Page | 1 Dear Members, We are moving into that hectic, yet enjoyable holiday time of year for families and for our club. Holidays are also a time to reflect on the accomplishments as a club over the past 81 years. When our speaker from Elim School presented last month and started his presentation by acknowledging all that PHWC has done for Elim with over $6,000.00 in donations over the years, we all should remember that what we do does make a difference in our communities. I am grateful for the efforts of our members to come up with programs and projects that assist others. Our major fundraiser is on Saturday, December 14 th and as a PHWC member we welcome your efforts to make this a success by choosing to be part of the House Walk in some way. With your assistance, PHWC will be able to continue our contributions to many worthwhile schools and organizations. Check out the Newsletter to see how you can help with the House Walk to continue our philanthropic efforts. November is the month to honor and remember our Veterans and active duty service members. The Public Services Department has planned a wonderful program for our November meeting. Be sure to join us and consider filling a Christmas stocking or donating items to fill stockings for our Women in the Military. Find a way to thank Veterans and service members this month. PHWC will be planning a Service Project for Making a Difference Day in January, 2020. More information will be provided at our meetings. As we approach Thanksgiving, I am thankful to be part of PHWC. The enthusiasm and generosity of our members is so evident in what we do as club members. Thank you for working together to make a difference. Art Department - Darlene Prium/Judy Montell Ladies, last reminder for Friday, November 15th, 7:30 p.m. Join us to see the play “Laughter On The 23rd Floor,” a comedy. Playing at Palos Park Recreation Center, presented by the Palos Village Players. WE have reserved a block of tickets, to be aid for that evening at the box office. Inspired by a staff writer on the Sid Caesar’s “Show of Shows” it should be entertaining and funny. Tickets are $18. If you need a ride, please call Judy Montell or Darlene Prium.

Conservation - Ann Sullivan/Chris Wilcox Here are some tips with the weather changing, and fall fast approaching from your friends in the Conservation department...

• Set back your thermostat. This seems so simple, but even a few degrees can lower your bill.

• Close that flue! An open flue damper draws warm air out of your house 24 hours a day.

• Check water heater setting. 120 degrees F is more than adequate for most people.

Thank you to all of you that are supporting our collections. Please remember to bring pop tops for the Ronald McDonald house, eyeglasses for the Lions Club, used ink cartridges for recycling by the Palos Heights library, and our on-going collection through December of bubble wrap and small shipping boxes for The Center. Again, these are used for their Ebay business, to ship out crafted items, as well as donated items. Please know that they are very appreciative of the 40 plus boxes, and two large garbage bags of bubble wrap already brought in to them.

Enjoy the fall colors, recycle and repurpose!

Membership – Tracy Heilman Attendance at the October meeting was somewhat improved over the September meeting. Total number present 53. This number is still down a bit from last year’s meeting totals. We need to encourage our friends, that are members to attend and to our friends that are not members, we need them to join. Please welcome new member:

Darlene Dunmore Folliard

Darlene’s information is listed below under Yearbook.

Yearbook - Sherry TerMaat

Please update your Yearbook to reflect the following new member:

Darlene Dunmore Folliard – [email protected] 7320 Pottawatomi Dr., Palos Heights, IL 60463 (708) 860-9385.

Book Review – Marilyn Herrndobler The Book Review Group will meet at 9:30 a.m. on November 7 at the Palos Heights Library. This will be our final meeting until we begin again in the Fall. We will accept dues for the Fall, '19, through Spring, '20, session from those members who wish to pay at that time. It is helpful to know how many members to plan for and to be able to arrange for speakers. Our speaker this month is Dennis F. Depcik, author of “Wouldn't It Be Something.” It is a true story of the long-distance romance that eventually led to his marriage to a delightful young woman he first met as the little sister of a friend of his. He gave no real notice to her at the time and thought of her as "a kid." The book tells of their acquaintance, ups and downs, problems, fears, hopes, and dreams, and does this through sharing their letters over a period of years. It is a read that will remind you of your hopes and dreams of those days and I recommend it! You will not want to miss his presentation!

Int’l Outreach - Kim Prokes/Pam Pyka

Thanks to all who brought medicine bottles and shoes. We are planning on another shipment of medicine bottles after the November meeting. We will continue to collect both of those items throughout the Club year. We are planning another sewing event to make Operation Smile bags on Friday November 15th at the recreation center from 10:00-1:00. Many hands are needed to complete the bags. We will need ladies to press, measure, and cut the fabric. We will also need women willing to bring their portable sewing machines. There will be a sign-up sheet at the November meeting. Even if you do not sign up, you are welcome to join us for an hour or more. We had a very positive experience when we held this event in the spring. Any sturdy, colorful fabric you could donate would be appreciated. Either bring it to the meeting or to the event itself. If you have any questions, contact Pam Pyka or Kim Prokes.

Home Life – Nancy Mitchell/Kathleen Layo

It is again our pleasure to partner with Franklin Public House for Thankful Thursday on Thursday, 11/21 from 4-7 pm. We invite all our members, family and friends to join us for a thankful and enjoyable evening benefiting the "Greater Chicago Food Depository" food pantry in Palos Heights. Those who bring $10 of non-perishable groceries (or a $10 donation) will receive a FREE glass of wine, beer or beverage! In addition, Franklin Public House will also donate $250 worth of food items! Other acceptable donations include items that cannot be bought with food stamps such as Pet food, cleaning supplies, paper products, soap, laundry detergent, diapers, sanitary napkins and toilet paper. Most of which can be bought at the Dollar store. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending Thankful Thursday on November 21! Questions? Please call Nancy (708-448-5135). Many of us stayed and had an appetizer or light dinner. It was a fun event and very worthwhile!

Education – Nancy Clark-Jurek

Please continue to donate greeting cards, box tops, and Campbell soup labels! Looking to donate books? You can donate used books at the Palos Library for the Friends of the Library sale which will be held in February of 2020. Check out the AWESOME “Wizard of Oz” display throughout October in the Palos Heights Library. Selfie with a Scarecrow is the buzz in the Heights! Scarecrows will be placed throughout Palos Heights as part of Fall Fest.

Public Issues - Sherry TerMaat/Celeste Kappel

Our Mayor for a Day was held on Oct. 15th , with essay reading and pizza at Lake Katherine for winners, parents and Public Issue committee. We then went to City Hall for a mock City Council meeting. There were many ideas and suggestions for our wonderful city of Palos Heights. This year 61 essays were received from three area Jr. high schools. It was a challenge picking the 12 winners. Our Nov. meeting will honor the winners of the Mayor for a Day plus a presentation on the Honor Flight program. Please join us for an enjoyable evening. PLEASE remember to bring your Christmas Stockings and/or items to be placed in the stockings for our Women in the Military. They must be mailed in November. Please check your Oct. Newsletter for the items needed for the Christmas Stockings. Let us remember our women who serve in the military this Christmas and fill many stockings. The Public Issues Committee would like to thank those that bought candy for our Veterans at Manteno, which they will be passing out to their grandchildren and the children of Manteno at a Halloween party.

Flag Facts

The first official U.S. flag flown during battle was on Aug. 3, 1777 at Fort Schuyler. Soldiers cut up their shirts to make the white stripes, scarlet material to form the red was taken from red flannel petticoats of officers’ wives, while material for the blue union was taken from Capt. Abraham Swartwout’s blue cloth coat.

Christmas Wreaths – Mt Greenwood Special Rec As in previous years, we are once again selling Christmas wreaths for the Mt Greenwood Special Rec Association. They are an organization that supports the participants in the Mt Greenwood Therapeutic Recreation program with supplies and other expenses, like buses for field trips and Special Olympics, holiday parties, Special Olympic uniforms, etc. While this program is located at Mt Greenwood Park in Chicago, it serves adults and children with special needs in many of the south suburbs - including Palos Heights - as well as children and adults with special needs who live in Chicago. Pat Caldwell has three grandsons in the program, and they love it! The beautiful 24” wreaths are still only $20 and will be available for pick up at 13372 Oak Hills Parkway, (in Oak Hills), Palos Heights, on Saturday, Nov 23, from 3-6 pm. [Pat Caldwell’s home] If you need to make other arrangements for pickup, just let Pat know. Orders and payments [in advance] can be made at the Nov 5 meeting or by Friday, Nov 15 to Pat Caldwell. Checks should be made out to Mt Greenwood SRA. Cash needs to be in an envelope with your name on it If you have any questions or need more information, please call Pat Caldwell (773-979-2649) or (708 361 8240) or Denise Hyker (708 347 3512) Thank you for supporting this wonderful cause. GFWC IL – 125th Anniversary (Celeste Kappel)

Fran Oehman, 3rd District President and Celeste Kappel attended the 125 Anniversary of GFWC-IL in Peoria on Oct. 12th. There were many items of memorabilia, scrapbooks and pictures of all the GFWC-IL presidents since the beginning. Many of the Districts of Illinois were in attendance and after a delicious lunch, the Mayor of Peoria spoke. Shelli Fehr, President of GFWC-Il also spoke of some of the accomplishments of Women’s Clubs in Illinois. The building in which the festivities were held was the original building that the women had their first meeting in 125 years ago. A wonderful afternoon of renewing friendships, camaraderie and learning of the traditions and history of the GFWC-IL.

Personals Please keep Georgene Podewell in your thoughts and prayers as she continues to recover from recent surgery. Cards of encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

Update on Marj Hultquist: One of our sweetest members since 1957 (62 years) had a birthday recently and celebrated with family and friends at her new home: Porter Place, 17833 South Harlem, Tinley Park, IL 60477. Marj enjoyed blowing out the candles with her three great grandchildren. Cards can be sent to Marj care of her daughter Kay Elam, 21752 Saint Albert Ct., Mokena, Illinois 60448.

Congratulations to Rose and Mike Zubik who celebrated their 40th wedding Anniversary on September 15 which is nothing compared to June and Dick Campbell who celebrated their 64th Anniversary on October 22!

Cookies – Carolyn Nowakowski/Tracy Shumard.

As our annual housewalk approaches, it is time to decide which tasty cookies you will donate for the cookie sale. Help make the sale fabulous and the best sale in the PHWC Christmas Housewalk history! As a special incentive this year, each member who donates cookies will receive TWO free raffle tickets for the housewalk event. These free tickets can be used for any of the raffle baskets!

We request that each of you bake 4 dozen of your very best holiday cookies and bring them to the Palos Heights Recreation Center, 6601 West 127th Street, on Friday morning, December 13th, between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Note that the drop off time is earlier this year. We are hoping this will allow us to have the best assortment of cookies to pack all at once. On that Friday morning, our volunteers will sort all the cookies into tasty and beautiful combinations and pack them in 1 lb. and ½ lb. containers for sale at the housewalk breakfast. Remember, you can bake them now and freeze them if that is more convenient. If you are not able to deliver them on the morning of December 13th, please contact Carolyn Nowakowski or Tracey Shumard to arrange for a pickup. Just a few suggestions:

1. Choose varieties other than chocolate chip. 2. Consider compact, firm, colorful cookies.

Nothing gooey, large or delicate. 3. If you are not a baker, consider making a

monetary contribution to help with the purchase price of our containers.

It is our goal to have lots of our delicious homemade cookies on hand to support PHWC efforts and to help bring holiday joy! See all of you on Friday morning, December 13th .

5 Fun Facts About Christmas Cookies 1. Queen Elizabeth I invented gingerbread men. Thank Queen Elizabeth I for adorable little gingerbread people. While she didn’t actually bake the cookies herself (she was a queen, after all), she did request that her royal bakers create gingerbread cookies shaped like visiting dignitaries in order to honor them.

2. We leave cookies for Santa because of the Great Depression. It wasn’t standard practice to leave cookies and milk out for Santa Claus until the 1930s. Historians posit that it was something parents encouraged children to do in order to teach them how to share and be charitable during a time of economic depression. The tradition stuck and Santa’s pants have never fit the same.

3. Cookies were originally made to test oven temperature. According to culinary historians, cookies as we know them today were first made not to eat but to test the temperature of an oven. Cooks would take a small dollop of cake batter and bake it as a means of gauging whether the oven was ready or not.

4. Gingerbread men were illegal in some places during the Reformation. Martin Luther was not a fan of Christmas. In response to his anti-saint stance (Luther condemned the practice of praying to saints and instead taught his followers to pray directly to God), the city of Delft in the Netherlands forbade the sale of gingerbread men. Meanwhile, the magistrates of Amsterdam banned all molded cookies, as did the city of Arnhem

5. Santa Claus eats over 300 million cookies on Christmas Eve. Every Christmas Eve, Santa visits over 500 million homes where he encounters about a billion cookies. If you hypothesize that he takes about two bites of each cookie he is given, it means he eats a total of 336,150,386 cookies. [Note from Editor: Geesh, how many calories is that?]
