Take charge of your Rental Business with a legal team backing you upLandlords are faced with the options of (1) hiring a Property Management Com-pany, and paying up front for Tenant services and a monthly maintenance fee, or (2) going it alone, pocketing the savings, but are forced to handle everything them-selves. Many Landlords don’t know what to do.
Lucia Di Cicco at Hinman & Di Cicco, PLC, can provide a third option by providing customized legal documents for your rentals to help you manage your properties yourself. Whether you have 1 property or 100, creating a firm legal footing for your Landlord/Tenant relationship is the most important part to collecting rent, enforcing rules, and if necessary, evict-
ing a tenant and collecting for back rent and damages.
Make your solo or small portfolio rental business more efficient!Lucia Di Cicco, an IACS Board member and member of the Italian-American Chamber of Commerce, has seen what poor preparation of Rental Ap-plications, Leases, Checklists, and Land-lord Letters can do to a Landlord without le-gal footing. Work with Hinman & Di Cicco, PLC to cre-ate the right relationship with your Tenant from
the start to ensure a suc-cessful, profitable, and worry free rental business.
Are you a property manage-ment company with a huge portfolio? We can handle streamlined evictions and money judgments for col-lection of past due rent and damages. Our clients in-
clude one of the fast-est growing property management com-panies in Southeast-ern Michigan, and can do the same for you!

Groundbreaking IACS Bocce CourtsThe President, Ronald DiBartolomeo, of the Ital-ian American Cultural Society, accompanied by the Officers and Board of Directors, celebrated a groundbreaking ceremony for new bocce courts at the Italian American Cultural Center on April 24. Also in attendance were many supportive IACS members, Italian organizations, and the local community.
The President pointed out that an Italian cultural cen-
ter is not an Italian cultural center unless there are bocce courts on the premises and that today would not have come to realization had it not been for so many board mem-bers setting goals about what could be and what should be at the Italian American Cul-tural Center.
The Board of Directors promised some day to have bocce courts at the Italian American Cultural Center, and they fulfilled that prom-ised.

Well you missed it again – the Bocce Courts Ground Breaking and Mother’s Day Brunch. Two great events for the IACS and I wonder if YOU were there? ? ? ?
Attending the Bocce Court Ground Breaking was Bob Cannon - Supervisor for Clinton Township; Richard Notte – Mayor of Sterling Heights; Sam LaGrasso – President of United Lawnscape; Wayne Oehmke – President of the Sterling Hts. Regional Chamber of Commerce and many other
dignitaries as well as many members of the IACS and members of the Press. “This is a dream finally coming to reality” was remarked by Ron DiBartolomeo – President of the IACS. Once the Ground Breaking ceremony was completed, everyone moved inside for Italian cookies and refreshments.
Mother’s Day was another fantastic event with over 750 attendees and everyone was more than pleased with the food and the service. The next big event will be Father’s Day on June 17th. If you missed the others, you won’t want to miss this one. It’s called “Dine with Dad” and it is mainly for the breakfast crowd.
Very soon we will be throwing out the first Bocce Balls. Yes, the courts will be complete and soon the sound of the Bocce Players will be added to the sounds of the Banquet Center and the teams will be going strong on the IACS courts.
Also started, the IACS – Nonna’s Nites “Sounds
of Summer” with Special entertainment scheduled for each week on the summer. Look elsewhere in the Italian American for a schedule of shows. This is the group that you enjoyed las year and will appreciate even more this year including Barry Alan & Friends, Jimmy Rand and his Magical Accordion, Nick Apollo and his one man show, and Dom & Company – the great trio specializing in 40’s, 50’s & 60’s music.Don’t forget to buy your sheets from the IACS or your memorial brick or your memorial bench for the new Bocce Courts!
There is a lot going on – don’t miss any of it – it is YOUR center.

The first thing in the morning, a chef wakes up feeling the pressure of a day’s work ahead of him, wonder who’s going to call in sick; will we receive our food deliveries in time for lunch; what specials should I run for lunch and dinner; how many lunches we serve that day; do I have enough staff.
Lunch starts off slow, gradually building to a fast pace. The adrenelin kicks in, and you become a man on a mission just to get through lunch. Wow, you’re finished with lunch. It is about 2:00 P.M. and you need a breather and a little food. Now you wonder who will call in sick for the dinner service; how
many dinners will you serve; do I have enough cooks, etcetera. The pressure builds. The owner calls you into the office, says there were complaints, the steaks were tough. Right away you are thinking it is your fault. After all, everything out the kitchen is the chef’s responsibility.
Immediately you call you meat supplier, tell him how disappointed you are in the quality of steak he sent you.Meanwhile, you hope the owner is not upset with you. The mood becomes somber. The rest of the day before dinner is taking inventory and calling your purveyors placing orders.
Now it is time to get ready for dinner. Reservations are full, expecting a very busy night. You’re wondering if you have enough cooks for the night, knowing your labor cost is high for the month.
I have decided to run two stations myself expediting the order, working from the broiler station.
My staff realizes I am working two stations, and the panic mode begins to set in. Ok guys. Buckle down and let’s work hard to get this night over with. Dinner
starts out slow, gradually getting busier. The kitchen is hot, you’re tired, and you need this dinner rush to end. You’re thirsty, dehydrated and tired. I ask a busy server for something to drink. The reply is I am too busy.
As the dinner rush continues, the dinner tickets are running behind, customer is asking where is their food. The owner appears in the kitchen, the culinary staff starts to buckle down, works hard to get the orders out.
Finally the dinner rush is over, things settle down. The chef checks how much product is sold. He realizes he needs more produce, seafood and meats – leaves orders on the answering machines, checks the kitchen, makes sure everything is okay.
Time to leave, feet and legs are hurting, a couple burns from the night are sore, time to go home get some sleep and start all over the next morning.
The average hours of a chef varies, but most work 12 to 15 hours per day. Yes, would us chefs love a job on the Food network, I think you know what the answer will be.

The 2012 Columbus Day Queen Pageant was held at the Palazzo Grande on May 18, 2012. This year’s pageant featured the competition for Senior Queen, Junior Queen, Littler Miss, and the presentation of Little Queen Isabella, Sofia Mazzola. Pageant chairperson Dawn Bartolomeo welcomed everyone to the event and introduced this year’s judges, Shirley Sieweke, Michelle Collins, and Diane McDonald. The emcee was media personality and actor Marty Buffalini, whose parents came from Pacentro, Italy.
Pam White addressed the audience, advising that this would be the first of five events celebrating Columbus Day. The next event is a bus trip to the state capitol in Lansing on October 4, followed by the Columbus Day Parade on October 6. On October 7 a mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Church, and the banquet will take place at the Palazzo Grande that evening.
This year’s pageant consisted of private interviews that were conducted by the judges beforehand, in addition to the evening’s events. The
contestants appeared in business wear and gave a speech about their sponsors, which included many Italian clubs and businesses. Next they appeared in casual wear, and answered an impromptu question which they selected at random. The talent competition was impressive and varied, including singing (in English and in Italian), dancing, piano, pizzelle making, cassata cake
decorating , poetry reading In English and Italian), and an artwork display. Finally, the contestants appeared in evening gowns and were asked to tell who has had the greatest influence on their lives and why.
The judges no doubt had a very difficult time choosing
between such lovely and talented candidates. The contestants were brought back to the stage and the winners were announced as follows:
Little Miss Queen Isabella: Sofia Mazzola (Miss Holy Family)
Little Miss Columbus Day:
Congratulations ..... 2012 Columbus Day Queen PageantQueen Marina Maniaci (Miss Il Fornaio), 1st runner-up Rosemary Mazzola (Miss Vince & Joe’s), 2nd runner-up Gina Mazzola (Miss Italian American Chamber of Commerce)
Junior Miss Columbus Day: Queen Julia Smith (Miss
Venetian), 1st runner-up Ylenia Bonni (Miss Club Madonna del Ponte), 2nd runner-up Hayley Woloszyk (Miss Dena Marie)
Senior Miss Columbus Day: Queen Maria Consiglio (Miss Terrasini), 1st runner-up Allison Warchol (Miss La
Dolce Vita), 2nd runner-up Nina Cicchelli (Miss Coro Italiano)
It was an exciting evening for all the contestants, and their families and friends and an entertaining one for those lucky enough to be in attendance.

To kick off the opening of Ruggero Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci in grand style, the Italian Heritage Society, Italian American Cultural Society, and the greater Detroit tri-county Italian organizations, in cooperation with the Italian consul, collaborated with the Michigan Opera Theatre to offer a Lunch, Lecture, and Listen on May 6, 2012. Approximately 40 people attended the catered brunch at the Cadillac Café in the beautiful Detroit Opera House in the company of MOT general director Dr. David DiChiera.
After lunch, Dr. DiChiera welcomed the group, explaining that his parents were from Calabria and that he “loves being in touch with his Italian roots”. Dr. DiChiera gave a lively and interactive lecture about I Pagliacci . Premiering at La Scala in May of 1892 to thirty curtain calls, it heralded a new movement in Italian opera known as verismo (reality or truth). Where operas had
previously been written about the aristocracy, the subjects of verismo were ordinary people and their human passions.
The group was regaled by an unexpected visit from Maestro Steven Mercurio, conductor of the production. He explained that in verismo there was a greater emphasis on the symphonic music in addition to the lyrics, which helped set the stage for the story that would unfold. He described it as an opera where the music and the drama co-exist and referred to it as a “ballet between the conductor and the stage.”
Bernard Uzan, director of the production, also spoke to the delighted audience. He further explained that I Pagliacci combined the elements of verismo and Commedia dell’arte, featuring typical characters such as Pierrot (Pagliaccio), Arlecchino, and Colombina. Mr. Uzan told the group that
his staging of I Pagliacci features two mimes, representing comedy and tragedy, which appear at the beginning and end of the production. He also added a ten minute long pantomime dream sequence at the beginning of the second act, featuring music from another Leoncavallo opera, Zaza . Mr. Uzan explained that with this addition he hoped to maintain the poetry of the opera while revealing the history of the relationship between characters Canio and Nedda.
Armed with these insights, the attendees adjourned to the theatre to watch the sitzprobe. This is a “seated rehearsal”, the first time that the orchestra and singers actually rehearse together. The entire cast of Gordon Hawkins (Tonio), Antonello Palombi (Canio), Jill Gardner (Nedda), Philippe Pierce (Beppe), and Luis Ledesma (Silvio) were seated on the stage along with the chorus. It was a great opportunity
I Pagliacci Lunch, Lecture & Listen to witness the dynamics between conductor, orchestra, and singers.
Opening Night
Many of the attendees of the May 6 Lunch, Lecture, & Listen enjoyed the opening night performance of I Pagliacci on May 12, 2012. Afterward they had the pleasure of mingling with the cast in the Cadillac Café.
Proud grandparents Bill and Angie Morelli were also in the opening night audience to watch their talented young grandson Antonio Cipriano perform. Antonio is a member of the Michigan Opera Theatre Children’s Chorus. Just twelve years old, Antonio also appeared in the MOT’s recent production of H.M.S. Pinafore. We can look forward to seeing more of Antonio in the future!

HELP WANTEDSOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY ONLYATTORNEYS ALFONSI & BIESKE
Many people are wrongly rejected when they apply for So-cial Security Disability benefits. Money was taken out of their paychecks for Social Security taxes to ensure that they would receive disability benefits if they could no longer work full-time. Sadly, the government denies approximately 60% of those who apply for disability benefits.
Attorneys Jennifer Alfonsi and J.B. Bieske have 42 years combined experience representing only Social Security dis-ability clients. And they personally meet with all clients and appear themself at all court hearings. Attorneys Alfonsi and Bieske have vast experience before local Michigan judges.
Attorneys Alfonsi and Bieske can often make a winning dif-ference at the application stage. And, if an appeal is neces-sary they have won several hundred cases before a court date is even set.
Attorneys Alfonsi and Bieske offer free phone or office con-sultation. If they represent you, there will be no fee charged until after the case is won. The fee is a percentage of retro-active benefits.
Alfonsi and Bieske represent clients from all over the state of Michigan. They have appeared numerous times before virtually all of the judges in the state. Their main office is in Sterling Heights at 38850 Van Dyke. Call them at 1-800-331-3530 for a free consultation if you have been denied, or if you are thinking of possibly applying for Social Security benefits.

San Francesco Church Congratulates Father Dino Vanin, PIME 40th Ordination Sunday, June 10 – 9:30 A.M. Mass
San Francesco Church, Clinton Township, Michi-gan will host a 40th Anniversary cel-ebration in honor of Father Dino Vanin, PIME Missionary Priest and Author , on June 10, 2012, at 9:30 a.m. Mass, followed by a pro-cession with the Blessed Sacrament and a reception im-mediately following in the church hall. San Francesco Church would like to take this opportunity to thank Father Dino Vanin for his service to the Parish. Father offers his support by assisting with the weekend masses, offering spiritual di-rection to the parishioners, preparing young couples for marriage, providing the sacraments, etc. Everyone is cordially invited to attend and convey your good wish-es to Father Dino.
Born in Treviso, Italy, Father entered the PIME Seminary
when he was 11 years old and was ordained June 10,
1972. PIME (Pont i f ical Institute of Foreign Mis-sions) is a community of Priests and Brothers who commit themselves to lifelong missionary service, es-pecially to
non-Christians.
After ordination, Father Dino began teaching Latin and Industrial Arts at PIME Seminary in Newark, Ohio. He served as Principal from 1974 to 1982, and Rector from 1983 until 1986, when he left America to serve the Missions of Thailand.
In Thailand, he worked in the Diocese of Chiang Mai at Lampang in the northern re-gion. He worked especially among the mountain tribal
people who live on the bor-der with Myanmar and Laos.
Father Dino Vanin co-au-thored a book with Father Corrado Ciceri on Thailand called “Gold in the Moun-tains”. “Gold in the Moun-tains” gives the reader a view of the Mountain Tribes of Thailand, who present a great variety of cultures, lan-guages, and religions.
Father serves as Treasurer of the North American Region of PIME, located on Quincy Street in Detroit, Michigan. He, also, is a skilled wood-worker, known for his com-plex woodworking projects and wonderfully crafted fur-niture.
Donations of baked goods are needed and welcomed. They can be dropped off in the church hall prior to 9:30 a.m. Mass. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending. Help us make a special memory for Father Dino Vanin.
