THE MIDDLETH AGES IN SPAINThe Muslims and Al-AndalusIn the 7th century a new religion called ISLAM appeared. Its followers were called MUSLIMS

Their sacred city is La Meca

Their holy book is The Koran

Muslims pray 5 times a day, always facing La Meca

Mahoma is their prophet. He talks in the name of Allah

(their God)

The Muslims conquer the Peninsula

The Muslims wanted to expand their religion.

In the 711 they arrived in the South of the peninsula and

conquered most of it.

The conquered territory was called Al-Andalus. Cordoba was the capital.

The 10th century was its best moment because it became the biggest city in Europe.

The Christians, however, form reigns in the North of Spain

Iberic Peninsula in 800

These Christian reigns will take over

the Muslims of Al-Andalus

little by little

(it will take them 8 centuries)

1492, the Catholic Monarchs conquer Granada

…and in the 15th century, after many quiet, peaceful periods followed by wars, the reign of Granada was the

last area to be conquered by the Christians

The Christians continued moving forward…

The houses of the nobles were the castles

Near them, peasants used to

live in villages formed by small

houses.

Columbus had proposed Queen Isabella a shorter route to get to Asia sailing Westwards

After lots of negotiations, the queen accepted

They signed the Capitulaciones of Santa Fe…

The first voyage of Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus sets off from the port of Palos (Huelva) on August 3rd, 1492

Columbus sailed along with two Andalucian captains who were brothers:

Alonso and Vicente Yañez Pinzón

He sets off with three ships.

• Two caravels: LA PINTA and LA NIÑA, ruled by the Pinzón Brothers.• One nao (a bit bigger and heavier): LA SANTA MARÍA, ruled by Columbus.

Before crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the ships stopped in

La Gomera (Canary Islands)

There the ships were repaired and water and fresh products were

storaged to continue facing the unknown

Carlos I (1517-1556) becomes the most powerful king in Europe (Carlos V in Germany) and almost in America.

This is a time of great prosperity.

however, it was an amazing time for ART and ARTISTS.

Felipe V became king of Spain when the War of Succession ended.

Because of the war, Spain lost all its territories in Europe, including Gibraltar.

Later on a quiet and peaceful time followed. Population recovered and

economy improved.

Nobles used to live in luxurious palaces located in the very center of the city

Farmers used to live in bigger houses in the countryside
