rc’s notes

I get called a lot of things. Around St James, I'm usually "Pastor Ryan." Kids have called me "PR." And there are two people who call me "Reverend Christenson."

It's that last title--Reverend--that makes me pause. While it can be considered a title similar to "President" or "The Honorable", the definition of reverend is "worthy to be revered; entitled to reverence." Uncomfortable with demanding my worth, I've stayed away from using the term to describe myself. Instead, I have signed baptismal certificates, marriage licenses, and other correspondence as "Pastor Ryan."

To me, the Christian life is less about title and worth and more about calling and relationship. "Calling" points us to how God's Spirit gifts and leads us to serve one another--some have the gifts of teaching, some serving, some healing, each as God gifts them. And "relationship" refers to Jesus' greatest commandments: to love God and love each other. Everything else is built on these.

Thank you for these seven-and-a-half years being called your pastor. Thank you for the times when we've celebrated together, when we've tried and failed, and when we've caught on to what God was wanting to do in our life together. Thank you.

As it is in the United Methodist Church, Bishop Julius Calvin Trimble and his cabinet of leaders have sought to match up the needs of St James with the unique gifts and calling of a pastor, and I am glad to pass leadership on to Rev. Dr. Eric Sayonkon. He will be arriving to Sioux City the last week of June with his wife, Eboni, and his children, Noah, Luke, and Abigail. Additionally, even through Kristi and I will still be living in Sioux City, we will be intentional about leaving space for Pastor Eric to get connected, live out his calling, and build relationships at St James. Pastors Matt and Bernie did the same for me when I arrived.

Similar to Pastor Bernie who served in a supervisory role for Northwest Iowa, I will be serving as Field Outreach Minister (resource person) for our district. So that I won't play favorites with St James, Melissa Drake will be your Field Outreach Minister for the next two years--walking with you and resourcing you as a conference staff person. You may contact her at the Southwest District Office at (712) 243-8573 or by email at [email protected].

Again, thank you for the privilege of being a part of so many holy moments in your life and in our life together. Peace, rc

this spring, funded by a UMC Peace & Justice grant. If you’d like more information on ways you can help, contact Aggie Clausen (276-8174) or Jenny Jorgensen (276-5422).

During the years of the 80’s and 90’s St. James supported Norma Kehrberg of Le Mars as she served as a missionary in Nepal. Following the recent horrible earthquake in Nepal I spoke with Norma on the phone. She told me that her close friends still living there had survived, but nothing has been heard from the area in the mountains where she taught in her first school early in her mission. They were fearing it would not be good news. Norma encourages us all to keep the people of Nepal in our prayers. If anyone would like to contribute to the recovery work, write “Nepal” on your check or envelope and place it in the offering plate Sunday. She sends her fondest greetings to all of you.

Welcome St. James New Pastor

St James Staff Parish Relations Committee is very pleased to announce that Bishop Julius Calvin Trimble and his cabinet have appointed Pastor Eric Sayonkon to become the pastor of St James United Methodist Church beginning near the first of July of this year. Pastor Eric is currently the pastor of the Dallas Center United Methodist Church in Dallas Center, Iowa. He is married to Eboni and they have three young children, Noah, Luke and Abigail. In the coming days we will want to enjoy the time we will have with Pastor Ryan, Kristi and Olivia and give them a good send off. We can begin now to pray for Pastor Eric and his family as they prepare to come to be part of our church family. In addition to praying for our congregation and our leaders, we should also remember the Dallas Center congregation as we all prepare for this transition. The Scriptures promise us that God goes with us through the changing seasons of our lives. May we claim that promise in the days ahead as we anticipate God's future. Thank you.

We are thankful for the encouragement and prayers from other United Methodists,

knowing that God is working through St James and its leaders.
