization in the field of
graphic design helpedAllwine receive an internshipat a company called
P i c k l e h e l mP r o d u c t i o n s ,which has loca-tions in Greeleyand Denver.
“I enjoyedworking there,”Allwine said. “Theprojects werediverse and the
people there were nice.”During her time at
Picklehelm, Allwine helpedwith work on an adventure-themed comic book“A.T.F.[E].” (Alcohol, TobaccoFirearms and Explosives)about “Jimbob JayWeinstein,” his sidekick“Rockmore Rancid” and hisGerman shepherd. The herdattempts to defeat an enemynamed “Meth.”
Allwine helped designposters as advertisements forthe comic book. She also cre-ated a video for the book,which was posted onto
YouTube.She drew sketches for
the company so it could seewhat her technique waslike.
After her time workingfor the company, Allwinewas offered a permanentposition that she has takenhigh interest in.
Her internship requiredsome lighter tasks since shewas also going to school. Afull-time position atPickehelm would meanAllwine would have biggerrole in the comic book andcould potentially helporganize and design thecompany’s website.
She would begin in Juneor July if she decides totakes the job.
“It’s exciting and strangeto think that there is nomore school,” she said.“You realize you’ve been inschool for almost 20 yearsand then you have to go outinto the real world.”

Athletic history made during class of 2012 tenure
Not often dostudents getthe opportuni-
ty to see school historyhappen right in front ofthem during their tenureat a university. For theclass of 2012 at theUniversity of NorthernColorado, we’ve beenawfully spoiled.
The football programreceives the most of theattention from the media,the fans and the athleticdepartment. The transi-tion to the Division-Ilevel hasn’t gone assmoothly for football aswe all would have hoped,but other programs onthis campus have morethan picked up the slack.
If you haven’t noticed,UNC athletic teams havequietly earned eight BigSky Conference champi-onships in the last threeyears.
The two beats I’ve
covered for The Mirrorfor the better part ofthree years, women’s vol-leyball and men’s basket-ball, have been the posterchildren in UNC’s transi-tion to the D-I level.
In 2009, volleyball ledthe charge in changingthe sports culture ofmediocrity at UNC. Afterback-to-back wins overEastern Washington andPortland State in consec-utive nights, the volley-ball team earned the firstBig Sky Conference tour-nament title for any pro-gram on this campus.
The volleyball pro-gram, led by coachLyndsey Benson, earnedits second title and NCAAtournament appearancethis season.
If Benson is not onyour Christmas card listyet, she needs to be.
On the men’s basket-ball side, the 2010-11team inked its spot inUNC history as it earnedthe program’s first BigSky regular season title,conference tournamenttitle and NCAA tourna-ment appearance.
You’d be hard-pressed
to find a time that thestudent body was moreexcited than in thatmonth span.
In our four years oncampus, we’ve seen theprogram lose coach TadBoyle to the bigger budg-et of the University ofColorado, but inherited2011 Big Sky Coach of theYear B.J. Hill.
Devon Beitzel becamea household name andnow we have redshirtsophomore TevinSvihovic as the new faceof the men’s basketballprogram.
For my fellow seniorsof the 2012 class, I hopeyou appreciated whattranspired in our athleticdepartment during ourtime here.
Any time we everreturn as alumni or arearound the water coolerat work talking about ourcollege days, we will havethe bragging rights to saywe saw UNC history thatcannot be duplicated.

When she graduatesSaturday, Schoenherr saidshe will miss the differentpeople she has met while inher position.
“I am also really excitedbecause Whitney and theother hall directors I haveworked with throughout mytime at UNC will be there,”Schoenherr said. “A lot ofpeople who have reallyinvested in my success will beable to see it pay off, and thatfeels really good.”
She will attend theUniversity of Utah to receiveher master’s degree in educa-tional leadership and policy,which is another programNewman encouraged her topursue.
She will also work as theassistant residential educa-tion coordinator, which is ahall director type of position.The tasks will include super-vising the RAs and lookingafter the building.
After her master’s degree,she says she can see herself asa director of housing or in adean of students’ office.
Schoenherr said shewouldn’t turn down workingat UNC in the future but isexcited to live in another statefor a while. The added perkfrom the college job scene isthe ability to virtually liveanywhere there is a college.
During the summer, shewill still be working for HREand plans to move to SaltLake City in July.
